Help Me Pick a Gun I Don't Know I Need

alienbogy

If you want to have a slice of history try a S&W model 10 ? 60 years what the cops carried ? I have a model 64 only difference is stainless. When I shoot with my grandson who is 13 years old and he says to me I think this weapon is off I say let's see and aim my S&W at the target most of the time I say no it is you? We have many different guns and different cals but when I want to hit what I am aiming at I use my 64? This is just my humble opinion but with my 64 S&W I can hit what I am aiming at.

What do you need?

:)
Everyone should have some kind of 1911 to complete their collection.
The 1911's are my favorite and I probably have too many myself.

But you probably need to have at least one .45 auto in your safe.
I believe you will be happy choosing either these models: Colt, DW, Kimber, Springfield (or my favorite) a Wilson Combat.

I don't know about guns you _don't_ need, but it sounds like you really need a 1911 and a .44 magnum revolver.

A commander length, alloy frame 1911 (like the S&W 1911PD) is a great winter carry gun.

And being in the northwest, if you do any hiking you definitely need a bear socialization device. :-)

Think about this

I've accumulated several guns as well but decided to do something else. If you already have a gun safe, the next logical step for me was to shop around for optics. I like the red dots for tactical needs. Pistol, shotgun, or rifle. Optics are awesome and cost about as much as a gun.

Just a thought.

I recently reached the "I have everything I need" point.
now I have a S&W .500 on layaway for my first gun I really don't "need".
man is my wife is understanding!:)

AR or AK.

Get one while you can. I know plenty of people here in CA banging their heads against the wall because they didn't one while they could. At least an un-neutered one without having to field strip it to load and/or limited to 10 rounds. You may say you don't really "need" one. But funny how it became so desireable and must have when they became out of reach. If you're more on a budget I'd lean towards the AK.

Once you get past the really "necessary" guns for yourself, it becomes absolutely unAmerican not to have the following:

1. 1911 in .45 ACP - several good brands at the mid-level price range like Colt, SW, Springfield, Dan Wesson and more. The only caveat is that you might find yourself addicted to the 1911.

2. .357 magnum double action revolver (full size) -- I would get a SW (several models to choose from) but some prefer Rugers. Colts are a bit pricey but are not being made anymore.

3. A snubby revolver. There's always room and need for a nice SW alloy J-frame.

I'm going to go against the grain and recommend against a new gun. Save your pennies and get a classic - something like a Luger, Mauser Broomhandle, early Colt SAA or some other type of collectable. Something that is going to increase in value yet you can still enjoy.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm reading them all and waiting for one to click. Some feedback:

> 1911: Didn't really care for its accuracy in the military.

> .22 for practice: I have a Ruger Mark II for handgun practice and a Winchester 9422 for rifle.

> Hunting handgun: I use my Old Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt handloaded with 300 grain JSP's.

> Pocket rocket/LCP: I've only fired a little 380 once, years ago, and it was the most miserable little barker I ever popped a cap on. Now, the LCP maybe wonderful but that experience has soured me on mouseguns.

> Rifle: Yes, I posted in the handguns section but it could be a rifle.

> Bofors: What, an antiaircraft gun? Upon consideration, I'd rather have a ZSU 23-4, but the care and feeding would get spendy.

> 44 mag/500: I've fired a number of 44's over the years and didn't care for the recoil. I recently fired a cylinder-full of a friend's 500 S&W, then handed it back and declined the offer of more.

> 357 Mag: Got one, a Ruger Security Six that was my first handgun purchase. It's kept in the ready service locker in the bedroom.

> A classic: Now that's intriguing because it offers up a whole world of possibilities. A pair of SAA's would be wonderful, but hard to justify given my existing pair of clones.

Right now the two nominees are either an HK USPc in 40 to match my duty weapon and free up some practice options, or an 1861 Springfield repro because we went to a Civil War reenactment recently and they sure looked like fun.

FN FS2000. Definitely can be listed as a "want, but don't need" purchase.

My first choice would be a quality 1911. I like to point to STI 1911s or 2011s (doublestack). Even their Philippines made Spartan is a great 1911.

Then, the FN FS2000 and a bunch of Pmags.
