Gun owner in an apartment

Go to one of those bulk super markets, buy an enormous bag of rice, dog food, kitty litter etc.. stick in in a non see through container or bucket and zip lock baggie the guns you don't carry, and stuff them in there. If you have enough say dog food or rice sitting in a big container, they wont notice the weight a couple handguns adds to it when they pick it up, also who is going to dig through, or better yet steal a big bucket of dog food.

I carry my SR9c on me, as long as I'm awake. My PPQ lives in a Stack On pistol safe, inside a nightstand. My CCW joins it there while I sleep.

A few options to consider:
Inside a couch throw pillow.
Modify an ottoman to have a lift up top.
Inside a VHS tape case.
Inside a hollowed out book.

Get creative : )

I was a apartment dweller for years .I stored pistols in my wifes shoe boxes for many years .She would know if someone messed with them.:D

If you're not in the house and don't have your firearm on you, I wouldn't ever leave my firearm just sitting around the house, even if it is hidden. You take a risk of anyone finding it.

I always keep my firearm in a small drawer-size model safe. Here's a link of my personal favorite style ones. They fit in your nightstand and have access by finger pattern security or by numeric security.

I personally keep one similar to this. It's easy to secure when not at home and is small and convenient. Also, all of these safes come with a tether cord where you can wrap it around something that isn't movable, so that way they cant pick up the safe and still take it away.

Put your gun in a freezer bag, stick it in the freezer compartment. Or better yet put your firearm in an empty box of cereal and put it next to the rest of the boxes of cereal. The only way they find out is if they happen to like the cereal that the gun is in.

I think the theme here is that apartment living presents some trade-offs when it comes to security and privacy. You're only legally as secure and private as the lease says you are.

Start by reviewing your lease, then by having a talk with your landlord about exactly what you can expect wrt notice.

Your legal securities mean nothing if you have a criminal element working in/with your apartment management.

In the end, if somebody wants something in your apartment, they will get it... period. A maintenance guy can come case your apartment when you're not home, find all your stuff, and come back in a week or month with the tools to defeat every safe/lock/barrier you've put in place.

Because of this, I'd highly recommend that in addition to deterrence, you concentrate on evidence collection. Get a few motion activated spy-cams.

accountant:

go in your closet and pull up your carpet along the wall. pry up a couple of boards and stick your pistols in there. its not fire safe but no burglar is gonna look under your carpet;) hopefully:eek:

I like a steel gun cabinet for this purpose. Small safe can be easily removed and opened in privacy. A cabinet can be carried away but it's not as unobtrusive. You can also bolt the cabinet to a wall or bolt for instance a long steel bar on it, after it's in a closet. The bar will prevent easy removal from the small enclosed space without cutting the bar or breaking the door frame. You have to assume the location of the valuables will be found

In an apartment that others have access to and so many people are always moving around theft would be a real concern for me. Nobody ever seems to notice when an apartment gets robbed.

Since you are talking about one handgun that is for home defense I would buy a strong handgun safe and make sure it is achored to something solid and or large. Hidden out of sight is also a plus as long as it is accessible quickly if needed in the middle of the night.

Here's mine and when the bed is made it is covered, At night it is right next to my pillow. 7 gauge steel is as solid as you can buy and the pushbutton mechanical lock is as fast and reliable as you can get. See the video clip on the website to see how it opens and presents the holstered gun to you exactly the same way every time.

1) Buy cheap safe and put in closet and keep it empty. Dont even bother bolting it down. Let the thief grab it and run.

2) Find another spot for the gun and valuables. Lock box bolted to the under side of the couch , coffee or kitchen table for example.
