How CCW-friendly is your state?

California is definitely not 'Shall Issue'. But it is possible to get your CCW depending on where you live. Most rural counties are effectively Shall Issue, as county sheriffs are given the discretion of issue. Even in urban Orange County a regular, non-connected citizen can get issued with just a little effort. I have and I'm nobody. Sheriff Mike Carona has reformed the CCW system in OC to be as close to shall issue as the law and the powers that be will allow.

Alot of people say that Massachusetts has the worst gun laws . The laws are rediculous here but I got a ccw permit and I'm nobody special . But wether or not you can get a ccw depends on what town you live in . The police chief in each town decides if ccw permits will be issued . It looks like N.J. , Calif . and Wisconsin are worse than MA. .

In Tennessee, it's a pain to get one, but once you've got it, the people are all pretty cool about carrying. Tennessee is a "shall issue" state. The course was about $80 (can't exactly remember the amount), the permit itself was $115, and it was about $15 to get fingerprinted and authorize a background check. Each of these steps has to be done sequentially, so it takes a Saturday (for the course) PLUS TWO days off of work to go through the process.

Here's the kicker: When you go to the DMV here to get your permit issued, you have to bring $115 in CASH! They won't take checks, and they won't take credit cards. But, they WILL take either option if you're just getting a driver's license! (Tell me this law wasn't doctored-over by the anti-gun lobby!)

Once you get a permit, though, the cops are pretty reverent about it. I've never known a person who has shown their permit and been disarmed by the police. When you get pulled over here, the cops just look at your permit and say, "Ok. Leave it in the holster, and hand me your registration..." It just seems to me that EVERYONE here is pretty cool and calm about carrying.

Ok. Example. Check this out:

This guy is helping to run our town!

Samurai- I know exactly what you mean. I just went through the process in Nashville, TN (just got fingerprinted yesterday).

Saturday- handgun carry class (about 8 hours), cost- $55 (varies depending on where you take it)

Monday- Fill out application at the DMV (about 1 hour), cost- $115 cash

Wednesday- Get fingerprinted (about 15 minutes), cost- included in application fee

Now the wait. :( They have up to 90 days to issue the permit. How long did it take for them to issue your permit?

Wow!!! I thought TEXAS was a gun friendly state. After hearing some of your experiences i'm pissed.
I had to go to a CHL class - $150
Send a check to the state capital which is Austin - $150
Then wait for 6 weeks getting a letter in the mail saying my address history was short by 3 months so i had to redo it and send it back in stating where i lived at for those 3 months. Then had to wait another 3 weeks, TX SUX j/k best state in the republic...

Here in AZ, everyone carries, concealed or not. A CCW is two, eight hour classes and $60. It is a right to carry state, so you can pack in plain view or concealed with the permit. All guns are welcome, assualt rifles, high cap shotties, full auto, .50 and up, anything that fires a bullet or arrow are legal here.

+1 another one to the friendly state of VA.

$50 CCW permit

$100 for class

Priceless - having a CC permit and being able to use it.

Another good news in Virginia (permits are usually 5 years) - but then next renewal is LIFETIME! Thanks to our new laws.

I better renew up before these dems change the law. :D

Montana is shall issue.

One six hour handgun course, basically the NRA handgun safety course.

Get fingerprinted, $10. Turn in application, $50 for a four year permit issued in about 3 weeks if you have a clean record.

Mississippi is "shall issue" as well. Application plus $100 fee and $27 for fingerprints, and you're good to go. The only bad note is that they have 120 days to sent it to you, and in my case my permit was postmarked exactly on the 120th day after I had applied.

I haven't seen any mention of WA State. It was one of the first to be shall issue. Requires fingerprints, required to issue in 30 days if they don't hear anything to the contrary, no training req'd, don't remember how much it costs. My permit was renewed immediately when I moved back here from TX. The only problem with it being so easy is that only a few states recognize a WA CCW. The joke is that WA doesn't recognize many if any other states because they're worried about them meeting our high standards. A non-resident can get a WA permit, but it requires showing up in person- no mail order. I don't get stopped much but when I have the cop was cool about it and didn't wig out- saw my CCW whike I was getting DL out of my wallet. Asked where if I was packing and where it was. With the exception of CL3 stuff WA is pretty gun friendly. It's really 2 states- the megalopolis from Tacoma to Everett (equivalent to Santa Monica CA), and the rest (equivalent to TX or Utah).

I took the class on an August Saturday, hit the DMV on a September Tuesday, and the Background Check place that Thursday, and received my permit in the mail on a day in December. It will take them 90 days, to the DAY in Tennessee. And, that's 90 days from the time you complete the LAST step.

I believe that the CCW process in Tennessee is actually a test of one's frustration tolerance. In order to keep people with short fuses from walking around with handguns, the TBI makes it as FRUSTRATING as POSSIBLE to go through the registration process. And, it is... believe me! But, then, once you've got your permit, they KNOW that you're not going to blow up and shoot somebody. You've got to be the Zen Master just to get the stinkin' permit!

My Michigan experience:

Eight hours in CCW class....................................................$100.00
Fifty rounds at the range(had the option to shoot more).
CCW license application fee................................................$105.00
Fifty one days later.................................................license in hand.

Carried today for first time.

As a state Oregon is pretty friendly. Must take a class, undergo a computer crime screen, make application ($65.00? for three years?) and wait until it shows up. Must go to local county for pic and actual issuing.

Florida

CCW Class..........................................$49.00
Electronic Finger Prints @ TPD................$ 5.00
Passport Photo & Notary........................$10.00
Print Processing...................................$42.00
Application Processing...........................$75.00

CCW hard card to my door in 9 days :)

I cant understand why Illinois doesn't have CC!

It sounds like it is a great source of revenue for other states. People are averaging spending a few hundred bucks or so. That has to add up!
