How CCW-friendly is your state?

I'm in NY, and got my CCW a few months ago, $100, and about a 6 month wait. Our State laws seem to be VERY COunty specific. go figure.

How CCW friendly is you state?

VERY!
Virginia law was rewritten by the anti's to say that you can not have a gun in an locked glove compartment in your car without a CCW.
If the legislature, this year, funds an anual criminal check of each CCW holder, it will be a LIFE TIME CCW.

The more I hear about other state's CCW laws, the more I like Missouri's. Of course, Vermont is the exception where anybody can carry without a permit which is how it SHOULD be nationwide!

Missouri allows concealed carry to everyone in a vehicle even without a permit. Many have said that our roads will be more dangerous with enraged drivers shooting out their windows at each other and confrontations ending in bloodshed... didn't happen.

Missouri now has reciprocity with 30 other states with CCW laws in effect. That's more than any other state including Florida.

Businesses in Mo that choose to post prohibiting concealed carry on their premesis can only ask you to leave if they discover you carrying and disregarding their signage. If you choose not to leave, however, they can call the law on you and you can be charged with trespass which is a misdemeanor charge and small fine. I have heard of nobody that refused to leave an establishment after being asked to leave to push the issue. In fact, there is a boycott list available online that lists businesses that choose to prohibit carry in their business and many respect that list. It's goes to reason that these businesses do not want law abiding honest people to patronize their store and would rather invite the criminal to their declared unarmed victim zone.

Missouri alse reconizes every other state's CCW permit so if you hold one, you are good in MO.

Texas CHL...

Not too bad in Texas. CHL class of about 10 hours including some easy range qualifying. Cost varies from about $100.00 to about $125.00 for training class. I think it's about $140.00 state lisence fee unless you are a geezer like me (over 65) and then it's only $70.00. Good for four years depending on your birthday and the date you take your course. Renewal is on your 4th birthday from acceptance. The lisence is for concealed carry only, no open carry.
The processing time it takes varies considerably. My wife got hers in about 57 days and I got mine in 98 days. We sent our application in on the same day, go figure. It's worth the effort to have the option to carry or not. I have a loaded gun within easy reach nearly 24/7.
As others have recommended, go to www.texaschlforum.com for all the info you need. There are a lot of knowledgeable, good people lurking there.:)

Almost useless

AirForceShooter, as I consider all the liabilities, restrictions, antis' "victories", I'm getting the feeling that it is de facto "almost ... worthless" for law-abiding, constitution-respecting people to defend themselves against criminals, regardless of how vicious the latter might be. Might there be "light at the end of the tunnel"?

The light is closer. consider how many stated have passed CCW and Stand your ground laws in the past few years.
Recprocity is expanding all the time.
The advances are all happening at the State and Local level.
The Feds are completely out of touch.
Is it perfect?? Hell no.
Is it better than it was 10 years ago, Ohh my YES!!!
Don't give up hope.
Nothing scares one of your representives (at any level) getting a letter. It sends a message that you're watching.

Cali isn't very friendly. It's up to the County Sheriff's office to issue. San Diego is a difficult county to get a CCW in, but some other neighboring counties are much easier.

Kansas

Just got done going through the process. $150.00 for the CCH class, then $110.00 to the Attorney General for the background check. Then $40.00 to the CLEO for fingerprinting. I'm waiting for January 1 now for issuance of a voucher so I can go to the DMV and get the license for another $15.00. I don't mind going through it all though, it's certainly better than leaving them at home all the time.

Vermont

Alaska modeled its changed laws to reflect more the Vermont model; if you can legally own a handgun you may carry.
Yes, even visitors.

But only with no criminal intent.

So, to all who seek a safe gun-toting haven and dislike "WalMart convenience", move on up.
But vote correctly, okay?

PA Rocks!

Takes two trips to the Sheriff's office - the most inconvenient part!

Go in, fill out the form, give them $25 (cash, check, or money order). No class, no fingerprints... just the form. You do need the names and addresses of two character references... I had to go back out to the car and get these from my PDA... just an FYI to take this info with you.

Go back in three weeks, they take your picture and give you your permit.

No hassle.

Good for five years.

CHL classes in Texas can be had at a variety of prices, ranging from about $50 to $225; amenities and facilities vary considerably among the different price classes--the cheapest are minimal, poorly-developed outdoor ranges far from places to buy food and often with primitive sanitation; the more expensive are well-done outdoor or indoor ranges with good sanitation facilities and nearby restaurants. Most classes in the Dallas area do provide the services to do the fingerprints, notarization, and photographs at the class location, along with the range firing requirements. The material presented at the classes is regulated by the state and trainers are monitored periodically to see that they provide the minimal information required. If one pays attention during the class, it is almost impossible to fail the written test. Anyone with at least one good eye and a functional hand ought to be able to pass the firing exam. The CHL is now good for 5 years, and the renewal fee for a senior (65+) is now only $35.

I have renewed twice, now.

Kentucky

Very friendly.

Open carry for everyone, no license required, even if you're from out of state.

Concealed carry ... Shall Issue.

1 day training class about 60 bucks.
Processing fees another 60 bucks.
State Police/Sheriff processing time less than 30 days.
Permit good for 5 years, then another processing fee is due.

No wait to buy handguns, purchase generally takes about 4 minutes including NCIC check. No limit on the number of handguns you can purchase in any given period.

You can have a loaded handgun in your car even without a carry permit if it is in plain sight or in the glove compartment. The glove compartment doesn't have to be locked.

The Forest Service provides many unmanned outdoor ranges for our year round enjoyment. No fees required.

I don't know of any place more gun friendly ... Brady rates us a solid F.

Alaska

If you can own legally, you can carry, no CHP required.

But there is a CHP if you want to go through the eight hour class and the four hour range. It is a "shall issue" permit.

Desert Heat said:
Here in AZ, everyone carries, concealed or not. A CCW is two, eight hour classes and $60. It is a right to carry state, so you can pack in plain view or concealed with the permit. All guns are welcome, assualt rifles, high cap shotties, full auto, .50 and up, anything that fires a bullet or arrow are legal here.

They have made it even more friendly :)

The initial course is only 8-hours now instead of 16 (you can take two four hour courses during the week after work).
The permit expires in 5-years instead of four.
Renewal course is no longer required. Just submit your applicant fingerprint card and $65.00.

After successful completion of the Concealed Carry Weapons Course and receipt of the State of Arizona CCW permit, you will be allowed to carry your firearm in the following 8 states:
ALASKA, ARIZONA, ARKANSAS, KENTUCKY, MICHIGAN, UTAH, OHIO & TEXAS

Initial Permit (8 Hour Course) $79.00 (Shooter's World)
CCW State Application Fee $65.00
$144.00

I like this state :)

Make that 9 states... Missouri honors ALL CCW permits issued from ANY state. :D And if you happen to be a Missouri resident with a MO CCW, it is now reciprocated in 30 states issuing CCW permits. That's more than any other state issuing CCW permits.

Michigan is a friendly state. The costs are listed above. You can carry any piece you own with your cpl. With the new "Stand Your Ground" having gone into effect in October, no retreat is required anywhere, no lawsuits allowed against legit self defense, harder for prosecuters to make a case against shooters. We have some good organizations working on keeping our gun rights and pushing for more. I belong to GLSSA and MCRGO.
The biggest drawback is the stupid handgun registration law.
