Gun store/range issue

as callahan said

Oh, I might add that I will be happy to tell all interested parties about this special experience.

I agree with this approach. I have had several of these experiences with different businesses, but never with a gun store.

Most people in the business of selling fire arms ( with any sense ) know that it is a purchase viewed by most as a large investment. Something that person will have for long time, possibly forever. Its just a fact. People want to look, feel, hold, and compare . . .then possibly walk out and think about it for a few days. How you treat that person at that time is often the deciding factor whether or not they come back to close the deal.

I live by this . . .Word of mouth goes along way, and I know alot of people. Customers opinions will make or break your business. I dont have alot of money, but I expect to be respected when shopping and not forced into making a purchase. Take your business elsewhere if possible.

I had a similar experience at a shop. I let the guy know how bad he screwed himself. I had 3k in cash in my pocket. I would have just told him I tink I will put my cash into someother store's pot. I have never been back to that shop, I seem to hear about 50/50 good to bad on thier reviews. I guess that is why they are going out of buisness.

I've done most of my business with bud's, but even with them, they lost a few of my sales over the phone. Both were high end S&W PC revolvers.

I asked how the recoil was on the aluminum 327 R8, and a few other quetions, I hate the saying, "I don't know sir, I don't know sir, I don't know sir" I said ok thanks and called www.Bigskyguns.com and bought my S&W 327 R8 M&P for about the same price as Bud's around $1100.

Bud's lost my other purchase of a S&W 627 PC V-comp too, because Bud's didn't have it listed on the revolver, or PC page and I didn't want to talk to them anymore. Later, I found out Bud's had it listed with there Semi-auto site, after I bought one from somebody else.

Ohh well, I still bought some gun's from Bud's after words, but I ordered from there site without having to have to speak to anybody on the phone, and I think they like doing that kind of impersonal business anyway.

IMHO many "sales" people that work at gun ranges/stores are not placed because they were good sales people with great sales skills. Most of the ones I've encountered were or seemed to have been hired because they were "gun" people. However, just because somebody was in LE or Military service or shot competitively, does not by itself qualify them to be a good salesman. I would liken it to when you go to a home improvement store and the guy in the paint department was hired because he used to paint for a living. Most professional painters I've run in to are not great sales people either.

Glad you got your situationsorted out. I agree with everyone else, and I'd avoid shopping there until they showed you they changed their ways. I had a bad experience once back in TX. I'd come into some money and decided to upgrade my arsenal a bit. The shop was dead, I was the only one in there for two hours. After looking at 3-4 handguns and several rifles, I got the response you did. I took the $5,000 I had outta my wallet and told the guy, "This coulda all been spent here, but you blew it." I went to a gunshow a week later and found pretty much everything I wanted and at better prices too.

Great response KYJim....

Yesterday, a buddy and I visited Lotus Gun Shop in Louisville KY. We were looking for a S&W 637 for him and asked to see them. The shop owner and an employee both looked them up to see what they could do price wise but were unable to meet Wolf Supply's deal (also in Louisville and a great guy to do business with.) When we declined...the owner said he just couldn't get that kind of pricing from S&W at his volume level but sincerely thanked us for the opportunity to get us a quote...great customer service...polite..and to the point..no BS. We'll both go back the next time....and try him again...I just can't understand the macho types that think the bully, "I'm a tough guy behind this counter" approach is the secret to sales....gimme a break, eh?

Rodfac PS: I gave both gunshop's names and city on purpose...both are first rate. Rod

Some people just have a lousy sense of humor. If he was being rude it probably wasn't personal which means it'll probably happen again with someone else. If it was me, I'd get in touch with the owner or manager and just let it be known what was said and that you're not sure if it was a joke or not. That way the manager knows and can handle it accordingly, especially if someone else complains. I'd also probably head back in there tomorrow with a bit of a chip on my shoulder too. Not to pick a fight, but ready for one.

PS man, don't let some jerk ruin your fun:)

LOL

I will assume he was being rude and not joking since it seemed to ruffle your feathers a bit. Situations like this are golden opportunities to bust some balls.

Salesman: S**t or get off the pot.

Me: My aren't you the clever one. I see what you did there. You used a quaint colloquialism to hasten my decision to buy a gun from you. Does my decision making process look constipated to you here?

Salesman: ...uh...

Me: Huh? Well does it?

Salesman: I uh....

Me: Do you work on commission here or do you get paid by the hour to come up with this stuff?

Salesman: Uh....commission...

Me: Then shut up and let me see that [whatever you wanted to see] or I'll take my business elsewhere.

This will shut up the posers. If he is a real "tough guy" and starts with more attitude, I would just laugh at his ignorance, thank him for his time while laughing some more and go somewhere else.

The owner apologized and said that he will talk to the person.

He said he probably was trying a sales technique to "close the sale". I told him that I didn't like his sales technique.

Sounds like the owner might have actually encouraged the behavior.

I don't know what happened I wasn't there, but in retail you always have "customers" that think they're the only ones that matter, no matter how busy you are. If it's a "just browsing" with no real intention to purchase, it gets to be wasting someones time that could be helping a customer with a valid interest in buying. If sales person was just overly rude take your money elsewhere. It all depends on "who was being the ass****. ;)

I think the owner expects them to use these sales techniques.

Yanno...I wouldn't have been offended with closings like...

Which gun do you prefer?

Do you like one over another?

Are you ready to buy the gun today?

However, **** or get off the pot, sounds to me like either buy it now or leave. Maybe I am taking that it a little too personally.

I did speak to the owner about it.

In any case I ended up that I am buying a new gun on Wednesday from another source.

I agree with that.

You said its in Westland - is our the place on Wayne road our the one on Webb? The one on Wayne is terrible, unhelpful employees and ridiculous prices. The one on Webb is better, but I have had a few idiotic, rude salespeople there. I don't buy from the rude ones, and if they are all I have to work with I leave. I'm not sure who the owner is there, never bothered to meet them, but I ought to because I've spent enough money there (nowhere near as much as a lot of people I'm sure, but enough). Mostly I like that store, and there really aren't that many in the area to deal with.

Yikes. 6 or 7 minutes... don't think they'd like ME in there...:D

I take my time. It's a big purchase & if something ain't right... guess where ya go? Not back to the shop (unless ya got a REAL good'un). The gun goes to the factory.

As for "Never go back." That's a bit extreme. There IS one local place that got me butthurt by gouging on primers. Never go back? Well, no. They get a lot of good consignment guns. They ARE, however, my LAST stop when looking for supplies & accessories.

He probably just had a bad day, or had a customer like my mom's former husband, who needed to be told to "S*** or get off the pot with ANYTHING he bought that was more than $20. His pondering everything and general cheapskatedness doomed their marriage to failure. I had the misfortune to go TV shopping with him. There were about 5 places to buy TV's within sane driving distance from their place, and he asked if I wanted to go with him. I knew from what my mom told me that this was going to be something horrible to go through, but I went anyway, mostly because if I didn't, she would have to. This was in Early November.

We got to the first place, and there was a TV we both thought had a great pic and it was $500. I didn't expect him to just buy it, but I had no idea how long it would take. We looked at all the other places and he agreed the first TV was the best and the first place had it for the best price. He didn't buy it. I went back home, and my mother would call me and I would ask if he's bought the TV yet. "No, but he went and looked at it again!". This went on week after week, month after month. In April, he finally cracked, and bought it for $500, at the first place!

His shopping for a car was almost as ridiculous. He spent almost 2 years test driving cars, getting price quotes, etc, talking to salespeople, etc. His daughter in law was a car salesperson, and she just told him, "John, when you're ready to buy, call me, until then, don't bother me!", after she had sold him a truck a few years before.

Sounds like she married my cousin or his older brother (My cousin too), he still hasn't paid me for driving (on my dime, over $500, 3-4 years ago) his jeep with half bald tires from San Francisco to Minneapolis in January through a snow storm most of the way, and he went to collage for almost 8 years. But I degrease.:D

No gun salesman has ever had the audacity to say something like that to me, although I have had some apply more subtle rudeness. Their reward? I bought the gun from one of their competitors, and casually let them know about it later. :D
