An option for the GP would be to buy a set of wood grips from Hogue and sand them down to fit her hand. The GP100's grip stud allows for that.

I just put a deposit down on a 4" stainless GP because it was there and I've always wanted one.

She's about the size of your wife and prefers shooting magnum rounds because she believes she's more accurate with them.

Take her out to dinner, you're a lucky man.

I see that you went with the GP, that would have been my choice as well. That revolver is the more versatile offering from Ruger. I ended-up getting both, the picture isn't great but it can be used for sizing/comparison. 4"GP, 2 1/4" SP...

I have a blued 4" GP100, and a stainless 3" SP101. Both great revolvers.

I carry the SP101 regularly, but the GP100 languishes in the safe for the most part.

If I did more woods/trail activity, I'd carry the GP100, but most of my activity takes part in (unfortunately) urban settings, and the SP101 just carries easier, and the 3" barrel clears leather faster.

That's me. Your stated intention of using it for home defense and range would sway me to the GP100. Adjustable sights, longer sighting radius, 6 shots.

Good luck with your decision.

I would like to suggest another option. How about a Security Six 2.75 in barrel 357 magnum. This revolver can be carried and is just as strong as a SP101 without the bulk of a GP100.
Good luck,
Howard

Ruger GP100

Hisdudeness, you won't be sorry with the GP100,.357 mag. I have one with a 4" full lug barrel, and I put Houge wooden combat grips on it,and it really tames felt recoil. I think your wife will also like it.:)

I hope to get both sometime this year but for what you want I'd take the GP-100. The extra size and weight will make it easier to shoot at the range and the extra round won't hurt for a HD gun. Unless it's too big for the wife (which I would think will not be the case - it's not that big) I would not think there would be any benefit to the SP-101 (maybe less cash up front). The SP-101 is more for CC IMO which is what I would use it for.

After shooting the larger-barrelled (4.2") SP101, I voted for the GP100 as far as your situation goes. The GP100 is much more comfortable to shoot! The SP101, is manageable, but it's a noticeable difference!

I own both and my choice would definitely be the GP100 for your stated purposes.

rugersp101 - In your photo, the top strap on your 3" GP100 looks much thinner than on your 4" version. Is there really a difference?

Get the GP now and learn the joys and foibles of DA revolvers on the full sized forty-ounce gun. I suggest the KGP-141, stainless steel, full underbarrel lug model. Easy to clean, takes loads of use and handling well (like all Ruger products!) and has great ergonomics for beginners.

I'm biased but believe no armory complete without a 4" GP100. Later on you can get one of the many SP variants.

I have a gp100 and am VERY pleased with it.you MUST have her shoot them.I HATED shooting the 101. Really can't explain why but it just did NOT feel right.

I also have a new out of the box 1980 Speed Six that is out of this world. Found it on gunbroker. There is a new in box 1980's police service six on there now.

its because the 3" has fixed sights so the topstrap is rounded on the sides. So yes technically its thinner.
