How times have changed. Back in 1952 when I was 15 years old went into the hardware store put down $ 127 and walked out with a Winchester Mdl 70 270 Win. In 1953 got reloading equipment and loaded 100 Gr bullets for unwonted critters ,mostly prairie dogs and 130 Gr bullets to shoot pronghorn, mule deer, and elk . Used the 270 for varmints to 1956 when I got a Sako 222 Rem rifle. Used the 270 to shoot four elk but in 1965 got a Parker Hale 308 Norma Mag rifle for elk hunting. Over the years I have used a number of different varmint and big game cartridge rifles. For a kid a 270 chambered rifle is a fine starter . Back in 1953 when after putting a Weaver K 4 scope on the 270 using 100 Gr bullets shooting in the prone with a forearm rest that 270 put 10 bullets into a one inch target at 100 yards. Had to have some luck to do that. I lived out in the country and measure off 100, 200, and 300 yards. With the 130 Gr bullets set the scope so that the bullets hit six inches low at 300 yards then shot at 100 and 200 yards to see the bullets hitting points. In 1962 put a Redfeild 3-9 X scope on the 270 and sited it in six inches low at 300 yards. Still have the rifle and scope.
