Handgun preference change with age?

Lately I've been looking at Colt 1911 style .45's. The thing is, I turn 30 this month. In the last week or two I have started drooling over deeply polished blued steel and nice wooden grips instead of the "tactical black" and SS finishes and rubber grips that I previously desired on my handguns. I have even began to drift toward the blued steel revolvers as opposed to the SS and titanium/alloy models when I hit the gun shops.

Is this a sign of old age setting in?

I turn 30 next month, it may not just be you. Don't get me wrong, I like my semi-auto ninja death guns, but the last three guns I bought are all revolvers...and the two before that were Garands...

Something about wood and steel, no stinkin' plastic...

Maybe next year I'll get into pointy sticks.

I guess I'll start worrying when I give up my guns for a good whittling knife and a goodblock of wood to chip away at.

Glad it's not just me. At least one other person owns up to it so far.

I think that our priorities change even subconsciously as we age. Deep down you really, really wanted polished blue steel all along.

I actually prefer polished blued steel or a nice hard chrome to "tactical black" and stainless. Strictly cause it looks better.

But life's to short to own ugly guns.

The drooling is a sign of old age but as long as you are still interested in handguns period there may be hope.

I turn 30 in June. In the last six months, I've had a complete turnover in my gun inventory -- everything but my shotgun. Single action revolvers to Glocks, to Brownings, to Walthers ... now, I've got 3 1911's and a Walther PPK/S, German made, 1969. My favorite 1911 (at the moment) is a Colt 1991A1 Government with stag grips. Yep, I'm feeling older, all right ... shooting 300 rounds/week ... grinning all the time ... maybe I'll turn 31 soon.

Seriously, most of my fascination with the 1911 stems from how much better I seem to be able to shoot them. I'm starting to bring targets home to show my wife.

I turned 30 once, about 15 years ago. Funny thing is, I always shot revolvers. Last summer I bought 5 Glocks. This spring I am shooting 1911 style pistols and thinking about a Sig. Has nothing to do with old age, just experiencing something different.

I turned 30 a lot more years ago than I care to contemplate - but then, and now, I still prefer blue steel. Especially if engraved.

Nickle, chromed, aluminum and stainless - and now titanium - have their place - rust resistant, pretty (to some) and weight. I don't have any objection to any non-blued steel for a working gun - and for some purposes want the stainless and/or titanium. But, as an object of love - give me blued steel.

I just wish the makers would market many of the stainless and/or alloy guns in a blued version.

You're all PUPS!

I turned 35 TODAY! (How did I spend it? running a pneumatic jackhammer for a friend who is ripping up the steps, sidewalk & part of the driveway to his house. OUCH!)

Anyway, I've ALWAYS been a revolver fan first & foremost.

Yeah, I have semi-autos. I shoot semi-autso. But when push comes to shove, the gun I'm picking up is a Smith & Wesson 19 or 28.

Well, I'm 3* years old, and 1911's & wheelguns definitely got more interesting the older I got.

I gave my beau my ParaOrd P12.45 in return for my old *&* 625-4 that he's had for a while earlier this year. Is that a sign of approaching middle age? (Of course, 1 month later I bought a Glock 33, so I'm not that far gone!)

Hi, guys,

I am a little older than 30 (67 to be exact) and I have never really gotten to like the "space age" stuff. All the "wunderneunen" begin to look alike after a while, even if they are "wundervierzig" or "wunderfunfundvierzig".

I still like S&W revolvers (made by the real S&W) and GI Model 1911A1 pistols (bought some at $29.95 - won't run out for a while). But Glocks are OK and reliable as can be, and Berettas are not bad. The SIGs are a class act. The EAA Witness may just be the best gun for the price around. I don't care for the 1911 clones simply because most of them are poorly made of inferior material, cast junk and MIM parts where there should be forged steel.

Just turned 34 earlier this month. Ten years ago the first question I asked about a handgun was "How many rounds does it hold?"
(Pray and spray!) Saw "Lethal Weapon" and had to have a Beretta 92, "15 in the clip, 1 in the pipe!" I still have the Beretta but now I AIM at the target and actually hit it once in a while! My last two purchases were a .38 J frame and a 629 Classic, both purchased before S&W sold out. I'm considering a Ruger #1 now, black powder after that. Maybe I'll get a slingshot after that!

Think!

I think you have something there.

I started out with Glocks, worked my way up to SIGs, made a brief detour into HKs and am now firmly in the 1911 camp as I approach 34...
(and God is it approaching too fast)

I think it's got more to do with shooting experience. As a recreational, non-LEO shooter, what I wanted for my first guns a few years ago were the modern looking concealed weapon guns. They give off an image of similar to new stereo equipment--bells and whistles are better.

The more experience you acquire as a shooter, the less you want the gun to think for you and the more you want the gun to do just what you tell it to do. The more I shoot, the less I want the gun to get in the way of things...double actions, decockers, etc. just become gadgets in the way of pure shooting.

And I found myself turning 40 and buying my first 1911 because it was a gun that met my maturation as a shooter...at least that's what I keep telling myself. It's got nothing to do with age, it's just a matter of wanting less clutter.

Now I think I'll go get fitted for false teeth, buy a hair piece, get bi-focals, and have my prostate checked...and have you noticed how loud all these young people play their music nowadays???

Triggers exist to be pulled... again and again.

Well, I turn 21 next month, and aesthetically my favorite handgun is the Colt New Service.

But I'm an odd fellow, not prone to engaging in youthful activities (such as thinking a Kel-Tec is cool).

Well, I turned 30 last month...
Last year I had HKs and ARs... all Bad and Black.
Now I have some gorgeous 1911 patern guns...
all .45 and all Springfield Armoury. Some Blued - some SS... Some wood grips, some Houge rubber.

Its not so much that tastes have CHANGED...
I would say more likely my taste has become more REFINED... I can appriciate the more artisitic details other than HE or TENNIFER Finishes... Its no long necessary for a gun to have NITE SIGHTS for me to like it.

No - this isnt getting old - it's growing up.
Now getting old would be going to .22's because recoil of bigger pistols is too harsh.

I turned 23 in September and my taste changed in a year. I started with glock and s&w autos and now I am buying up every revolver in sight. I just want to be proficient with all types of hanguns. Shooting blows away every sport and hobby I've ever had. (except striper fishing)

I sold my motorcycle so I could buy a ruger blackhawk and a s&w model 60. Now the weather is nice and I still don't regret selling the bike.
I wish I could win a shopping spree at the GUN ROOM.
Maybe when I turn 30 I can mount an M-60 on a Harley fat boy?

Interesting topic. I hadn't really thought about it before, but I think my tastes have changed.

I really enjoy my semi autos, most of which are stainless. However, 4 out of my 5 purchases in the last year or so have been revolvers, and 4 out of 5 have been blue.

I do have to admit that most of my wood grips are collecting dust in the parts box. They are pretty, but those darn ugly Hogue rubber things shure let me shoot better...

Like Jim all the latest "whizbang-trick-of-the-week" guns look alike to me. I grew up on single action revolvers and lever action rifles. To me nothing is more beautilful than a good deep blue job and rich grained wood.
I have noticed the last few years I've started shooting lower power loads in my .44's though.
