Hiding handguns around the house ...

IMO it's a very bad idea.
A burgular isn't a houseguest or even a curious child...they're going to root thru everything they can. A good one is going to be able to find any good hiding place. I'd hate to wake up and stare down the barrel of my own gun.
I keep one unlocked, only the one I carry. Everything else and the ammo is locked up.

I still say....

.... 1) the gun in my pocket or belt will probably be faster to access than any gun I might stash; and

2) a burglar is much less likely to find the gun in my pocket or belt than the one I might stash in the sofa, end table, etc.

I just don't see the gain from stashing guns throughout the house. Keep one on you, and the rest in your intended safe room / hole-up room.

My gal and I carry unless were in bed, then our pistols are on our night stands.
Our kids are grown and out of the house but were raised around guns, and have permits themselves.I do have a few around the house but most are for
pest control.I live in the country and have a 40 acre back yard that extends
3miles to the south with no homes just woods and farms, lots of critters.
We keep a scoped 22mag bolt gun behind the patio door drapes and a 410 shot gun in the entry in a corner. My Gal likes her G17 in the cupboard and her pm9 on her person. When Im not home she is a touch parinoid help is a only a phone call away unfortunatley it seams that they cant get there in much less than an hour. When the grand kids come over the first order of buissiness is to put them in the safe.

We have a number of folks posting in the thread that mention how they go around the house and gather up guns when the Grandkids or other children come over.

I see an inherent weakness in that plan. Can't anyone else?

What if the Grandkids stop by when you aren't home?
What if you are at the store... does the wife pick up the treasure map, walk the wheelbarrow around the house and gather up all the firearms?

What if you are out mowing the back 40... do you shut the mower off and run to the house before the kids enter?

After the kids have left (they only come when scheduled in advance! ;) ) do you pull the wheelbarrow out and push it around the house and plop all the hidden guns back in their hidey holes?

What if some crazy meth fiend crashes through the patio door while the grandkids are over... do you refer him to the secretary that schedules all the visit appointments? There's no hogleg behind the couch, under the toaster and attached to the top of one blade of the ceiling fan so you may have to beat the crazy meth addict down with a kitchen broom, but if the grandkids are over, that's how it is.

Please notice the tongue-in-cheek nature of my post. I'm not trying to be a jerk here... maybe just a little funny while posing some scenarios where it seems the plan to stash and un-stash guns around the house may not be the best solution to the problem.

Also -- anyone that gathers up stashed guns before children come over is admitting that there's a chance children might find them. Are we also suggesting that children might find stashed guns that a professional thief could not?

And either way, it doesn't address the problem of someone finding those guns when they are in your house and you are NOT home. When you do come home, perhaps to interrupt them, will they flee your home? Will they attack you? Will they bring a firearm in to your home to attack you?

Will they use one of your stashed firearms to attack you?

The probability of coming home to someone ransacking your home is somewhat low. But probably no lower than your need for a firearm stashed in multiple places around your house.

Sevens -

I don't really agree with your position, but I agree that stashing and un-stashing guns is also impractical. Based on your comments and those of others on this very useful thread, I have moved my loaded carry guns from an unlocked cabinet to a drawer which I keep locked. So I thank you for that. :)

Hey, it all works... I'm just trying to show the angle that I'm seeing and share that angle.

If something occurs to me that I have missed, I learn from that. If something occurs to someone else that they might not have considered, maybe that helps them a bit.

I think we all gain from the discussion!

Brilliant idea if you live alone.

Stupid idea if someone lives with you.

Sevens, your post (#64) hit all the points as far as I'm concerned.

Funny, yet logical and well thought out.

Stashing guns would be great if you could come up with a gun that only fired when you were holding it. Maybe it would have a chip in it or you could wear a special ring....

Electronic gun safes cost about $80. Buy two, place one on each side of the house; this is probably enough to cover all reasonable scenarios.
