good .45 semi-auto for home defense

Chambered round in Home defense

Personally the last post about not keeping a loaded glock on the night stand is a bunch of Hooooooeey! . I can see that argument if you keep one in the chamber which is dangerous with any gun. I wont keep a round in the chamber on any semiauto for home defense. Lets see a 1911 next to my head or a glock, really the same difference. I keep a loaded mag in the glock if I need to wake up and grab it, I can chamber a round extremely fast as second nature and blam! blam! blam! problem solved(i have woke up to check noises before and you wont believe how little time it takes to rack the slide as your grabbing the gun and getting out of bed). That way when the phone rings at 3am i wont be answering my chambered pistol. If you want to just grab it and shoot, go with a deliberate trigger pull in a DA revolver.

As far as reliability goes, my Colt 1991A1 is not a notch down from anything ! the others may have more bells & whistles & higher price tag, but the colt shoots everytime you pull the trigger, just like a Kimber or Les Baer.;)

Colt 1991

I have a Colt 1991 also and am quite pleased with it. I bought it in guess when? 1991 Out of fear, as Colt was going into re-org chapter 11 then. I have zero problems with it and it still shoots great! I used for tactical USPSA for 2 years and it probably has 5-8k rounds throught it.

I don't have one (yet) but I think the Glock 21 is in my future for HD.
As well as a 6" Anaconda.

Basically, the best HD gun is the one you REALLY WANT, but can't find a good rational to spend the money on.
"Oh, this'll be GREAT for home defense!"

As for the Glock going off everywhere in the middle of the night, I just don't see it.
You don't pick up a gun with five fingers, even sleep-walking.

If you jump out of bed ready to shoot every time you hear a noise, take up meditation or prayer.

I'm sure most of us have the wherewithall to assess the situation without the trigger finger coming into the picture.

The trouble I have with Glocks is my insecurity about holstering.
Not a problem with HD.
-and I welcome the "reason" to buy one.

Mithirum and youngun; Don't you think my comment about the round in the floor and mirror etc was a little TONGUE IN CHEEK? I've owned three Glock's and I know their manual of arms, how to carry them, how they shoot, how they handle, how accurate they are etc, etc.
It is my opinion and the opinion of some experts that the FINE line of Glock pistols aren't the best choice for a bedside gun, that's all.
Just because somebody says something that bends your ear about a Glock doesn't mean you start rantin' and ravin'. Go ahead, tell me my P-220 is a pos......I could care less. If you're going to foam at the mouth everytime somebody slights a Glock just go over to www.glocktalk.com and you'll be alot happier.

Come on J Parker

Please forgive me, I dont even think I was that animated in my opinion. thanks for the glocktalk offer, but i prefer TFL and a wide range of opinions on more than just glocks. I thought my Hooeey comment was just
Tongue in cheek
as well.
As far Sig P220's I never said any bad on them. check my first post on this subject and see that I mention them as one of the good options. That is actually if you do care. If not no worries :)
This an opinion board after all!

Young Gun:
Dont get the wrong idea about my noise in the night comment, I only do it every other evening because men who wear sunglasses at night with blue sneakers and no laces are out to get me...... Hmmm..... Hold on a second I think I heard something............

<cha-chink>

.................
wheww! i think they ran off, and I didn't have to fire a shot. Forgive me also, I lived in Oakland,CA for 2 years.

Damn, Mithirium, I worked at Oakland airport for eight years before moving to Washington State. When the Nimitz was a parking lot I used to cut through Oakland to get home (scary). No hard feelings..your brother-in-arms..J. Parker

The choices which have the best quality/economic ballance would be the CZ97, Ruger P90, Ruger P97, Taurus PT945, and the Taurus PT145. If you can afford to spend a little extra, you simply cannot beat the H&K USP. I wish I could afford one! :(

Wow! J Parker Congrats on getting out of the bay area. I got out of there last year, moved up to the gold country. Its a lot nicer. No worries on the posts, ist all good fun in the sharing of ideas (Ugh i sound like demonrat :)) Cheers! ..your brother.in.arms

Rural California is great AND great people. I had a cabin in Pollock Pines for a couple of years. That's neat you got out of the big city life. Gotta hit the sack....Best Regards, J. Parker

Unlike Mithirium I *always* keep a round in the chamber at night...

Dont know that I buy the glock being too light of a trigger tho... Maybe for some, I see the point....

Anyhow, I do suggest a nitestand safe that can be manipulated in the dark, but my philosophy on home defense guns is simply this:

It goes boom when I pull the trigger.

No chambering, no safeties, no holsters, no nothin'!

So, although above I recommended an HK USP45, I did put in a match trigger and I did get rid of the safety and go t oa decocker only, and I do leave it chambered, but NOT cocked and locked (kinda hard to do without the safety! :p)

So other guns I would recommend are the extremely fine Sig P220 as per all my previous reasons.

JT

as usual, FWIW, YMMV, IMHO, and all that...

You wake up in a stupper (you know the feeling, half awake, not fully alert) and you grab your Glock with a 51/2lb trigger.
Yep. Know the feeling, and I agree. Doesn't always have to be a Glock either...I'm not always comfortable keeping any numer of action types at close ready.

My usual .45acp is a Colt Commander, soon to be replaced by a Kimber Stainless after the Kimber has a few more rounds through it. 1911's are Ok but tricky. Unless I had one that proved itself by going through a lot of rounds, I'd go a CZ97 or a base mil spec 1911 like Springfield offers.

SIG P220 with tritium sights does it for me.

Much as I like 1911s I would steer you in the direction of a Ruger. Which one? I own a P90 and a P97 and I honestly don't have a strong preference. Buy whichever is cheaper. If it has to be a 1911 style consider the Argentine pistols coming in. What are they? The Systema Colt and the Balister-Molina come to mind. Regards, Richard

For home defense, I would highly recommend either the Glock 30, or the HK USP 45. If you're looking for something under $400 the Taurus PT145 is a great home defense gun too. I recently got one and it had surpassed all my expectations so far. In fact, the Taurus PT145 is my main home defense gun right now.
There are endless opinions on this topic, I hope you find what works best for you.

In my opinion, you can't do much better than a Glock G30. Its small enough, but not too small. I was looking at the G21, and found that it was just too big. They both hold 10 rounds of potent .45 stopping power!

Good luck!

Erick

I'll vote for simplicity in the night. Glock. Size/Model depends on the user's personal taste. I use a G21 w/Heinie Slant 8 night sights.

For home defense there isn't any reason to not go full-sized.

In *no* particular order:

Glock 21 or 30
SigSauer P220
HK USP .45

1911 pistols can be very reliable but Colt, SA and Kimber seem to produce more than their share of flaky ordinance compared to Glock, SigSauer or Hk... and I REALLY like 1911 pistols. If you want the smallest chance of breakage get a S&W 625... trust me, you can reload a moonclip revolver VERY quickly. :D
