Gun draws attention on the shooting range.

It's better to draw attention for how well you shoot, than for what you are shooting.

It's much better not to draw attention for how badly you might shoot, for that matter.

From what I've seen, most people are noticed for one or the other. I don't often see somebody shooting a hand-cannon that is also getting attention for how well he's shooting it.

Not to say there aren't those out there who could, or those in TFL who could; just that most of the .50AE Desert Eagles, .500S&W X-frames, etc that I see at various ranges are shot by people who obviously have the guns for the "Neat-O" factor, and not for serious shooting.

SURE...
You have some empirical evidence of this?!

Can't have a fun thread in here?
I have some targets in the 'cave of my B'Hawk .30 Carb. 'Spose I could take some pictures... it oughta be enough to mention that I kept the targets.

The other one I mentioned in my post about "getting attention" also has a very recent 300 yard story to go with it, but I don't think that is AT ALL the purpose of this thread, so I won't bother to share it.

But you may go ahead and assume that it was all show and no go. Can't help that. :o

Sorry, that was a little more rude than it certainly needed to be. :o

I just think we can have a fun little thread here without the need for anyone to be concerned about whether or not anyone can shoot any of the guns being discussed well or not.

What a bunch of other folks at random ranges, who are not posting in this thread do with their toys? Seems to be fodder for a whole other discussion.

I know I can shoot mine. :D

I can only use it at the outdoor range, but my Springfield Arms Single Shot in 358 Winchester usually gets everyone's attention.

This ...

I have 2 matching Colt's SAA. Blue, 5 1/2" barrel, custom one piece walnut grips with a white 5 pointed Texas star on each side of the grip. There's nothing like being at a SASS match and have someone walk up and ask, 'Are those REAL Colt's?'
And yes I can shoot'm pretty good. I've also carryed'm at off duty jobs and killed game with'm.

LCR 38 with a 1 7/8 barrel, running 158 g factory 38 non P loads, at a indoor range I had never been to before. Carried concealed but with targets in hand, walked past a sort of pre inner city ganster type and his lady friend, we both nodded as I went by.

Set up target, fired off a few. Guy comments to his friend, " WHAT is he shooting ! ? " He never came to look and left shortly there after.

Went to get more targets / ammo, counter guy commented he can always tell when someone is shooting a snub. ( loud )

Now that I have a LCR 357 I wonder how loud it would be running 357? . . .not that I _want_ to run 357 through such a light ( 17 oz ) gun having tried only _2_ rounds in a SW 340 PD ( 12.5 oz ).

" My wire-folding Glenfield Model 60 gets plenty of attention and more than a few laughs but is still one heck of an accurate gun! "

Ooo, Ooo, tell us more about the folding chrome 50's 60's kitchen table leg! :)

Well this one always got a few remarks.

Usually someone telling me it was illegal.
Also had a 444 barrel for awhile with a big brake on it. One shot and anyone who had come to look at it wouldhigh tail it back to their bench. Collection is pretty boring now.

The super Redhawk in 454 9 1/2 in barrel usually gets a head turn, but the contender in 375 JDJ, or 45/70 backs most off. The Encore in 444 ,or 460 S&W will cleear a lot of space.

My Coonan classic get attention because people are expecting a 45 acp and when they hear it fire they thing it blew up. Then when I keep shooting it it gets a lot of attention.

The gun that gets the most attention is my BFR in 45/70 and 450 Marlin (It has interchangeable cylinders). I think my Coonan is actually louder but the sheer sized of the gun and the bullets really get attention at the range when I pull it out.

One time at the range I was shooting my BFR with 450 marlin ammo and the range officer asked me to either put it away or take it to the rifle range because it was too loud. When I protested they said that it is shooting rifle ammo so it "should" be at the rifle range. SO I put it away and pulled out my Coonan... the range officer smiled until he heard me shoot it.

My old Hakim 8mm with the 30 round magazine and bayonet was a head turner at the range. I had to ask to be on the far right lane to prevent it from hurting anyone with my brass! Folks thought I was being an ass at first even though I very politely asked if I could trade lanes with them or get them to move to the left and let me have that seat until they saw how that devil threw brass! :p That it was very loud with it's built-in muzzle break didn't hurt either!

Gun drawing the most attention at the range

My buddy's mod29 44mag. that had a little timing problem out of the box. He touched off his first round and 4 guys from the slots on either side of him ran for cover while rubbing little chunks of hot lead off the sides of their faces!

The revolver that gets the most attention is, strangely enough, my NAA Pug ... half a dozen people a trip will watch me shoot it, then wander over to try and figure out why they can't see the gun that's making so much noise ... I always let them fire a cylinder and several have said they plan to get one ... nobody much interested in my lovely 686+ or custom-grip j-frame ...

I've got 3 that drew a crowd whenever I fired them. First was my Redhawk as it was scoped, and at the time there weren't a lot of scoped handguns around, so everybody wanted to try a shot. Haven't had it out of the house in many years. Next was my Contender in .45-70, which always blew out the wall furnaces in the indoor range I frequented. Someone would always relight them, but the next shot would again put them out. It caused a lot of raised eyebrows and more than a few to leave early. Nobody ever asked to shoot it. It doesn't get shot anymore. Latest is my PLR-16, which generally stops the entire range. Most comments are akin to what the hell izzat? And everybody wants to try it out.

Of all of these I own, I have only shot 25 rounds thru one gun only. Most folks have never seen one except maybe on TV!

Bruce

Jeez, Bruce, I seriously doubt that most people on a gun range at any given time are even going to recognize one. Probably nearly as many won't even recognize it when you tell them what it is.
