Hikers/Campers: Comments from the anti's?

Interesting question, for me. Camping and hiking by myself was my first reason for buying a sidearm years ago.

It's quite simple, really. If you have any problem while you're in the woods, you are generally on your own for quite a while. While fools may kid themselves about 911 in the city, even idiots can eventually understand that 911 is not a viable option off in the wilderness.

The possible needs are noted above. And, all kidding aside, unfortunately we do occasionally hear of nutcases in the woods.

So, when I encounter someone like this, I'm courteous and pleasant, and eventually I simply ask them ... 'really now ... what would you do if you were attacked in the woods ...?'. If they simply can't see the point, well then I suppose Darwin may get their attention someday.

Not everyone can be saved, you know.

Just tell them this: "Because you never know what type of CRAZY people you may run into"

And make your eyes real wide and flashing from side to side as you say it :D

Really, I can't see going 4-wheeling overnight without packing my gun, woke up one morning with my coleman opened and spread all over the camp! And I sleep thru the whole thing!

'Cause I once went camping with my wife (then fiance) in Illinois, no less, and didn't take a gun. The first night, we heard all kinds of rustling and fussing, and I stupidly and sleepily thought "Damn raccoons." Not wanting to wait until morning to find out if I'd left food out, I came out of the tent with a flashlight. Sure enough, there was a packet of hot dogs on the picnic table, but no raccoons. Instead, there were two coyotes watching me carefully from about ten yards away. It was a little weird, because usually coyotes vanish if you confront them, but there were two and maybe more beyond the clearing and there I was, standing unarmed like an idiot.

I warned Melissa and shouted them away using a piece of firewood as a club, but I also decided to go armed from then on. Next time it could be several coyotes, or a couple of the wolves that are supposed to be re-introduced this year, or five humans.

Blame ANY group that you want (with the exception of gun owners!) that is a social bugaboo for these pansies--pit bulls, NOW, aliens, Colombian drug dealers, whatever...

For many wimpoid liberals, show them a biker, and they'll load their pants.

In other words, you pick the weapon that is appropriate for the situation!

"Because I can."

Don't waste your breath validating your right to carry. If this line intrigues them-- who knows, maybe they were genuinely ignorant of the fact that you can carry openly, or were just oblivious to the fact that self-defense is a possibility even in BFE- then maybe you'll have yourself a chance to convert someone. Does acting like an a$$hole to another a$$hole make it ok?

If they're that hard-core about it, and they know/realize it's perfectly legal, they'll just look disgusted and walk away.. c'est la vie.

Do you really want this idiot to think that you were threatening him, and go down to the ranger station to complain?

Then the ranger, not knowing what the hell to expect, comes down the trail looking for you with his heat, his buddy(who is also packing) and a big dog. He's annoyed because this is the 10th person who has sh*t themselves because they saw someone carrying openly. But he's gotta check it out, because you seemed psycho to the idiot, and for all the ranger knows, you're Eric Rudolph.

Of course, then the ranger will prolly tell you to just conceal the damn thing. Now you've got a headache from dealing with complications of carrying a gun, and the ranger's gotta waddle back to the station :)

Can someone please help me out here? How is it legal for you guys to carry weapons?

Are y'all carrying handguns or long guns? It seems that some of you are carrying handguins without permits, right?

I'm just curious to see if you guys are carrying legally or "illegally".

Thanks,
CMOS

NRA? Good. Now join the GOA!

The NRA is our shield, the GOA will be our sword.

I turn the question around, asking "Why aren't you carrying one?" in a polite-as-can-be manner. Thus I attempt to communicate that the question itself was impertinent and that the tone added insult to injury.

For a long time I tried calm, factual information when confronted by an anti. It never worked, not even once. So, UP THEIRS!!! No longer do I feel compelled to apologize and explain my reasons for being a shooter and CCW holder.
Much happier now.

CMOS,

In CO, some counties are elightened enough to issue CCW. Jefferson Cty mostly ain't. :(

Otherwise, almost everywhere (other than some municipalities) it's perfectly legal to carry openly including nat'l forests & wilderness ares.

I've run across many a buble-gum-color-clad yuppie type while backpacking who grimace "ew! a gun!" These I kindly offer granaola. If they seem to be even willing to rationally discuss anything, I'll talk to 'em. Otherwise, I tell 'em to buzz away on their l'il fairy wings.

I usually explain, if asked, which is seldom, that there have been folks shot, drawn and quartered for stumbling onto a pot plantation back here.

Since this is West Virginia, it is true.

Now, it's been a few years since it happened last, but it won't happen to me when it happens again.

EXPLORER adn others in Jefferson Co. Have you looked into getting the permit from another county? The permit is good statewide. Funny how I, an El Paso county resident with a permit can carry concealed in YOUR county, but YOU can't!

Yes I have looked into it. No dice. In general, my understanding is that you must be a resident of a county in order to get a permit from the county sheriff.

Perhaps one of you who lives in a "good" county with an extra acre or two could subdivide them into 1 square foot plots and sell them off for a few bucks each thus giving anyone who needs one a legal piece of land in said county. Don't know about residency but you mailing address could be:

Mr Soon to be CCW
1234 That Road Lot 155
Etc
Etc

CMOS, in the free state of Arizona we can carry openly in most places. And, that most definitely includes hiking in the forest. No permit necessary ... for concealed carry, we're stuck with a CCW permit system (shall issue).

You see, we're more civilized than some of those cesspools back east ... ;)

This is a joke folks........
Why do I carry a gun out here?........I couldn't have robbed that bank with a knife!
