How do you guys do it?

Its up to state law and your gut feeling. I sold to a person who had a CCW permit and a drivers license that matched photo and address. Gun was used in a robbery in NJ. Local sheriff showed up at my door wanting to know the disposition of the gun. Thankfully I had a bill of sale with all the buyers info on it. That in itself put me in the clear.

In free states, you converse with the guy to get a feel for whether or not he is a psycho first. Then you meet in a public place (I like Kroger parking lots), show him the piece, collect cash, and drive home.

There is no legal obligation to ensure any qualifications of the buyer.

I would have a signed, dated bill of sale to show it was no longer mine at time of said incident.

And so you are going to do what now?

Present the court with proffered evidence that you did in fact sell the gun to a prohibited possessor. Great, now all you have to do is prove that the guy didn't present any indication that he was a prohibited possessor, (prison tats aside)
