Help Me Pick a Gun I Don't Know I Need

I know, not another 'what gun should I get' thread, but here's the deal:

SWMBO stated that after I bought two pistols in the last 6 months I couldn't buy another firearm until she had new sofas. I interpreted that to mean (and I'm holding her to it) that she PROMISED that I could buy a new gun once she got new sofas.

The new sofas are in the living room as I type this.

The problem: I don't know what to get.

I have EDC covered with a Ruger SR9 or HK P7 depending on clothing. I have hunting rifles and shotguns covered. I have .22 pistols and rifles and Cowboy Action Shooting sets. I have muzzleloaders for blackpowder season.

For the first time in my life I don't really have anything on my 'gotta have it' gun list. Tough problem, I know, but I'm feeling kind of lost.

So, tell me, what gun do I need that I don't, right now, know that I need?

Sounds like you might "need" a 1911. I humbly suggest what I consider to be one of the top 3 (possibly #1) best looking guns ever made, the Dan Wesson CBOB:

Or one of it's larger brethren, should you be so inclined.

Either a 1911 or a Ruger LCP.

The 1911, well, it's "the" semi auto handgun to a lot of people and everyone needs at least one. Not an easy to conceal gun but all and all, much easier than you'd think and my 1911 has become my fall/winter got to CCW gun.

As far as the Ruger LCP, it's the perfect deep concealment gun. Great for hot summers where t-shirts and shorts are the norm. Fits great in a pocket due to its small size and low weight yet it packs enough punch to be considered enough CCW gun by most people.

Maybe you need a good .22 for practice. A Walther P22 or a Sig Mosquito. Or try to upgrade one of your EDCs. Maybe the Ruger gets the shelved for a Glock or XD or H&K USP or 1911 or...or...or:rolleyes: Well, you get the picture. Go try some stuff. If nothing grabs you now, maybe something will when you shoot it.

It does indeed sound like you need a 1911. Maybe a Dan Wesson or a custom from Fusion?

Dam, you really do need more guns. How about a hunting handgun of some type. Maybe a TC Encore or a Competitor brand breech loader in say 7mm-08 and then a couple different extra barrels. OR a big bore revolver with a redot scope for hogs and bear. Or a fulltilt racegun from witness gold ,limited or hunter or a wilson 1911. You can spend 800 to 3500 in this bunch. Maybe more furniture first.hehe The p7 and sr9 are a couple of nice 9mm.

I see you're in the Puget Sound area. Better get with Playboypenguin, I'm sure he could steer you in the right direction with his rather large collection.

I'd say:

1. 1911 in .45 ACP DW is nice, I prefer Colt's.

2. AR-15 carbine in 5.56

3. .357 or .44 DA revolver, my preference is for S&W

Either of these three should round out your collection nicely!

Go to the gun store and harass the employees to let you hold everything, you should fall in love with something. Looks like since you have EDC covered, I think you should look for a full-sized pistol for your collection. Try out a Springfield XD(M), Glock 34, Sig P226, FNP, whatever you really like. A medium sized revolver like a S&W 686 or Ruger GP100 would fit that niche well too. You can call it your PDC (paranoid day carry).

Well I'm assuming since you put this in the handgun forum that a rifle is not in the running... but I'd get an M1A, unless I already had one. Assuming I had the same 1600+ to spend my second choice would be either a duty ready 1911 like the Springer MC Operator or the Kimber Tactical II. The new HK45 is a close-ish third.

If you have the extra money, now's the time to upgrade your NRA membership to Life. Still have money left over?

Look at the Beretta CX4 carbine in 9mm, .40SW, or .45 It's a classic gun you will love to have but have no real need for. Designed for short-range defense.

I'm looking at the sub-compact CZ 2075 Rami. A 9mm (or .40SW) in a pistol not much bigger than most .380's. Avail with manual safety or decocker, and also in poly.

The one I REALLY don't need, but want, is the K98 German Mauser. Yes, as depicted in the Mitchell Mauser ads. I'm shopping around now.

Maybe something in a knife??????

Good luck!

I would simply tell your other half; "Honey, I'm not sure what I want. The "Average" gun costs about $500. I'm going to set $500 aside, and when I find the gun I'm really attracted to, I'll buy it then." Not only do you NOT have to buy something today, this will also show that you aren't buying on impulse and that you are disciplined enough to wait. Then when you find the AR-15, 1911A1, AK47, Springfield XD, or whatever it is that catches your eye, it will be a much more responsible purchase. One that you thought about. There's nothing that says you have to have another gun today. Don't bow down to impulse buying. It causes problems.
