How do you deal with neighbors barking Dogs?

BB Gun, I like it! I thought of CB Shorts, but too much power; but I like the idea of a BB Gun. Lots of good advice here, thanks all. :) I tried the firecracker idea while celebrating the Fourth of July (The owners were out of town). :) :)

Gun control started the Revolutionary War!..."itcta alea est"

I learned a long time ago that it does no good to complain to dog owners about their dogs, they just don't get it. And it is a shame that dogs must pay for their owners mistakes but they're is no other choice. I won't go into my terrible dog owner neighbor stories but eventually got one pack of yapping dobermans to be quiet with a slingshot. A BB gun is more accurate and easier to control. A pump can be pretty quiet, you don't need to hurt the dog bad, you are just providing training that the owners don't give. It's too bad, most barking dogs are barking because they are neglected. Every now and then I can overlook, but I've known so many that bark non-stop. Dogs require a lot of attention, at least till they get real old and are content to sleep in the house all the time. People don't realise a dog is a sociable animal and don't give them the attention they need.

As a followup to my two-word post...

The BB gun is great because most of them won't pierce the skin, and many are multi-pumps so you can "set" the power level. I do NOT recommend causing the dog any real damage. Like gitarmac said, you're just training the dog, albeit at long range.

The BB gun is great for a lot of things:
- groundhogs
- bright lights that shine in your windows while you're trying to sleep (bulbs are expensive... eventually)

I've got two. The rifle is perfect for long range, but a pistol is a necessity if you need to get close.

Here's a situation from the other side of the street. I have two dogs, they have always been good about barking and will not unless someone startles them or comes right up to the house. This to me sounds like what dogs do. I just moved into this house two months ago and already I have two threats leved against me. Not serious threats mind you but threats none the less and the person seems to be escilating.

When we first moved in the barking problem never even occured to me as it seems like whenever they barked was when people would come up directly to my fence and annoy them or if there were people in my yard in the front. I see no reason why this would be the dogs fault. If you're looking in through my fence then yes I want you to know that there's dogs in here. If you're on my yard then yes I want you to know that there is dogs here as well.

So from this I got my first anonimous letter. This is usually the worst conclusion. Ok now I know there's a problem but I don't know any other information about it. So I went out the next day and purchased, on petco's advice, one of the beeping things that stop them from barking. That thing annoyed the living hell out of me. I thought that people would complain in a second because it was so loud. And I figured if they complain I'll take it back and I'll get something else to try instead. Surprisingly no one complained for over a week.

Then one day coming back from work, I came back to have a police car parked in front of my house. This was a very interesting situation. These leos refused to tell me what the charge was, but remembered to tell me that if they had to come out again that they would arrest me. This makes me wonder as I work at the local police deptment, not as a leo but as a student officer and understand what people can and can't be arrested for. These officers also attempted to leave the scene without giving me their badge numbers, one refused straight out. After they left I had to call a sergent to get the actual charge. It also seems that there was several calls trying to get officers out to my house but none of the reasons were good enough until one call came in saving that they believed that it either was a fire alarm or a burgular alarm, and the leos were out on a check on the welfare call. The best part here is this group of neightbors had gathered around my house within 5 feet of my fence. You tell me if you were a dog that you wouldn't be the least bit concerned of what would going on? After this situation I had to deal with a group of rather hostile people. Two wfa and one bma and one wma. I refused to talk to any of them because at the time they were calm enough. Surprisingly to me the two women were the most irrate. The bma was the first that I deemed calm enough to talk to. This was an important step because at this point I didn't know if everyone out here was complaining about the barking again or the beeping. It turns out from talking to the bma that everyone was complaining about the beeping. This was more than fine for me, I hated this beeping thing and I wanted to run it over myself. As I started this conversation the two wfa walked off with "I'm going to make it my life's goal to make your life a living hell," not much of a threat but it appears that she might be trying her darnest. They also shot back "don't bother apoligizing," which I replied to " I seriously intend to but I will not talk to you if you are irrate." After this night I have had someone consistantly setting my car alarm off, yes I have seen them, to the point of having me to have to turn the alarm off. Needless to say I was getting a little annoyed here and was oiling up the paintball gun. Never brought myself to use it, if I had turned the alarm off and they start damaging my car then it would different.

After this incident I went to petco the next day to purchase a shock collar. I never thought these were humane but at the time this was the only other option aviable to me. So I purchased this the next day and it seemed to work well. In the instructions it says that you should start the treatment and after a while you should cover the electric buds to make the dog think the collar was still live and ween it off the collar. It turns out it seems like my dog is fairly smart and I recieved another note that night. This one was again anoymimous. And again wasn't in the nicest tone. For all dog owners if you plan on moving into a place take a survey of the neightbors. When I did one I found that this neighborhood is by far one of most hostile towards pets I have ever heard. There was one house that had a dog that was forced out because the neighbors would report every bark the dog made and contacted the landlord directly without ever telling the tenant about the problem. The interesting thing was after checking with my immediate neighbors none one there said they noticed the dogs barking.

Somewhat sad, I was in a better position than the neighbor that was forced to vacate before she even knew she had a problem. But not much better. Here I have three notes not one of them tell me any information other than the dogs were barking.

Maybe some of you are joking but seriously if I found anyone in my backyard or near the backyard trying to do anything to my dogs, yes they would be barking, and yes you wouldn't even realized that you would be sitting directly in my sights. Not a threat but a fact. A bb gun at this time might not be the best idea either. Honestly if the notes contained some more information or if the neighbors had contacted me directly with information it wouldn't have deteriorated to a situation like this.

The dogs don't bark only when somebody walks by, they bark all the time. The most annoying one is this little POS pomeranian (I hate little dogs) that whines at all hours day and nite.

Some good ideas here. My new neighbor has two dogs which she was taking outside to do their duty at 4am. Our houses are about twenty feet apart and my bedroom is right above her back porch. And the yippy little things would bark every time. After several nights of this, I approached her and asked if it was necessary to have them out at 4am. It was part of their obedience training, she said. I asked if she could take them to her front door. Too much trouble, she said, then added that there was nothing she could do about it. Fortunately, the threat of calling the police every time they barked seemed to have an effect. Now she takes them out at 6:30 am, which is about the same time another neighbor warms up his bike, and the same time a different neighbor starts pounding away on his latest project. And I don't have to get out of bed until 7:30 :(

How about a .22 short in a Ruger Mark II, to the back of the dog's head?

If "the people" in the 1st, 4th, 9th & 10th amendments, means "the people", why do some folks think "the people" in the 2nd amendment means "the state"? :confused:

Stated that the dogs had no water or shelter.I hate these people with passon but call your local chapter of PETA or any group of that ilk.I think you will surprised at how much power they have in most areas.If it doesn't work you are out nothing.

Dog barking because someone (not some animal) is WITHIN the owners property is doing it's job. Dog barking for the hell of it and disturbing the neighbors is a liability and demonstrates a lack of civility on the part of the owner.

Used to have Korean market to sell em to.

I had an otherwise nice neighbor who had a whole pack of mexican ratdogs... He'd walk 'em at about 7:00 ayem... Not so bad during the week, but on weekends...

Monkey, you need to fire up a wood planer about 5:30 every morning. :D

CR SAM, yeah the good old days :)

Ultima these neighbors have been talked to a number of times with and without LEO'S present. They have even told HK to take the dog to his house and put it in his garage. Can you belive this? They dont care a lick about their dogs, or they were hoping he would take it home then call the cops for "dognapping".

You have a neighbor problem ULTIMA not a dog problem. Some of your neighbors need to have the smack down put on them. I have two little dogs and my buddy is also a dog owner, I think very few people on this board dislike dogs, (well maybe kevin ;)) My second to last dog was killed by my neighbor with powdered glass, not a very humane way to end a dogs life. The dog lived in back yard and the kids would through stones at it on way to and from school so dog barked, but it didnt bark for no reason, just as your dogs dont, it didnt matter for this old man, he had a hard life taking care of his son who was in his 60's and wheel chair bound with I think MS. So the old man was very bitter. I have been on both sides of the fence my self so am understanding about dog barking "thats what they do" but there comes a point where it is excessive. BTW this dobelab mix was the smartest dog we have ever had too bad it had to die the way it did. Neighbor is now gone and some commie pepsi generations kids have moved in. Now they let off fireworks year round, have to watch out for their bottle rockets landing on our roof. Hard to find decent neighbors.

Hey FUD the house on my left is still unoccupied? Wow imagine having FUD as your neighbor, youd have to check you mail with a 12 ga, a roving band of canibal rioters might appear. :)

Unfortunately, owners of dogs like these are essentially children--never grew up and can't understand why anyone would object to anything their dog might do. They have no consideration for others and are not about to develop any at this late date.

Very recently there was an incident in Montana over exactly this issue. A 59 yr old man with 'health problems' objected to barking dogs--at which point the 32 year old owner assaulted him. The older man died as a result.

You never know exactly what kind of insane behavior you are going to get out of these nut cases...they are not too well organized to start with. Sort of like 'road rage' drivers except they are your neighbor if you are unlucky.

Been there, almost got in a gunfight over it...People are highly volatile about their dogs. My experience is the following:

1. Do NOT try to talk to them first. If they don't care in the FIRST place, they won't in the 2nd! It only tips them off as to who is the upset party...
2. Fire ice cubes from a sling-shot when owner is not around...evidence will melt,a nd you are in the clear.
3. Use ultra-sonic stuff, such as a dog-whistle, to correct behavior...
4. If necessary, get an Alpha male dog yourself...the other dog will act deferential to it, and should stop it's barking
5. visit handguncontrolinc.org

There`s a thread posted on another forum where a guy tossed his wife`s meatloaf over the fence. He didn`t find the dog offensive, just the meatloaf. The dog died the next day. Want the recipe? :D

#4 is already in the works but not for the reason of quieting the neighbors dogs. I’m going to buy an akita, already found two breeders. They grow to be about 120 pounds and are very aggressive to other animals :) Gee, I have no idea how your pomeranian got in my yard, looks like my dog won’t need any Eukanuba tonight!! :)

First, find out what local laws/ordinances, if any, apply in your location. If you are protected by the law, call the police and have them visit the offending dog owners and issue a strong warning, if possible while the dog/dogs are barking. If the visit by the officer does not correct the problem, have a warrant served and haul them into court.

In my case, the official visit and warning did the trick . . . for now.

I was confronted with the same identical situation; big, loud dog next door with a fetish for his own voice in the wee hours.

Here's what I did to take care of the problem:

1) Wrote the owner a letter admonishing him of the problem and politely urging him to solve it(kept a copy for records);

2) Upon not receiving an answer in 7-10 days, I called animal control;

3) Animal control sent him a "barking notice", alerting him of the possible fines if problem persisted;

4) Upon seeing that the dog just wouldn't stop, I was asked by Animal Control to keep a log of the barking hours (yes, it was a pain, but, as you will see, well worth it);

5) After compiling a week's worth of barking-log and sending it (signed and witnessed) to Animal Control, the guy was slapped with a $700 fine (Right before Christmas :D);

6) The dog suddenly stopped barking and I was able to resume my normal life.

That was when I lived in Texas. Kalifornia..... might actually have other regulations.... I hear you guys are a little "different" out there..... ;)
