Hi Point

I have a hunting buddy that does not have much money and he needs to pick up a HD gun. I stopped at the local Cabellas and looked for what I could find in his price range.....Maybe a Nagant would work but just for the heck of it I had the clerk set out a Hi Point in 9mm.

To me it felt like a cross between an airsoft and paint ball gun but after doing a search here my personal opinion is that it would work fine. He does not have the funds to pick up a Star if there was another one sitting around but the Hi Point he can afford and a box or two of ammo. He is coming by later in the day and I think I am going to suggest it for him.

I have both the .40 and .45 models. They were both barely over $100 at the time (and can still be purchased for under $140). I will never claim that either one is a work of art, but they are both fun to shoot and well worth the money. I lost a seer spring (completely my fault) during cleaning. Hi Point mailed me a replacement free of charge. The guns are heavy and have limited capacity considering their mass, but for basic home defense on a budget, Hi Point will get the job done.

I hear that sometimes you can get one that needs a break in period, and some may need +p to cycle during the first few magazines.

After that they work fine.

I suggest a minimum of a couple hundred rounds of fmj ammo through it, then a box or two of the preferred hollow points, at least, before calling the pistol fit for duty.

Andvtherebare much cheaper places to get one besides cabelas.

Hi-Points for what they are are good guns.
Ugly as sin, reliable and bulky.
For the money a good value.
If this is the only gun this person owns and it is all they can afford it is a great value.
If they can afford a little more money look at some of the guns coming out of Turkey and the Philippines.
These are getting great reviews and I have owned a couple that functioned flawlessly.

From my experience I would say that Hi Point guns are ugly but get the job done. I owned a 380 a couple years ago and it did not have a single failure. As has already been mentioned, I would check somewhere other than Cabela's though. They usually have pretty high prices on guns. If your local Cabela's is as expensive as mine your friend could actually get away cheaper buying a Taurus pt111 online than buying the Hi Point in person at Cabela's. A Hi Point 9mm at my local Cabela's is $199 plus tax and transfer, which in my home state would end up about $230 due to Tennessee's high sales tax. Kentucky Gun Company currently has the Taurus pt111 for $197.95 shipped, which would add up to $217.95 total if you have an FFL that charges $20 for transfer.

Note: I have no experience with the pt111 and am not saying that it is a great gun and that your friend should buy it. I am just using it as an example to show Cabela's inflated prices.

Nothing against Hi Point, thought about buying carbine myself, but I'd lean the direction of a shotgun in the assumed price range. H&R Pardner or Maverick 88 would be good choices.

If he really wants a handgun, in the $200ish range you have the PT111 as someone mentioned and also the Zastava M70A if you like the old school styling. I think the Armscor M200 revolver also runs about that range when you can find them. If you bump up to the $250 range, you can get a SAR B6P, which is what I own. Its a CZ75 clone and a darn good bang for your buck handgun. A Hi Point would serve fine, I'm just not a fan of how bulky they are and just how cheap they tend to feel.

After checking out the Zastava M70A mentioned above - I'd take one of those any day over a Hi-Point. Darn nice looking 9mm....cheap! I might have to get one for kicks and giggles.

Agree if he wants a handgun. For a carry handgun you can look at the SCCY which is a 9mm. Much smaller and lighter than a HiPoint and has a similar no questions ask life of the pistol warranty.

You can get either a SCCY CPX-1 (has a safety) or a CPX-2 (without safety) for significantly less than $300 new if you shop around.

My son loves his Hi Point 9mm. It is UGLY but goes bang every time you pull the trigger. It also hits the target pretty good. I suggest you go through Cheaper Than Dirt instead of Cabellas if you need to save some money. They have the 9mm for about $125.

Hi Point = POS! There is a reason for the lifetime warranty....you need it.

If your "hunting buddy" is hunting, I assume he has some kind of a FA. As such, he has a HD FA for the time and not completly w/o ability to protect his home. Personally I would make due with what I have on hand and save for something of quality. Can get some good used deals on a reliable FA without breaking the bank. Many great deals on Remington SGs out there as mentioned previously which I would take over a Hi Point. Also, if you are really strapped for $$, you probably don't have the cash for quality ammo. Ammo costs for break in of a semi (500 rounds normally for defensive FA) may cost more than the FA.

I have always preferred to save towards a FA of quality opposed to a POS immediately...but that is me. I also have teen age kids and understand today's "instant gratification" generation to have things NOW. Not my style, but to each their own.

If you will take the time to read all the posts from actual Hi Point owners over the last few years you'll see a totally opposite opinion. I have taken the time to read those and I find FAR fewer instances of needing warranty work than I do with a Kimber which costs many times more - AND reports of Kahr actually doing the warranty work correctly and timely which cannot be said for Kimber.

Not arguing that other mfgrs may have their own problems. However, being in the industry and having handled hundreds of Hi Points of various types, they are designed as disposable FAs, thus expected to break on a regular basis.

I have a Hi-Point C9 that I bought just to see if they could possibly be as bad as those who condemned them say they are. After several hundred trouble free, very accurate rounds it is obvious that those who refer to them with all the pejoratives have not only never owned one, they have never even shot one!
They are very rugged, as shown in numerous youtube videos. Just Google "High-Point torture test".
My C9 is as accurate as any 9MM guns I have made by Beretta, FEG, Glock, Kahr, Star, and Walther.
The Hi-Point is an ugly gun. Heavy for caliber, top heavy, crudely finished, and it has a very heavy recoil spring requiring quite a bit of force to operate the slide.
But it is also nearly indestructible, accurate, and affordable to someone on a tight budget.
By the way, I was so pleased with my C9 experience I just bought a used JHP 45acp Hi-Point. After all, what's to lose, if it doesn't work I can send it back, and get it repaired, or replaced, NO questions asked!

Your bias obviously has kept you from viewing the four youtube Hi-Point torture tests. Or at least with an objective attitude.
The links are not all that hard to find. Every time a Hi-Point thread is started the links to them are posted.
Yes, they are disposable. Hi-Point says don't take them apart to clean them. Just send them back after 5000 rounds, and they will send you a new one!:D

Hi Points ought to be more popular, you hear all the time on forums "Function over Form", but it isn't often applied to the Hi Point. Granted, they are heavy and somewhat off balance. Most people want something nicer, but for some folks setting aside $200 for a firearm is a big deal, and the Hi Point is a solid reliable gun that fits the need, unlike JenningsBrycoJimenez whatever they're called now.

What does FA mean? I've never seen that shorthand. Your post makes little sense to me with out knowing what FA you are referring to.

The only good thing about Cabellas is that they are open long hours so we could go down and look at the Hi Point. The LGS is closed for a couple days some kinda show so if I can wake the friend up to the Hi point it would come from the LGS as he carries em too.

Quality ammo is no problem as I can powder coat some more bullets but I can also do some polishing so it will take less rounds to smooth it out.

As to the shotgun he has one but going out to the chicken coop at night with a single shot shotgun aint to smart when coons, yotes and cougars and bears are in the vacinity.

Yep bears cuz we aint got no snow and it warmed up to 59 the other day so the low elevation bears aint hibernating yet.
