Although I do agree with the other posters that a .22 LR caliber is probably what should be next on your purchase list, they did not list any draw backs.
Here are the drawbacks, from personal experience and friends comments about mine:
1. You shoot more.
Less time spent with the kids and doing other chores.
2. You'll find yourself looking for another type of ammo when your shopping.
Good Lord knows we do not need another reason to spend our money.
3. You have to share your gun with a significant other.
The S.O. may want to spend more time with you and may be, or become, a better shot than you are.
4. WTEOTWAWKI happens, you will not be able to hook up with military units, who only use 9mm and 5.56 ammo.
Everyone knows that you will not be able to share their ammo.
5. Reguardless of what you own, the .22 LR will be used against BG's and it will not stop them, just make them extremely mad.
Despite the fact that you have other handguns for home/personal defense, you will always grab the .22. I do not know why this happens, but according to the home defense
experts I know, this is a valid assumption on their part.
6. It will be of no use to you in the comming food riots.
????? Yeah, I could not figure that one out either.
7. You will save a ton of money on ammo, because .22LR is so much cheaper than most any other box of ammo.
And if you are worried about the cost of ammo, you should not be shooting anyway. Everyone knows that spending more money on fewer rounds is the smart thing to do!
8. All .22's are a pain in the butt to clean, because all the parts are smaller.
I guess you are supposed to completely strip the gun after each range session and clean it to factory new condition.
There are probably another 10 -15 more I have heard, but I am already laughing so I will not bother typing them. I am sure you get the gist of the idea... The .22LR is a fun round to shoot, it is inexpensive and it provides hours of enjoyment at a fraction of the cost.
Not everyone likes it, but you are not shooting with everyone. Reading these forums I think most people have started out with a .22 caliber rifle or pistol and still enjoy the little bugger. It is a great round to develop and hone your fundamentals on and, again, most people recommend it for new shooters.
Seriously dude, you gotta have the .22
