Hiding handguns around the house ...

No paranoia here, just keeping the security situation covered.

I've got three or four handguns stashed here and there around the house in defensive positions, most in what I consider "the last place anyone would look" as well as on the nightstand right at hand, with a .410 shotgun. All tuckaways have flashlights in place as well.

Don't tell secrets of placement. But is this a good practice?

IMO, its not a bad idea unless you have people coming and going through your house on a regular basis - especially children and their friends. Sooner or later someone that frequents your house is going to find one. If you have kids in the house it is a very, very bad idea.

I hate to admit in public to actually doing that but I do. However, when there is a gun safe, that's the obvious place one would assume they would all be. The problem, though, is that the more you have hidden, the greater the chances are of finding one, if anyone happens to be looking.

I always thought it would be nice to have a house with hidden rooms, secret passages and so on.

My brother lost a small handgun that way once.

His wife moved it to a different place, which happened to be in a cabinet near where the kid's snacks were kept. Neighbor kids were there frequently, and "helped themselves" to the snacks. One of them also helped theirself to a small handgun. Those kids are now adult age, but the gun has never been recovered.

I don't have any kids, but...

No, I don't stash guns around the house. Never have. Instead, I wear one every moment I'm dressed, including at home. It's not that hard, and really not that big of a deal to do.

And this way it's always under my control. All other firearms are in a safe.

I have a shotgun in the bedroom, and my gun safe is in my office. I have a handgun on me at all times so I guess that I can say that I have a gun in every room!

If you don't have kids around or a parade of people in and out of your house all the time, I don't have an issue with it. I have a couple of loaded guns in the basement and one stashed up stairs. Nothing on the first floor but I'm usually either up stairs or down stairs.

We've discussed this before. IMO, if they aren't secured, and I mean locked in at the very least a single gun vault, I think it's a horrible, horrible idea.

Really.

I don't mean to sound like I think less of someone who chooses to do it that way... but in the end, I still believe all that you are doing is to scatter loaded firearms around the house that might be used against you.

Or, as was mentioned, might be found by curious children or dishonest guests or (more likely?) someone invited in the house to do some kind of service.

If you have a license to carry in your state, then carry in your home. That's what I do. I don't carry while asleep in bed and I don't carry in the shower.

The rest of the time, I carry. There's one accessible, and nobody can stumble across it whether they are trying or not.

I have several handguns but don't scatter them about the house. I have my 2 carry guns on the first floor in a lock box and the rest on the second floor in a homak style pistol cabinet with a lock (it's by no stretch of the imagination a safe). Seems to work for me and the boys can't get to them.

This reminds me of the prank of filling your medicine cabinet with glass marbles in the powder room to see how nosey your guests are.

I do have one "stashed" gun,,,

I was watching an interview with a career home invader,,,
He was doing life after his 3rd strike in California.

He said that often he would wait to invade a house,,,
Until the light came on in a bathroom.

Literally catch them with their pants down.

Since then I keep one revolver in a sealed baggie in my bathroom,,,

Silly maybe,,,
But that statement got to me.

P.S. No kids, spouse, or roomies to worry about.

That sounds assinine:cool:

Hello GregInAtl,,,

What's asinine?

Him waiting until the homeowner went into the bathroom,,,
Or me keeping a revolver in the medicine cabinet?

I do not have children and no children guest. I have some of my guns displayed and some out of sight and handy.

Periodically delivery people come and workers come and they see I have guns. It is a remote area, and I want them to know I am armed. The ones which are loaded are typically out of sight. Typically the conversation come up do you like to shoot and were you in the war. The response is yes and yes.

At my age, I do not want to hide them too well or they will become lost guns. :)

It was intended to be a joke. Check my spelling of asinine....ass inine

I guess if I had to choose 1 it would be him waiting. Nothing wrong with a medicine cabinet for a hiding place

In my opinion just carrying at home is superior to stashing guns. It's always on you (those few seconds to run to the cabinet may cost you big time), and you don't have to worry about other people finding your stash.

I always thought it would be nice to have a house with hidden rooms, secret passages and so on.

A friend of mine made a little hidden gun cabinet in the wall above the door of his home office. He kept his AK 47 in it. I was sworn to secrecy when he showed me his handywork.

His house burnt down a few years ago taking the secret compartment and the rifle with it so I suppose it's safe to talk about it now.

What if a burglar has found a stashed one and you happen to walk in, just then?
I would be shame, and downright embarrassing, to get shot with your own gun.

Easy to do, my cousin is a contractor he has installed several. I asked him about a nuke capable bomb shelter underground. He isnt up to that yet :)

In nebraska there is a place you can go for 25 grand and stay a year if needed. Is underground and will sustain nuke attack.

I hid a gun once, still cant find it :(

In Iowa if you leavfe a gun unattended and someone gets it and uses it you have just broke the law so be very carefull about leaving loaded or unloaded guns around the place.

Never used to be liable for the idiotic things folks can do....

But is this a good practice?

Depends on the situation and your floor plan, I think. Not a good plan if there are kids running around you place, regardless of any other factor. But if it's you and the wife, it could be a good plan.

Personally, I keep two 357/38 revolvers at opposite ends of the house. One in the bedroom and one in the den. My floor plan is a long narrow 1950s ranch style place with the front door smack dab in the middle. I don't want to get caught unarmed at either end with no access except through the intruder(s). No kids, they're all grown and moved far away. I feel like I'm covered.
