Head is spinning!

I know people hate ammo vs ammo threads, but my head is spinning like crazy. My ammo selection will depend a lot on accuracy, availability, and if my gun will feed it reliably (Glock 19).

In my area, I can get:
Remington Golden Saber (not bonded) 124gr (no +P) for $20. 25/box
Speer Gold Dot 115gr, 124gr, 124gr +P, 147gr between $21.60-$23.99. 20/box
Winchester PDX1 124gr +P and 147gr for $20.99. 20/box

What do y'all recommend of these 3 ONLY? Yes, I expect numerous answers.

I've read test results, read reviews, and I've watched countless videos. I plan on doing wet newspaper stuffed jugs (5 in a row) with 4 layers of denim up front (later in about 2 months; got to save sweet tea and milk jugs).

Thanks for yalls recommendations in advance and God bless,
LB

I have used Remington Golden Saber ammo with good results, but I personally prefer the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P in my SIG P229.

why only three... lots of different ammo mfg's out there are to limmit it

plus you never said what the purpose is for SD or training

Get a box of each, try them out and then pick the one that you perform the best with.

Then go online and buy it in bulk.

I use the 124gr+P Gold Dot but only because I got it on a Police contract overrun.

When I burn that 1000 rounds down, I will find something else.:D

The reason just these 3 is because I can get them readily at any point I need them without having to wait on shipping or ordering something my gun doesn't like; however, I may find a round I like, and then, I may buy online. (Crow Hunter beat me to my point of view)

This is strictly for SD. I train with Federal FMJs from Walmart because I can get them easily and cheap.

I also prefer American made items, and no, my Glock isn't.

I'm of the mind that any defense round, by a major manufacturer, is about as good as it gets. Reliability in YOUR gun and price are the deciding factor after that.

The subtle nuances in terminal ballistics is, in my opinion, trivial. One may penetrate a couple inches more. One may expand faster. One may be 75 FPS faster. I could likely set up a test to "prove" one is superior then simply change the criteria and "prove" the other is better.

If there were one round that were truly better than the rest, no one would ask the question anymore, and, every cop out there would be carrying the same round. But, thats not the case. Different bullet selection criteria depend on what round is chosen for any agency, and, most civilian carriers.

If it helps, I like the Gold Dot. NYPD has as many, or more 9mm's in service than anyone, and, they chose the 124 +P Gold dot. When I carry a 9mm, thats the round I carry. When I carry a .40, its the 180 Gold Dot. Why? Its what my department issues. Easily defensible, proven round.

Amongst those choices I would get the Speer 124 +P. It expands very well in bare gelatin, and even does pretty well after passing through denim. The extra ~100fps over the non +P makes a big difference on the FBI denim test.

I would also recommend putting a fair number (5-10 depending on taste) of 147gr FMJ at the bottom of the magazine. The vast majority of self defense situations should be over in 8 rounds or less. If you are still shooting after that there is a good chance that it will be because the assailant is behind cover of some kind. In that case what you want is maximum penetration through harder materials like steel or wood, and for that FMJ > JHP, and 147gr non+P >= 124gr +P (which is harder to find anyway) > 115gr anything.

I checked ammoman last night and he basically has cases of Speer Gold Dot in whatever flavor you want for very good prices. 115, 115+P+, 124, 124 +P, 147, you name it, he has it.

Along with 124 gr Lawman FMJ. I have had really good experience with those. Accurate with a pretty good consistent powder charge behind them. Better than UMC and WWB in my experience.

I would check out a couple box or 2 of the Gold Dots locally and see what works best for you and then get a 500 or 1000 rd case of it. Should last you for a while.;)

I personally favor the Winchester Ranger T 147gr RA9T.

Penetrates to around 14" in the FBI Heavy Clothing test and 4 layer Denim test and expands to around .66"

But of the ones that you listed I'd probably choose the Gold Dot. I've never been able to track down results for the PDX in ordnance gelatin.

I keep a magazine loaded with Winchester PDX 147gr. My SR9 likes them, and various test/review results are positive.
That said, I wouldn't have any issues about using Gold Dots either.
