hiding your house guns (undermount magnets?)

Well, I tried getting a serious discussion going over on tactics but it spun out of control.

If you have a passel of semi-autos and assault rifles--and the gangbangers get their hands on them--lots of people are probably going to die as a result. That's my biggest concern for securing weapons, I'm talking about while I'm not at home--not a while I am at home scenario. I did just buy a barska biometric rifle safe--but figuring out where to bolt it down is more challenging than I thought it would be.

PS--they say it accommodates 4 rifles--but don't count on it if any of them are assault rifles.

It is tough... easy access without making an easy find for bad guys.

These guys probably don't have too much trouble getting guns on their own... but I'd hate to give them and extra one. If your gun is stolen, the chances that it will turn a non-violent criminal into a murderer are pretty darn remote. If he is disposed to the worst kind of violence, then he is a danger to society before he even encountered your home.

It is the violent encounter that worries me.... the theft-of-stuff takes a back seat.

#1 - I don't want to beg for my life or have it ended at the hands of such a low form of life.

With that, you need to be able to escape or defend yourself... and if your stuff is locked away.... you'll be begging or, better, running if possible.

Whether or not you lock up your gun(s) is a personal decision. It depends on where you live, what you live in (apartment v. ranch), your individual thoughts on self defense, your states laws, the neighborhood that surrounds you and probably other factors.

I am not telling folks which decision is right or wrong - I don't think there is one right or wrong generic answer to this. I probably got my back-hairs up a little when I saw a response that seemed to put blame on people who choose not to lock up their gun(s) if a violent criminal breaks in and steals it. I tend to be pretty sensitive to anything that smells of "fault" apportionment involving a criminal and a law abiding citizen - and I acknowledge that the member that I was responding to might not have been doing any such thing.

Think about this:

Is it a billionaire's fault that a high-school drop-out can't find a decent paying job? Is it a school teacher's fault that a student becomes addicted to meth? Is it a my fault if a violent criminal breaks into my house, steals a gun, knife, or hammer and murders someone with it? Is it your fault if a violent criminal breaks into your house, breaks into your glass covered gun cabinet, and steals your AR15 to commit murder? What if it wasn't a gun cabinet but a "cheap" steel safe - is it your fault that you didn't use a UL rated safe?

This is what VPC does - no matter what a law abiding gun owner does, it's always the gun owner's fault if a crazed criminal gets your gun and commits murder with it. It's your fault because the folks at VPC hate you for even wanting to own a gun. I get concerned if I think anyone is buying into this kind of nonsense.

1. I have a minivault. I used it for the 1st month that I owned it. It runs down batteries to where I was replacing about 8 of them every month. When the batteries were dead, I'd have to go find my key just to access my gun - the bottom line - it was a PITA, unreliable and had a battery habit worse than a meth addict!

Sounds like a broken vault. I have a Homak pistol vault and the batteries have lasted more than two years. It's not "biometric" but has push buttons instead.

I agree Skans, that's why I keep a gun in my locked car (enclosed in the center console) with a clear conscience.

I never suggested that NOT locking your firearms up was irresponsible. For me--and only me--the probability that having my firearms stolen and used to immediately kill other people, including potentially LEO's, given where I live, is so high in my Judgment, that the minor inconvenience of having my firearms not accessible while I'm away (that's the whole idea) is inconsequential--especially since I'm armed coming to and from my home anyway. Because the thugs are very limited in their time in and out--I'm pretty confident they will not be able to totally overcome all the safeguards preventing theft of my weapons before the cavalry arrives. My weapons are for my use only--regardless of whether you're a murdering gangbanger or a member of Seal team 6.

This could be problematic if dementia should set in. I guess under those circumstances it would be like Christmas every time you found a gun that was stashed.

I don't have kids, so a safe isn't quite as necessary. Also, I don't want to go through a bunch of steps...so I prefer quick places to stash the gun.

Be very careful. Some states require that firearms be kept in a locked container or equipped with a trigger lock when not under the owner's control.

I keep a clip on holster on the box spring frame of the bed, and in the morning I put it in the safe and take out my firearm for the days carry.

That's a humorous statement but, should dementia become too apparent, it's better to sell your firearms or give them to family or friends.

The welding magnets aren't designed to mount. However, I would think you could just take two of the bolts that hold them together out and use screws of the same size to screw them into something.

If those are, indeed, bolts holding the magnet together, then problem solved.

I thought that they might be something more akin to rivets or some other semi-permanent fasteners.

I suggest if you intend to hide guns all over your home, do it clever like. Having shotguns in every corner and handguns on every table and counter isn't a good idea. And don't hide valuables in the top of your dresser, very common place. Most criminals here only break into places that they know of valuables. Usually it's somebody they know kinda or have been around. And I'm not aware of any break ins while people were home around here. And pretty much every theif here does it to provide for their drug use, I'm not aware of any theif that has other reasons. I live in a smaller town, everybody knows alot of people and if you don't know them, you know someone that does. Pretty much every criminal is a drug user, so around here hiding your prescription drugs would be the smartest thing to do. Hiding guns is a good idea too, guns are pretty much easily sold around here. Everyone has a few and always want more. I think more than a safe is required. If there's a few thieves, they can carry away a big safe. If it's smaller, like a little 10 gun safe, one guy can carry that away. I think you need to hide stuff completely out of site. The idea of a safe is still good but it needs hidden, like in a closet or inside of a wall. A really clever idea is putting a hinge on steps. You can just open it up, it work best with carpet so you can't see the hinges. There are several ideas out there, use them. Don't leave your guns in plain site when you aren't home. And let no one know, especially strangers where any of your guns are.

I responded to a B&E once and the owner, an old timer, reported several guns stolen. He smiled and opened the oven to show me a Colt Huntsman and some other fine pistols. He proclaimed, they got the junk I keep the good ones in here!

Forgetting where it is or forgetting the gun entirely is another problem that I've certainly considered!

I spent 20 minutes looking for my AK a few weeks ago.

I've got some acreage and have considered hiding the good stuff out there while keeping the essentials in the house.
