Hiding handguns around the house ...

I have one hidden in a great spot downstairs. With the exception of whatever I'm carrying on any given day, the rest are all in one room.

I also have several hidden around the house, because if they aren't handy when you need them, then they're just extra pawn-fodder for the intruder later. And yes, I have a young kid in the house, but he goes to the range with me, knows the difference between a toy and a real gun, and knows not to touch them or allow his friends to touch them "if" they happen upon them. But they're well hidden in last-place-you'd-think places.

And, most importantly, I trust him.

That seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Your willing to bet lives that your son is immune to a mischievous impulse? Or immune to peer pressure?

Owning a musical instrument does not make you a musician...
There are those, of course, that are musicians...and...

Guilty as charged. I have a Glock 26 attached to a magnet drilled underneath the dining room table...

I have a .357 magnum inside an especially designed wall clock just for that purpose. I have a S&W 642 inside a hollowed out book in my downstairs den's library. Upstairs, a similar book holds a .380 Kel Tec. Um...my .45 ACP is always in the night stand drawer next to the bed. My 590A1 shotgun is behind the couch and my M1 Garand is, in a nice bag, inside the closet. I have no kids...and the wife knows about some of the weapons...

I dunno...I carried weapons in the Army for 22 years, I carry a M9 on the job each day...weapons are always near at hand. I do not see a problem.

Now...knowing some of the people I have dealings with at various ranges...it would scare me to death if they did the same. Let's face it...not everyone has the same skill sets.

Most days when at home, I have a gun on my person. The possible exceptions are when I am asleep, in the shower, or rolling around on the floor playing with the dog.

There are other guns strategically placed about the house (two story). My wife knows where each of them are and also knows not to move them. The downstairs guns get put back in the safe when guests are expected or the Grand Kids are coming (when they show up, everything goes back in the safe except what I carry concealed.) Each gun is hidden in places where the average person would not find them unless they tore the place apart. I am very comfortable with this arrangement. For those of you that have read some of my posts, you know that I was the victim of a home invasion robbery in which I came very close to dying. All my guns were locked in my safe during that incident and I was unable to get to them. That will never happen again.

And, if you think I may be a bit paranoid, one of my .45's in on my nightstand with an AR-15 and a Shotgun hanging on a wall rack above and behind my bed. It lets me sleep at night...along with a most excellent alarm system and a 4 legged early warning system.

I have loaded firearms all around my house, but I do not have any children around. If kids do come over the guns get cleared and ammo stored in an alternate location.

I hid a gun once, still cant find it

Yep. That's the problem. It can happen pretty easily, especially with multiple sites.
Pete

Aint that the truth, I found a gun once in a barn on the place my Dad bought. I saw it and it looked like a old bb gun that was rusted beyond belief. I picked it up and saw it is a winchester model 70 in 22 short. I took it arapt and de rusted it, it is my barn gun and has vanquished many a varmint in the 20 years I have had it.

... out of curiousity, with regard to your potential liability in Iowa for unsecured guns, does that apply in the case of burglary?

In Florida, liability only applied if the person who found and misused the gun was lawfully in the dwelling. IE, if your guest, or your kid found and misused an unsecured weapon, you were liable. But, if the neighbor kid broke in and stole it, you were not liable.

I'm pretty sure Georgia is the same way.

It wouldn't surprise me to find that some states hold homeowners liable for the criminal conduct of others. Not sure if Iowa falls into that category.

Not in favor of multiple stash sites...

... for reasons mentioned by others. I generally have a gun on me at all times, except when in prohibited areas.

There is a nightstand gun, and a shotgun in the master closet; those are there because the lady does not carry.

If we had kids, or invited guests who brought kids, those guns would be in the safe with the rest.

Come to think of it, the pistol lock box I ordered just arrived. Think I'll set up the combo on that one, and then the nightstand gun will actually be secured, too.

For you guy's that carry all the time, I have a problem keeping my pj's from sliding down due to the weight of my 1911 in a IWB, have any suggestions.
I tried my Miami Classic but my wife complained about my gun poken her in the backside all the time

You mean you don't sleep naked in nothing but a holster belt and cowboy boots? :D

Realistically, my "at home" gun is a S&W Mod 64 revolver that sits in a holster on the desk next to my bed. That's good enough for me - I usually keep the doors locked regardless - even in the middle of the day - so anyone getting in is going to be interrupted at least long enough to get through that.

I do occasionally carry around the house for the purpose and "evaluating" a carry rig/method though prior to actually wearing it out and about.

Just my .02$- (.01$ after our Dear Leader gets his cut)

There have been some very good points made on both sides, but this this is what we do.

We have three guns strategecely placed around our home, and they are in places that I am confident will never be found by anyone who does not have specific knowlege about them. They have been in place for many years, during many, many parties and get togethers, and not once has anyone even thought to be in the area where they are. In addition, everyone that is invited into our home is aware that we are gun owners, and no one has ever even touched the ones that are on display.

We live in the middle of nowhere, and I think we are about as safe as we can be, BUT, Police response time is at least one hour, also, if they use GPS, TomTom, or any other computer method to find us, it will get them hopelessly lost! The gps directions show two roads that are supposed to lead to our home that do not exist anymore!! So we are on our own, and being that we are both disabled, running is not an option.
And that is the first time I have ever disagreed with "Sevens", and hopefully the last.

JMHO, and as always, YMMV

I am not sure, I will ask my buddy he is a deputy. I would think not but the law can be real crazy. Nebraska is going that way too since a cops kid took hin gun and killed a educator at the school he was transferred to.

I would really feel bad if my kid or one of his friends found a gun and used it accidentally or otherwise.

See, I hid gunsonce, my step brother was stayng at my place, I was staying at my girl friends wierd situation but we were waiting to sell my place. Anyways. He was distraught cause he robbed a booze store then rapeda girl, he was headed for prison. Well he found my guns, took a 22 to Dads place and shot himself in their living room. I showed up in time to see the folks handcuffed and taken to the cop shop to see if they shot the gun or not.

I cleaned up the mess and there was a lot of it, bone, brain and blood.
It never leaves my mind that if iwould have taken them.....

or he could have killed Dad......

or done other bad things with my gun......

It never leaves my mind, ever. I dont hide guns or leave em where others can get at them. ever

This pretty much describes our position as well. I'm surprised that a lot of you seem to let your kids and your kids' friends run wild around the house without supervision, getting into anything they please. There are no guns in parts of our house frequented by unsupervised kids, and no kids go unsupervised into parts of the house where they are not welcome. Period. End of discussion.

No paranoia indeed, what good is a gun in a nightstand if you are in the livingroom watching tv and a bunch of home invaders break down your door. I don't see anything wrong with it unless you have young kids in the house, etc.

IMO, if they aren't secured, and I mean locked in at the very least a single gun vault, I think it's a horrible, horrible idea.

I agree with the thought above. If it's not on my person it is secured. The only guns anyone could see or touch without looking in my office safe or in the (locked) master bedroom are the 10/22 and the old Sears/Ted Williams .270 that used to belong to my gramps (hasn't been fired in 30 years) which hang on a gun rack in the family room (locked). Kids in house. My house seems to be the hangout spot for every child on the street between 4 and 10. And only one is mine!

Back in about 1994 I lost the 21A that used to be my backup gun by stashing it in the couch cushions. My girlfriend moved out suddenly one day and took the furniture. I never saw my little Beretta again.

Sitting around the house right now...

... checking the forum, with a S&W 442 .38 in my pocket. Fits just fine in a pair of casual shorts; doesn't pull down too badly on a pair of sweatpants or lounge pants, either. Not sure what the challenge is....

major +1

My gun is always on me when I am at home for this reason. Miami is becoming known for home invasions lately. Always...I mean always. Wherever I go in my home, and out of it. Call it paranoia. I call it prepared for the worst but hoping for the best.

Paranoia is irrational, being prepared is rational. Where people draw the line between rational and irrational is purely subjective.
