"they also serve, those that stand and wait" there are those that don't consider me a viet vet because I only sreved on ship that stood of the coast and provided NGFS. They think there is no risk. I consider being shot at by a 200mm shore battery a risk. Especially when all you have to shoot back with is 5" guns (aprox. 126mm). We did have the advantage of movement where they were in a fixed position.

served

I served in the Navy from 1976 to 1980. Two tours of duty in the far east. Nearest I came to war was Carters attempted rescue of hostages in Iran in 1979. Lucky for me nothing came of it, as far as war. The ship I was on broke down while in the Persian Gulf, and we left. Found out about the rescue attempt in Pearl Harbor on our way back to California.

United States Navy

I served 23 years, 3 months and 9 days in the US Navy! I joined the Navy in Mar 21, 1977 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in Jun 30, 2000. I finally received my official retirement certificate last month transferring me from the Fleet reserve to regular retirement status. It would have been 30 years if I did not retire, now I am no longer subject to recall. :(

fomalley, you are a veteran in my book too!
