How do you guys stop buying guns?

Get old.

Well, I can't say that works all the time. I haven't "stopped" but I've cut way back. At one time I had a safe full of handguns in particular. I honestly didn't know how many I had. Then one day I realized that. "I don't know how many guns I have." I had guns I'd never fired, and had never thought about firing.

So I sold off most of them. I kept a few that I really like and use. Now when I see something I want, I either trade or sell one I've got and get the next one. I've actually reduced the number I kept down a few more. But they're ones I use. At least once in a while.

It helps that now when I look into a display I can say "I've one of those." Also I'm not interesed in anything "new" so I don't care what kind of whiz bang plastic semi-auto just came out.

Oh, easy... Buy ammo and powder and primers and bullets and scopes and mounts and cases and safes and guide rods and cleaning rods and patches and solvents and lubes and sights and lasers and batteries and grips and earplugs and gloves and holsters and........................................................

You want to stop what????????????
Guns you say.
Why?
As long as you can rob Peter to pay Paul why stop?
And when Peter runs out of money then there are all those high end electronics you bought the kids that can be pawn.

That is consistant with my experience as well. I still don't really know how many guns I own unless I look at my "list". At one time, I would have thought that important. But honestly, I don't care if know "how many" guns I own; it isn't a race. Then you take home the latest purchase and realize you have three of them already versus the one you thought you had. And that is because you looked at the "list". I exaggerate a bit, but it is essentially true.

The not looking or particularly caring about some new product also is significant relative to the desire to acquire something new. You also begin to realize that is just more stuff. That said, I STILL want a new S&W M63 (3") 22 and a few others and have absolutely no need for them.

Added relative to the orginal poster...

Seriously. I just can't help myself. I have way more than my pay grade allows! Every time I think I am all set, something else comes along! Aaaaaaaagh!

If you really want to tone it down, I suggest that you start by putting "X dollars" into an envelope every month and then forbidding yourself from buying anything gun related unless you have the CASH in the envelope. Those envelopes also tend to get used for other stuff which helps to keep things in perspective. And then there is layaway and credit cards.... just don't unless you just really need it for a specific purpose... say picking up a varmint rifle because you just discovered a significant interest.

Well, three things:

  • Engagement ring payment
  • House payment
  • Truck payment ("I'll marry you, deal with deployments, the fact that you're an overgrown frat boy, and the fact that you work for the Boy Scouts, but you are buying a truck that I can drive and get in and out of without flashing the world if I'm in a skirt")

I bought a safe sized for X guns when I bought my first.
Kind of like a library: the books may change, but I only have so much shelf space.

Find a different hobby. I haven't purchased a gun in about 3 months, which is a record for me. I started buying mechanical watches to work on. It doesn't save a dime. In fact, I think it may be an even more expensive hobby. Crap! :o

If you know how many guns you have, you probably don't have enough.

I think I'm somewhere in the 30-40 range -- its getting a bit difficult to find a place in my gun safe for them all. I've had to start storing the handgun cases outside the safe and the handguns themselves in the safe.

My problem is that when I finally croak, my wife isn't interested in them and will probably sell them for what I *said* I paid for them. I also don't consider my daughter responsible enough to inherit anything of value, so I'm not inclined to give them to her. I guess my only choice is not to croak... I'll get back to ya'll on how that works out for me... :)
