A safe that isn't bolted down (from the inside of the safe) or the size of two refrigerators is not safe. My office had a save that was all of 250 lbs and about 3-4 ft cube. (It was a long time ago.) Thieves carried it out of our office and across the street to an empty lot where they pried it open at their leisure.
Viet Cong used to hide weapons (wrapped up) in latrines and places no one wanted to search.
Any place you can hide anything, it can be found.
Locks keep honest people out (and the mildly honest). The dishonest, locks just delay them.
Security measures do three things. They discourage the lazy thief. They slow the determined thief. They tell you in the aftermath that an intrusion took place.
That's the bad news. The good news is that insurance is available, thieves are (despite the ability to have bursts of hard work) inherently lazy. Active alarm systems are available.
Your insurance company may have some ideas of security measures and are inherently invested in your security. Local police departments may have a community outreach/education program.
But the most significant contribution to your own security is to invest in your community. Neighborhood watch, a network of your neighbors watching out for one another and making note of any suspicious activity. It is a long-term investment and takes work, but pays more dividends than just home security.
Good luck. Sorry I couldn't bring better news.
