I would like to suggest another option. How about a Security Six 2.75 in barrel 357 magnum. This revolver can be carried and is just as strong as a SP101 without the bulk of a GP100.
Good luck,
Howard

I found a Security Six with a "shortish" barrel at J&G Sales in Prescott, AZ at a good price. I was very tempted but after being burned on a used gun by them before I am very wary ordering a used gun sight unseen ever again. These gun gradings seem to be very subjective but the Model 64 they sent me was in very poor shape. In their defense they let me send it back sans shipping charges and told me that if I drive up there next time I can choose my own. They have tons of used guns and it is getting unbearably hot here so I may take them up on their offer.

I picked the 4" GP100 , for all the same reasons you described...... I have short barrel .357's to conceal carry and for that purpose.

Get 'em both.. one at a time as funds appear.

Like my pair. The GP is a Canadian police trade in and the SP101 a DAO with Secret Service stocks.

Here's some food for thought...

Both, in my opinion, are belt guns... Given your intended uses, I'd say go with the GP100 or find a good used S&W Model 66.

The SP101 is smaller, but not small, and has 5 shots. 357 out of these guns is tolerable but not fun.

The GP100 is more versatile, carries 6 rounds and hot 357 mag loads are easy to shoot from this frame size.

Another consideration is the S&W 66, especially a good used one in 3" or 4". Very similar in size to the SP101 but with 6 rounds and its a real classic in terms of weight and balance. The trigger on the 66 is usually much better than a Ruger due to the leaf spring vs the coil spring.
