Gunshop Gurus strike again.....

I talked a new shooter (female) friend of mine into buying a snubbie revolver. She picked it up the gun today and some ammo. The gunshop guru told her " you wont be able to hit farther than 15 yards with a snubbie" So I took her to the range and demonstrated that you could hit at over 50 yards with it.

Why do they do that to people?

The reason I talked her into a revolver was because she was so confused by my semi-auto and she handled my revolver much better.

Two reasons: ignorance and envy. Because they do not know themselves. Gun shoppe commandos, when not putting neon/xeon laser/phasers on their weapons, sticking pistols in their waist bands, or eating donuts, are forever holding forth on the capabilities of firearms. I have yet to meet one that has been to a single, solitary skul; however, they all tell me what "guns" can and cannot "do."

Good on you and her. Rev.s are simpler to operate for alot of new shooters. When I introduced the sport to my exwifes husband..he consistantly shot the snubbie better than any of the 3 autos I brought along. He outshot me with it that day. Cool.

The gun shop commando's are sometimes the best source of bad info to new shooters...which is SO wrong! Some newbies go into gun stores not knowing anything, expecting the guys that work there will have a clue! Ive heard guys almost scare people away in stores....you just want to say "HELLO"! "What are you smoking?" :D Oh well...

IMO, people who have proper information and instruction from the start, have a much better time learning and are better shooters usually. Its especially important if they are quite a bit nervous, as some people are..kind of ironic there.....some are more nervous after listening to a gun store commando :D
Shoot well

Good knowledgeable gunshop "gurus" are tough to find. I know of a couple places in SoCal where the gunshop sales dudes are simply order takers & shouldn't be looked upon for anything more than starting DOJ process for ya. As long as you get a fair price for the firearm you wanted, be happy at that.

You might not be able to hit a nat off a flys butt at 50 yards with a snubby but you should be able to hit a target most of the time.Glad your friend likes her gun,its alot more fun when you can hit your target.

I saw Bob Munden, in an episode of Armerican Shooter, do some pretty damned impressive things with a .38 snubbie. They are just as accurate as any other handgun out there, it just takes getting used to it.

The two gun shops I hang out in, are staffed with knowledgable, involved shooters. If this were not the case, I would not hang out there. :)

The only thing I can hit with a snubbie at 50 yards is a barn door!:D :D

I use mine for defensive purposes and if the target is 50 yards away I am quite willing to disengage(run away) as quickly as my tootsies will carry me.

For fun on the range I think 50 yards is great but unless the target is big I won't hit it. Guess I'll have to keep practicing!

Not only is Bob Munden fast he's a damn good shot. I saw the episode of American Shooter mentioned above, Bob was popping party balloons at 200 yards with a 2" Smith, OFFHAND!

Anyone who says a snubby can't shoot is either speaking from ignorance, or telling you about their shooting skills.

There is a FAQ in the beginning of the new Sierra reloading manual and one of the questions is whether or not a short barrel is less accurate than a long barrel. Their answer is that no the two are both the same in accuracy, but the longer barrel will be easier to shoot more accurately due to sight radius. It would seem that a longer barrel might help stabilize the bullet more, I don't know, but the sight radius part makes sense. So my question is that if you shot two revolvers, one with a 2-3 inch barrel and one with a 6-8 inch barrel with red-dots or scopes would you see any difference?

makorov, no. In theory they should be exactly the same in accuracy capability, this is assuming that they are identical in every way except length. Mechanical accuracy of the barrels is the same. Longer barrels are easier to shoot, but not more accurate. In a lot of real world cases the shorter barrel is MORE accurate mechanically, as it is stiffer. Less vibration and flex makes more consistent results, this is one of the biggest reasons for bull barrels.

The gunshop commando in the original post is ignorant.

Surprisingly, the guy taking your order at Mickey D's is not all that knowledgeable about beef cattle and the man who sold you your Ford Taurus not only doesn't know the firing order of the V6 under the hood, he doesn't know what a "firing order" is.

The gun shop guy could have been talking about me!

It is exceedingly difficult for me to hit anywhere near the center of the target at 15 yards or beyond.:o I'm a pretty OK shot, but if I'm using a .38 snubbie, well...the bad guy had better be close. My wife is not this way at all. She regularly set's up her targets at 50 yards for her Taurus Total Ti 85. Shoots groups about the size of my fist at that distance. (How can that BE!! I've been shooting for decades!) I don't know whether to be proud or humiliated! (I'm proud:) )
I've heard about the guy who can pop balloons
at great distances with a snub. Hell, I couldn't even SEE a balloon at 200 yards! Are you sure you don't mean "200 feet"??

Tamara, "I believe a firing order is the order you shoot the BG's armed with AK's and M-11's as they use the Taurus as a get away car ...Right?..." Would that be the 2.0L V6 or the 2.3L V6 ?...both are 1-4-2-5-3-6.
The short sight radius as stated, is the main dissadvantage to a snubbie over a longer barrelled gun...but given their intended purpose...oh well. The same movement of a barrel will have more pronounced effect on a short sight radius as opposed to a longer one, regarding 'flyers".
The snubbie is a very accurate weapon...my 60LS was and SP is dead on POA/POI with 125 gr JHP 357 ammo. With my little red light on my SP its more accurate than I am...but Im catching up slowly.

Shoot well

Before you jump on somebody too hard...

we have a range at our store. I'd bet most people that buy from us can't hit crap at 15 yards. If they were shooting a standard silhouette, as many rounds would miss the paper as hit. We have holes in the ceiling, the walls, and the floors.

Doesn't mean the gun isn't accurate, but a lot of shooters aren't, particularly with small handguns. It takes a LOT of trigger control to hit well with a handgun.

All our counter people are shooters. Our average is probably around 20-30 guns personally owned each. If your store has non-shooter selling guns, quit buying at chain stores or get a different retail shop.

We try real hard to steer people to what we honestly feel is best for them, not what someones else thinks should be their newest toy. We had a customer trying like crazy to talk his non-shooting wife into getting a full size 1911 for CCW.

After learnin the basics with a Woodsman, Hi-Standard etc......many women learn to like and shoot well the 1911 in Mil Specs.

I believe in letting the lady make her own KNOWLEDGEABLE choice. Key word being KNOWLEDGEABLE >

Short barrel has the potential for being more inherently more accurate than a similar but longer one. Resonant vibration frequency of the short barrel is higher...hence the amplitude of the vibration is lower. Applicable only when the projectile can reach stablizing RPM/velocity.

Couple of wierdos are smashin the windows of your SUV with your wife and kids inside........you are 50yds away and in the only cover around because you had to go get water for the vehicle. You are at 8,500" altitude and vehicle boiled the coolant out because the $4.00 radiator cap failed.

You going to just watch because you know your snubby won't reach that far ?

Whatever you choose to carry, learn to use it to the best of your ability.

Sam

additional info.

I spoke to her today and she said that the "guy at the store" told her not to use .357 Mag in her .357 mag gun because she couldnt handle it. Now she is afraid of the round. The most effective round in that gun.

It is a Taurus .357 Mag with ported bbl.

Either way another new shooter to the ranks of the american voting public:D
