Gun draws attention on the shooting range.

Do you have a gun that gets a reaction from people when they first see it?
I've got a Taurus Raging Bull 44 mag with the long barrel. It's black and has a black scope on it. Frequently when I first take it out of the safe or the range bag people will proclaim the name of a deity. One asked what kind of devil gun it was. Mind you these are all "gun" people. Anyway it's a fun gun shoot and gets a lot of fun reactions when I let others shoot it. The best one was the guy who asked, "Will it hurt?" Fun stuff. Any guns like that in your collection?

Not anymore, but my Contender in 357 Herrett would turn a few heads when I touched it off! It would clear 3-4 shooting positions on either side of me, too!

Some attention-getters

Coonan .357 Magnum semi-auto. For those who notice.

Big bores don't turn a lot of heads in Alaska, but my friend's 500 Smith with a 4" barrel did get some notice when the concussion knocked a couple of feet of snow from the range's cover down on everyone.

There are a couple of shooters down on the rifle end of the firing line with .50 BMG rifles, and then there are the full-auto guys. The last time I was at the range there was one fellow with a WWII German submachine gun. That was nice.

The Ruger Alaskans don't get a lot of attention, but they do tend to clear a space around the shooter.

Another friend had a .30 Carbine Ruger Blackhawk that made a great deal of noise and a truly magnificent fireball. But the king of devastation was his .36 Navy percussion revolver. What a soft lead ball does to a phone book has to be seen to be believed.

Yea but it's not a revolver,it's a Glock 22 that i've modified. It gets lots of looks and starts more conversations than any other guns i own.

Most people just want to know what it is more than anything.

S&W .460PC with a Burris 3x9 EER scope and a bi-pod. I am considerate though, I make sure everyone has hearing protection.

This is a pic of it with the old scope on it. Poor Nikon had the reticle knocked out of it twice.

yes... I have several... 8 shot 22 Hornet revolver, 30 Carbine Blackhawk, 45 colt Montado snubbie, 454 Alaskan, custom 50 A.E. Blackhawk...

but the gun that garners the most attention when shot at public ranges, is not a revolver... my Automag 5 in 50 A.E. gets everyones attention, & everyone wants to try it once

Well, yea, but I think it's because I have a few nice revolvers, not because of flash and bang.

Seems when I start pulling out 27's, 28's, Colt Official Police 38's and so on, somebody will stop by to chat on the next cease fire. Usually some young guy or gal shooting the latest plastic fantastic. Sometimes they're just sort of drooling.

Blue steel and walnut will do that. :D

One of my father's guns has always attracted attention. It's a blue S&W with an 8-3/8" barrel, large target stocks and a 2x Burris scope.

Of course it's only a Model 17 .22 lr., but it's massive and has always drawn attention. It's a heck of a squirrel gun and plinker.

Oddly, for most folks, .... Ruger Blackhawk in 30 cal. carbine. No one notices when I take it out... but when you fire one of these babies off it gets folks attention.

Yep, my .30 Carb B'Hawk often turns heads, but only when you light one off. It doesn't grab attention just by it's looks.

The Contender in .223 gets looks when it lights off also, but that's always on a rifle range. It's pretty loud for a small round and the muzzle is a bit further back by all of us shooters than the typical rifles lined up, so folks want to know what made the noise & blast.

1911 folks tend to glance at my Hardballer Longslide when they see it.

Its a combination ...

... of the pistol and the target and the range.

At 10 yards I frequently put 9 or 10 out of ten inside one of those 3-inch Shoot-N-See type targets.
No big deal by itself.
Buuuut I do it with a Hi-Point 45.

Thats the only shooting I do that ever causes anyone to ask "what kind of pistol is that".

Of course, when I shoot badly, people are always been polite enough to ignore it.

Probably the most attention I ever got with one of my handguns was my 4" .41 Magnum. It has a REALLY special bark when I'm shooting Remington 210 JSP ammo through it.

I got two

When I feel nostalgic, I'll take my LeMatt to the range. Takes me more time to tell folks about it than loading it, and being a cap 'n ball, it takes a while to load it.

The other is my Mateba Unica 6. If you saw someone at the range with one of those, how could you not ask about it?

Being a "gun guy", I welcome questions and comments from others.

My Sharps. If it doesn't garner attention when I take it from the case, someone is sure to wander down the line after I touch it off.

Interestingly, the gun I own that gets the most attention is an FN Browning Model 1922, probably because it's so slender that no other gun looks quite like it. Another factor is that I usually shoot it one-handed, partially because the grip is so small I really don't have any place to put my support hand, partially because I don't really need a support hand in .32ACP. ;)
