H&K VP9 vs Glock 17

A two dollar C clamp from Wal Mart will make tearing down a Glock mag a snap to do!

thanks for the tip agent but i don't own glocks anymore. i got smart and bought a springfeild xd.

I got real smart and bought the VP9. It's an amazing pistol: low felt recoil in my hands; accurate; reliable; interchangeable side panels and back straps which put my hands in a high position; fast shooting; amazingly great trigger out of the box. Compare all you want but unless you have shot both, it's just words.

I recently purchased a VP9, and having owned both a Glock 17 and 19 over the years, I vastly prefer the VP9 over the 17, and would be happy with either a VP9 or a Glock 19.

The VP9 has an excellent trigger and superior ergonomics. IMO it is one of the best 9mm pistols on the market in it's price range, along with the Walther PPQ and Glock 19.

HK VP9 without a doubt!
All the Glock's advantages and none of Glock's disadvantages. Everything that a striker-fired gun should be.

Ergonomics, price, simplicity of design, repair parts availability, track record as far as reliability is concerned and availability of holster and repair parts would be my concerns if I was looking for a primary defense side arm. However, if you already have a other handguns, it really is down to which one gives you the warm and fuzzies when you pick it up.

I like Glocks, H&Ks, CZ's, Browning, Walthers, oh and Sigs, Steyrs oh my... If I were considering a medium framed 9mm, I'd get both. And no, I am not married...my gun habit is not a negotiation point. When and if H&K comes out with a .45ACP version of the VP series, I will be adding that to my list.

I own and shoot both. Both are great guns. Out of the box, I much prefer the stock VP9 trigger and sights to what you get stock on the G17. You can upgrade these components on your Glock but you'll end up spending more money. The VP9 is more ergonomically adjustable with its replacable rear and side backstraps. The Gen4 Glocks have adjustable rear backstraps, which are nice, but the VP9 can be customized more to fit your hand.

I think the VP9 offers a better value for the money than the Glock 17. You can upgrade the Glock 17 to make it as good or better than the VP9, but you'll probably spend another $200-$300. Only you can determine if that's worth it. As an example, I have a Gen3 G17 with a Vanek trigger, night sights, and Talon grips. These upgrades cost me around $300. I own 2 other G17s but haven't done the trigger upgrades on these yet.

One of the things I like most about Glocks is how simple they are to detail strip and maintain. Compared to most guns, Glocks are very simple to maintain. There are only around 34 parts to most Glock pistols. Anyone can take a Glock armorer's course and learn how to completely detail strip and maintain a Glock. I don't know much about HK pistols yet or how easy it is to take An HK armorer's class, but I hope over time I can become as familiar with the VP9 as I am with Glocks.

The bottom line is I like both of these guns. I would never tell someone they made a mistake buying either one. I do think when comparing an out of the box G17 and VP9, the VP9 is the better value.

Right now, I'd pick the G17 because I've had nothing but good experiences with it. Reliable, accurate and easy to maintain...

I own the VP9 along with several other HK pistols. The VP9 is great right out of the box. The trigger is sweet, the grip is easily adjusted with back straps and side panels to fit virtually any adult hand and the magazines are dependable and metallic. I am currently having a leather holster built for my VP9. I can get Truglow night sights for it if I so desire and the rail easily mounts a light, or laser/light combo.

Given the option of a HK or a Glock I'll take the HK any day. This happens to be a reasonably priced striker fired pistol considering the quality you're getting. As for waiting to see what how it performs after being on the market for a year or so why wait? HK has a lifetime warranty.

The VP9 is a soft shooting pistol. Recoil is minimal and it is truly ambidextrous. Given the choice between the two the VP9 is by and far the better pistol. :D

I have never owned a Glock 17, but have put tons of rounds downrange through them. It is a fantastic, proven handgun that only "needs" one thing, different sights. A good set of trijicons runs what, $150-$170? If you pay for those on top of you $500 Gen4, you are more expensive than the HK. The trigger isnt horrid, and frankly it is easy to get used to. I love the capacity, and while 2 extra rounds isnt a big deal, it still bothers me a little.

My VP9 is the LE model. Came with 3 magazines and the night sights. It needs absolutely nothing. I paid $623 for mine taking part of a group buy on HKpro. I already had a bunch of P30 magazines, so I have tons for it.

The VP9 is the better deal for what you get out of the box. But to me it isnt THAT much better than the G17. Cannot go wrong with either.

I tried to like Glocks, they are a low cost and accurate handgun. One of the Glock 30's that I owned had the documented problem of not being able to load a full 10 round magazine. Tried everything to fix the problem and finally fave up. Both of the Glock 19's had the well known the brass-to-forehead problem. Needless to say, all of the Glock's got sold.
On the other hand, all of the HK's that I have owned have been 100% reliable, accurate, ergonomic, functionally perfect and excellent workmanship and finish. The recent introduction of the HK VP9 follows the tradition of another excellent HK handgun. The ergonomics are second to none, accuracy is excellent and the trigger is excellent as well.
IMO. Glock perfection is overrated, but for the price the Glock 17 isn't a bad handgun, if you get one that doesn't have the BTF problem. However for about the same cost, the HK VP9 has better ergonomics, better trigger, better finish, and HK reliability.

I saw few videos of HK VP9 . The slide does not stay open after the last shot. Something to do with how one grips the gun?

Yes. It has never happened to me, but some shooters put their thumbs high on the gun which hits the slide stop/release.

One of my shooting buddies is a HK nut and has let me try his, including a recently acquired VP9.

I have found the HKs to be quite accurate, but they don't quite fit my hand, trigger reach is a bit long, and they tend to have more muzzle flip than other guns. FOR ME, they aren't really worth what they cost either.

I did really like the VP9, however. Less flip, fit my hand pretty well (the interchangeable back straps and palm swells are the best feature of the gun), and accurate. Trigger was OK, I didn't think it was immensely better than a Glock (I like the Glock reset better) but it was decent. Don't care for the magazine releases. Reasonably priced. If I were to buy a HK, it would be the VP9, but for me, it doesn't perform leaps and bounds better than the Glocks I already own.

Either are a fine choice.

My choice would be Glock. The British Military thinks so too as they just scrapped all their Hi Powers and issued Glock 17 as standard side arm issue.

Of course the VP9 had not been introduced yet when they made this decision so the comparison is moot.

I own a Gen 4 Glock 17, and am guilty of never firing the HK VP9. That being said, I like the Glock 17's track record for reliability. I also flat out shoot a G17 well.

With money to spend on other guns and not having a need for the HK, I guess I'll have to pass on this model. That does not mean that it is inferior in any way to the old Glock.
