I'm looking for a rifle around $500 im looking to use it for deer and maybe chayote hunting I looked at the remington 700 but by the time I put a new stock on it it's a bit expensive I've also looked at the savage model 11 I'm also looking for a good cartridge that has variety as I don't hand load any ways I'm pretty open on what I want.

+1 for Brian's suggestions.

My next question is why do you have to replace the stock on the M700? If it is the plastIc stock on the SPS or ADL, it is at least as good as the stock on the Savage you've been looking at.

Take a look at the Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 rifles. I feel they are a lot of rifle for the money. Really nice two stage trigger, good stock, and I've yet to hear of one not being a tac driver.

As for cartridge the 243 Winchester is an excellent choice in my opinion.

Arn't the vanguard 2 pushin around $800? Last I checked they were... I saw some savage model 10's for <$400 with scope and the axis is <$300 saw some with a burris scope. Any of the .308 win based cartridges should work for what you want. .243, .308, 7mm-08, .260....

Peet's right, and I own several rifles you've mentioned. My current go-to is a Savage 10 in .308. I've got less than $300.00 tied up in that rifle, excluding the scope.

I've also got an old Remington 700 in .308 with scope that I paid $400.00 for several years ago. The rifle itself is a 1983 model, an ADL, that I found in a pawn shop. It's accounted for one little doe, but it's scheduled to be given to a grandkid in several weeks for Christmas.

Don't discount used rifles. I've bought several over the years that I like plenty. Most of my rifles came off the used rifle rack. Any caliber from .243 to .308 should meet your purposes just fine.

Maybe the range certified or sub-Moa model vanguards were $800 but a plain jane synthetic/matte is around $500-$600 and they take remington 700 bases. The vanguard 2 comes with a sub-Moa guarantee and I believe most sport a 24in barrel. Making a .243 a perfect chambering for one.

Also around the price point your looking at T/C ventures are an awesome deal. Also a Moa guarantee and they all have 5R rifling. They're IMO a highly underrated rifle. I had one in .25/06 and wish I would have never sold it.

"I looked at the remington 700 but by the time I put a new stock on it"
And what was wrong with the factory stock???????????????
Cost and performance considered, the Howa/Wby Vanguard is hard to beat. I'd suggest the 25/06 as an excellent coyote/deer cartridge.

I just bought one of the scoped Remington 700 ADL models for $417 in 243WIN for the same purposes. Nothing wrong with the stock, and at that price it's a best deal of the current crop of $300-$400 economy rifles currently available IMO. I couldn't find a Ruger American for less (by the time I ringed and scoped it) in my area, and I've had and seen problems with weak ejection of fired cases with some of the Savage rifles that turned me off of the Axis.

i guess i figured a used adl would be more expensive i was talking about the cheap houge stock on the model 700 sps and i think im looking for a bit more than a .243 would a 30-06 be to big for coyote i cant see taking shots over 200 yards 100 and under would be most common shots

ive seen Scope package ADL's at wally world on sale for $379 from $429 reg price in calibers from 243, 30/06 and 7mag.

A Savage axis scope package is $320 with free shipping. Add a Boyds laminate stock for $99 and you have a nice start.
Here is the link to the $320 axis.

Id go 7mm~08 .... almost the same stat as a 30/06 but less recoil.

Caliber~~~~ Bullet/grains~~FPS~~~Muzzle Energy~~~Energy at 200 yards

30.06~~~~150~~2910~~~2820~~~1827

7mm-08~~~~140~~2860~~~2542~~~1793
