Good .22LR pocket pistol for Mom

Beretta Tomcat .32 with the tip-up barrel.
  • I don't trust .22LR ammo. Not that it's too weak, but it has too many misfires even when I buy premium ammo. If you absolutely have to have a .22, use CCI Mini-Mags for it.
  • .25ACP is just too small and fiddly. It's even weaker than .22LR, but that's not the real problem.

I recently picked up a Walther P22. Got 500 rounds of CCI mini mags through it and the only malfunction I have seen is if I slam the magazine in to hard the top round will misfeed (to used to my .45).

Got the .22 because I can find ammo for it and I would rather shoot .22 than not shoot at all.

It shot to the left out of the case. Adjusted the sights and it is accurate enough I wouldn't want to look down the business end at the distances you are going to be defense shooting at.

When my wife first started to carry a gun, she chose a Bersa Firestorm in 22 LR. She had tried a 38 revolver that her chest thumping husband (me) had suggested, and thought it kicked too much and had given up on the idea of a carry gun until she shot a Ruger Single Six. She said "I want something like this."

Her husband, not being a total idiot, went with her, and she picked out the Bersa. She must have put thousands of rounds through that little gun. And I mean that literally. We found out that it really liked CCI mini mags and with them ran like a watch. She got an extra magazine for it, then a CHP, and a carry purse. She carried that gun for a couple of years. She never had to use it for any serious social work, but I'm pretty confident that a swarm of those 40 gr solids would have persuaded most anybody to go look for something else to do.

With that little Bersa she learned how to shoot a gun. She learned how to clean one. She learned how to carry one. She learned when to shoot, and more importantly she learned when NOT to shoot.

Over time, she gained confidence with it, and in herself and in her ability to handle bigger guns. She started to shoot my 9mm's and my 45. One day she said "I need a bigger gun." Now she has a Glock 19 that she picked out herself.

That Bersa still goes to the range with her though. I'm sure she'd get rid of the Glock first if she had to.

By the way. If you can find one, the Bersa Firestorm 22 is a good choice, IMHO.

22

I would have to agree that the Walther p22 would be the best. Not too much recoil and I never really have had any problems with the one I have except maybe when I have put almost 100+ rounds at the range playing and it gets dirty but it still operating. Long as you take care of it and clean regularly the Walther is a decent gun. Just my opinion.

I would go with the Bersa. They are reliable, small enough and less expensive than the others about $250.00. I have one in 380 and it has been the best 380 I ever carried. Get her the Firestorm in 22LR, it looks like a Walther, made like a Beretta and shoots exceptionly well for the price.

I don't think mom wants to shoot anyone, or hit any target at 10 yards in the X ring ... I think perhaps mom just wants to feel secure. I get the idea mom has come to believe she will be secure with a gun in her purse. I'm in the camp of those that think mom gets what mom wants ... get her a .22 lr ... a cute little one. Take her to the range regularly. If at some point mom wants to try something else, be prepared to show her options.

The Walther TPH in .22lr is a pocket pistol I have shot and would recommend. Its expensive like $600, the J frame airweight smiths are all also good. skip the beretta 21, they have issues and the new ones are terrible QC wise.
Use Good quality .22lr ammo Order some Eley match target, White rabbit HV hollow points. lapua Midas or even CCI mini mags. Good Quality .22lr, not Bulk pack hollow points. Expensive target grade .22lr is very reliable and consistent, Wally world bulk pack is not.

A keltec P32, or ruger LCP would be a better choice though.........

Expensive target grade .22lr is very reliable and consistent
Except for the Remington target grade in the yellow square plastic box. That stuff is less reliable than their cheap bulk-pack. (about 10% misfire rate, multiple boxes from different lots used in different guns)

.22lr pocket pistol for Mom?

When you care enough to Send only The Very Best...

Walther PPK/S

Load it with Stinger Solids and let her know to shoot for the eyes.
If you can find any Winchester 42gr Super Silhouette ctgs, try those also.

Maybe you can find an Interarms made Walther TPH, but it is much smaller.

 I got a HP22A it's run as good as any other auto on the range. My
wife and I were shooting 3in barrel 15yds about 4in groups fed reliableno failures & the Guy next to us with his RG MKIII was all over target , not the
gauns fault:D he even asked if we wanted to shoot it, I politely declined. If it was the only gun I had I would carry it!!

Walther TPH (German made) or Walther PPK or PPK/s (German made). Both very reliable and small enough to fit in a pocket holster.

Not as light as some, but exceptional otherwise.

The Walther TPH is a great little pocket gun in both .22lr and .25acp, holds 7 rounds of either. They are a bit expensive though. Very well made, small, light and reliable.

The Iver Johnson TP22(25) and American Arms PX22 are other small pocket guns to consider.

One of my favorites is the Daewoo DP52, a Walther clone in .22lr. Exceptionally well made, accurate and reliable but on the heavy side.

H&R snubby!

I got this one real cheap on Gunbroker. It's a 9 shot DA and handles Supermaximums or Velocitors real well. Keep your eyes open and you can find a very nice one for under $150 online. It's an easy shooting gun and never jams:

For a pocket gun, I'd definitely go with a snubnose revolver in .22LR. Still a wimpy cartridge but a bigger, better gun than any pocketable automatic. That's got to be worth something.

Well I can report that they got a walther 22LR. My dad had almost convinced himself on the Bersa .380. Not a pocket pistol, but he said he like the walther's feel.
