Handgunners: anyone consider a pistol caliber carbine for their home defense gun?

I'm posting it here, rather than in the Rifles forum because I wanted to make folks at least think about the option. Mods, feel free to move it, if it really needs to be moved.

I was just looking at the Beretta Cx4 Storm. To me, it is a great-looking gun, and attaching a light & laser would be super-easy. Heck, in 9 mm, one could also scope it and it would make a good all-around gun. Cheap enough to shoot, high velocity enough to be used out to 100 yards, not too much kick, and pretty accurate.

In 45 ACP, this would be a fantastic home defense gun, not to mention being super accurate at any handgun range. Extra velocity is free, too. I've been out of it for a bit, but I see that Ruger has already crapped out with their PCCs. It's a shame.

I think I'm going to get either one of these or a lever-action 44 Magnum for my next gun.

I think it would be a great idea..

Short, lightweight, and eaiser to point and shoot then a regular pistol.

They have a lot of shortcomings if you were going to use them for actual combat.. But I think in an HD situation they would be damn near perfect.

In .45 acp of course :)

I've always wanted to get an M1 Carbine for the range and possible HD. The .30 caliber carbine round is more of a pistol caliber, in line with the .357 magnum and there are pistols chambered for it.

I have one in .45 and it would make a good HD choice, though it would be nice if they made a .45 mag over 10 rounds for it like they have for the 9mm version. Pretty compact and easy to shoot well. I don't use it that way because it's easier to secure a pistol in a quick access safe near the bed than a rifle. If I didn't have kids around and could leave it out I would reconsider or even consider an AR with the right ammo.

I have owned several 9mm carbines over the years...Marlin, HiPoint, and UZI.
They were always my first choice after the handgun that is always handy.
Of th three I owned, the UZI was the best...
However, I sold the UZI to finance my CMP M1 carbine, which now fills the role of house carbine.

Maybe if you went the SBR route, or better yet, select fire. Other than that, if its going to be the size of an AK or AR, Id rather have them.

Actually, I have a couple of 9mm SMG's, and still prefer the AK or AR, whichever happens to be about. The rifles just give you more options, and vests for the most part, are no longer an issue.

I don't have a problem using a PCC for home duties.

My main EDC guns are 9mm Glock. I have a 9mm Keltec Sub 2K that takes Glock mags in the corner of the bedroom.

It's zeroed at 10yds, the absolute longest distance I can take a shot in my house. It is also easy to fold up and take with me.

I don't have any particular desire for one. While a pistol-caliber carbine would certainly be a formidable home defense weapon, I don't see them really having any significant advantage of a .223/5.56 or 5.45x39 rifle. As it stands, I already have a converted Saiga .223 on HD duty. The only reason that I might consider a pistol-caliber carbine is because they were recently made legal for deer hunting in my state (Indiana still does not allow deer hunting with true rifle cartridges unless they're fired from a handgun, go figure). Even then, I'm pretty much looking at a lever-action, Ruger Deerfield, or single shot as most of the semi-auto carbines out there don't come in cartridges that are legal for deer hunting.

Here's my Mechtechsys.com 40 S&W carbine. The lower is a Glock 17 (yes, 9mm lower). It's long enough that I would prefer to respond to "a noise in the house" with a Glock 23 with laser/flashlight combo.

Can the Beretta Storm shoot 45 Super? Say about 500 rounds a year!
OR, how hard is it to obtain and change to a recoil spring thats about 22 lbs?

This would be a great Home Defense and hunting carbine. :D

I like pistol-caliber carbines. I'd certainly consider one for home defense, particular if in an apartment or close-housing situations where over-penetration would be a great concern. Not that pistol-rounds don't penetrate, but would be stopped before a rifle round.

Matching with a handgun would be all the better, especially with shared magazines.

Smaug,

I think its a great idea. 9mm +p out of that long barrel will
give you .357 ballistics without the deafening noise and flash.

Easy to aim and control.

While there's several options to choose from next to the bed, including the G-22 which is perfect, I still prefer my pistol-grip Mossberg 12g. 590 Mariner. It holds nine rounds. The first one is non-lethal. The next 8...not so much. ;)

I choose the pistol grip because you can get around corners easier with it compared to a full-length buttstock. Other pluses include the reliability with any pump-action shotgun.

The CX4 would be a good choice for HD. I don't used mine for it, but it would work. I also wish that Beretta would come out with some high cap mags. The majority of my .45 auto's have a larger cap than the carbine.

Here is my Storm. Never considered using it for HD although I'm sure it would do the job. I added the fake suppressor, Lasermax red laser, grip, Bushnell Red Dot, and 30 rnd Mag. It sure is fun to shoot but my HD gun is a Mossberg 500 with 00 buck.

The CX4 should make a fine home defense weapon. I recommend the 9mm for it's high capacity mags and cheaper to shoot. The 9's are made in two different mag types, I suggest that you ensure yours is made to accept the Beretta 92 mags and they are more available as opposed to the PX4 mags.
