Head space Gages

CW308. I have been out again with more loads. My first trial was at 100 yards
( to close IMHO ). Last Sat i went out with 50 more ( 20 rounds of each load and 10 rounds of a new COL)
41.0 gn 4166, 168 Serria Match and BR-2 Primers

20 at 2.79
20 at 2.82
10 at 2.833
Until then Both 2.79 and 2.82 shot very well ( at 100 yards) When I got to 300 on Sat. Both shot very well, But what surprised me is the 2.833. They shot very tight Little under 1.5 inches at 300 yards. Now I have 50 more ready to go, but I loaded 20 at 2.833, 20 at 2.836 and 10 at 2.840.
Will let you know how it goes

4runnerman, what 308 rifle are you shooting, your next test is with a jam. I full size with .001 case headspace & a .002 jam in the rifling, seems to be the sweet spot for my rifle also with a light load, IMR 4064 40.5 gr under a Sierra 168 gr. HPBT. Looking foward in testing 4166. I like stick powder with a low charge, fills the case to contact the base of the bullet, don't care for compressed loads. Sunday is my range day.

Seeing how the OP is ok with the direction of the thread

Yea 4runner what you got :D I know it's a custom build or at least not a barrel that came on the action . I was looking at your latest to shoot COAL . I'm thinking that 2.840 is pretty long for a 168gr bullet . Is the barrel new-ish or has the throat eroded some on that barrel ? When my Savage was new I don't think that length would have chambered . Now 2800rds later and about .060 of throat erosion , I'd have no problem with that length .

Also how much of that bullet is seated in the neck at 2.840 minus the BT?

CW308. It's a Savage FVSS, I had SSS make me the Dog Tracker Stock in Blue.
It was my FTR rig. Which I only shot for 1 year, I had to admit that I can not shoot of a bi-pod . You guys that can- I tip my hat to you. Takes a talent that I don't have.

Metal-
168 Serria Match- OAL- 1.207
.806 still sticking out
.401 in the case with .002 neck tension. I send my Dies and about 5 dummy rounds in to Forester, For 10 bucks they custom hone the die for you to what ever you want.
As I mentioned to CW308- It is a FVSS, I can seat out farther then 2.840, but, so far have not needed to. The barrel does have about 3000 rounds down it, but even when it was new i could seat at 2.840 with it.

This thing has pulled sub MOA since the day I got it. I have the same rig in my 223 also-FVSS. That thing is un real. We play Tic Tac Toe at 100 yards with 9MM cases. Have to shoot the primers out of them and call your shots. Golf balls at 300 yards is easy. PS I live on a Golf Course- Fairway 1 out the back door and Tee box 2 out the front. And needless to say I get about 6 to 10 golf balls a week.
We put wood screws in them , tie a string to that and hang them at 300 yards.
It's a change from just shooting paper

4runnerman, Nice rifle, good shooting & shooting golf balls must be fun. No such thing LI NY Max range 200 yards paper targets, still makes a good day. Be Safe Chris
