Henry's New 41 Mag--Vaporware?

Bit of a mystery to me too rat. I looked at your link for loads and those powders. Things like H110, w296, w231, 4227 etc are all generally better at higher velocity loads in my experience. I do have some 700x but haven't tried it in a low-velocity load--but a hard-cast guy I talked to told me HS6 is both good and accurate for mild 41 mag loads--but again I've never tried it.

HS6 is listed in the second chart I linked to but only with heavy loads. You can almost never go wrong with Unique and I suppose now Universal since it is close in burning rate to Unique. The light Bullseye load listed would be were I would start.

I've got those--might try them one day.

No Stag I am not set up for the 41 anymore. My guns and loading stuff for it is long gone. Besides my 44 mag will do the same thing. The 41 is too close to what I have already. I would buy a 35 remington or a 444 marlin before a 41 mag.

And I really like 22 mag rifles. And revolvers. I have two of each now. I have around 5500 rounds of 22 mag on hand. I have shot a 17 and wasn't very impressed. Maybe in a bolt gun the 17 would be OK but in a lever action with open sights I would be limited to around 150 yards or less. So the 22 mag makes more sense to me.

If you do try that light Bullseye load make sure you use lead bullets and be sure the bullet makes it out of the longer rifle barrel. It won't be a problem with a handgun.

Yep. But a 44-40 would mean new dies, new brass new bullets and a gun that shoots a pop gun load I already have with lead bullets loaded with 8grs of unique. And the 44-40 is in the old toggle link design isn't it? So its a weak action that can't be pushed, not that I push any loads now. I would buy a 41 way before a 44-40. And I would buy a second 357 before either of those two.

I als have a .357 Henry lever and it cycles .38 special cases fine, except, as Kcub said, wadcutters. My plinking load is a -145 grain plated bullet over 4.2 grains of Bullseye.

Just out of curiosity I was looking at Starline's site and they say the new 41 special should work in anything that fires the 41 mag--not sure how well that would seal in a rifle chamber but there you have it. I may call Henry myself to find out if shorter low-power cartridges are OK.

Does anyone make 41 special ammo?

Reeds lists it on back order. I will try it but really the HSM Cowboy loads are good enough for a light load in my book. I could see wanting to use 41 spl if you have a revolver so chambered but my 41s are old model Ruger 41 magnums. And for that matter, full power 41 magnum does not recoil so much even in a revolver anyway which is why I love it and it's better than 44 magnum (unless you live in Alaska).

I called Henry this morning--their official position is basically "even if it can shoot successfully--we do not recommend shortened low-power kind of ammo due to timing and cycling issues"
