Here's why so many people were killed in the Virginia Tech Shooting!

At any college or university these days, there are always a few 'non-traditional' students in every class. They are typically older, married people who are going back to school after a career in the military or after raising children. Professors, faculty and staff will also be older. The problem is that "No CCW on campus" rules and laws don't exempt anyone from the ban.
Correct. Over half the victims in the VA Tech shooting were 21 or over.
So I can attest that a weapon is not always the best thing to have around.
There's nothing about having a weapon that obligates you to pull it out. If one wanted to, he could go so far as to allow himself to be murdered without unholstering his firearm.

But there are certainly circumstances when it's obviously the right decision to draw--and in those circumstances, a person's right to have a weapon to draw in self-defense should not be infringed upon.

Furthermore, just because you feel that you would have unjustly shot someone with your pistol had you posessed it during the incident you mention doesn't automatically allow you to paint everyone else with the same brush. Let's say I agree with you that it's not such a wise idea for you to carry a weapon. The fact remains that you had the privilege to CHOOSE to leave it at home. The people at VA Tach had no choice.

"In a confined area like a campus"

Confined? Never been to Va Tech, have you? The campus is 2600 acres. What's that, about 3.5 square miles? There are a couple of hundred buildings and an airport on campus among lots of other things like a golf course and the one-time punchline of many jokes - the Duck Pond.

I'm most DEFINITELY NOT a conspiracy theorist, yet I find this inexplicable correlation strong enough to be somewhat bewildering.

It seems that these things have a habit of happening at exactly the right time to promote the anti-gun cause. I wish that I had the psychic ability to understand this timing.

Ever see the movie "Telephon"?

And the odds aren't so astronomical...law-abiding citizens have already used handguns to stop school shootings in at least two situations that I'm aware of.

Three school shootings have been stopped by citizens with firearms. Two were with handguns and the third was stopped by a guy with a shotgun.

One of my favorite queries for antis is this:

You are standing outside of two rooms.

In one room there are 100 people, who have no criminal record, and all of those people are lawfully carrying a firearm.

In the other room there are also 100 people; but there is only one person, who has a long criminal record, who is unlawfully carrying a firearm.

You have to enter one of those rooms.

Which room do you enter?
