Home Defense

My bedside weapon in the Glock 23 that I carry. I hesitate to leave a weapon that could be found and used against me. All my other guns are locked away and secure.

Any combination of:
Glock 23, with night sights;
Glock 30, ditto;
Colt Government 1911, with Crimston Trace laser sights.

I have a home here in the city and a cabin out in the woods. I use the same defensive set-up for both: a S&W Model 13 .357mag in the bedroom with a S&W Model 64 in 38+P as reserve at the opposite end of the place, out of sight/reach. All have 4" barrels, a fully charged speedloader and a small flashlight stashed with them.

I sleep well.

What do you feel is the best home defense handgun

Ruger P-series in .40 caliber.

I choose .40 S&W because, according to Marshall and Sanow's data (flame suit on) it's as effective a manstopper as the vaunted .45 ACP and .357 magnum and it gives you more capacity than either.

I choose it in a Ruger P-series because concealment is not an issue in HD situations, and they're the Kalashnikov of automatic pistols. The Ruger P is the only automatic pistol that approaches the reliability of the wheelgun.

My HD gun is also my only gun. S&W 6" 686P. Currently loaded with Federal Hydra Shok 110 Grain 38 Special. I am a lot more accurate with 38 Special right now so I use these in stead of the 158 Grain 357 Magnums I have. Most important to me is the ability to hit my target. I am practicing a lot with 357 so I can make them my HD load once I am more accurate.

The best handgun would be the one you are most confident and comfortable with.

Personally I have a lot of guns, so I keep most of them loaded and ready to go. As far as handguns go I have an FNP-40 with a laser pointer attached, a Taurus 92 9mm with a flashlight attached, and a Para Ordnance .45 with nothing attached. I guess it's whatever I get to first or whatever would fit the situation best if I have time to choose.

You have a choice of becoming "most confident and comfortable" with a wide range of handguns. Some of these will suit you better than others. When people ask about the best handgun, that's what they mean.

Home defense for me: USP45 & G17.Expecting more than 1 "undesireables" then out comes my Beretta CX4 & Stoeger 12ga. pump.
