Gen 5 Glocks

I've been carrying a Gen4 at work for a year and a half now. Absolutely hate the finger grooves, no matter what I do, at least one of my fingers ride right on the ridge.

Other than that and the sights which I changed out I really like the gun.

In short I'm pretty much the person the Gen5 was made for, and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one.

GLOCK GEN 5

JJNA No more polygonal barrel?

I think they changed the rifling to standard rifling to cut costs? it's probably cheaper to have them made with standard rifling.

I dont like the rounded front of the slide , I like the classic GLOCK squared front slides

the Gen 5 magazines are the same except for high visibility orange followers similar to MAGPUL

the firing pin on the Gen 5 has a more rounded tip, not sure if it's interchangeable with older models?

beveled mag well is not necessary, just makes the grip more bulky, plus the new mags have an extended base plate that sticks out a little more.

the ambi slide stop is another unnecessary change , when a person could just pull back on the slide, no need to add extra parts, plus both sides of the slide have that notch cut.

I think they went back to the two pin design because it interfered with the Ambi slide release?

The slide on the Gen 5 is a little "wider" than the previous models, maybe they increased the slide weight to improve cycling with the new RSA?

barrels length on the Gen 5 Glock 19 is slightly longer than the previous models (improve accuracy?)

I'll stick with the Gen 3

Ditching the finger grips is the #1 thing IMHO. Lucky for me I managed to find a P-01 Omega this weekend, so goes another generation of glocks I won't have to buy any of.

I got my hands on one yesterday. Didn't shoot it, but I did get to take a look at one that my range has for rent. Felt fine in my hand, but I'm not bothered by the finger grooves on Gen 4. (I probably wouldn't have bought one if I were.) I'm not exactly an engineer (as I think we all know), but one difference that I did spot was that the spring under the slide lock has been changed from a leaf spring to a coil spring.

The flared magwell is kind of nice, and I like the rounded snout, but I won't be trading my Gen 4 in on one.

I think it's funny. Just mention the word Glock, and we get 4 pages of replies. I think Glock already won the game..
Somehow, I have avoided adding one to my collection, and the Gen 5 will not do it for me.

The million aftermarket items is great. I really appreciate that and if I were to ever buy a Glock, that would be the reason.

There are other options today that are equally as fitting of "Perfection" .

Now lets get that cement truck going.........

JJHSN, Would it have proved anything if the gun ran flawlessly during that test?

I'm not the person you asked for comment, but my answer would be no because of a sample size of one. That in itself can lead to conclusions that range from correct to erroneous to ridiculous.

These finger grooves kept me from reaching my full potential with Glocks...

My new Gen 5 Glock will have to be sanded without them.

I fired both the Gen 5 model 17 and 19 today at my local range.....they had a 4 day demo going on as a promotion from Glock - that ended today.

I put 20 rds thru each model....both of them shot well, I don't have much experience with stryker fired guns...just not my personal preference ..( I'm a 1911 guy...full sized 5" guns in 9mm and .45 acp ...and Wilson Combat's guns are my primary guns for carry and range work ).

But like I said ...the new features that some of you pointed out...seemed pretty well done to me...( no finger grooves on front strap, ambi slide release, beveled mag well...)...and the trigger especially on the model 17 seemed better than most of the Glocks I have test fired in the past.

Trigger seemed to me - to have less travel, less creep than previous models...(although it still had a lot of creep compared to my 5" Wilson in 9mm). I probably missed the subtle changes some of you noted.....but if my budget was $ 600 out the door...it seems like a good option to me.

The so-called "test" was and is absurd since any semi-auto handgun you drag through sand, dirt and mud will choke up when you do it without a magazine in the magwell. It is laughably ridiculous and would be just comic relief were it not for a fact that some people actually think the "test" proved anything. I've been enjoying watching the guy who made the video get his butt handed to him, and rightly so, on YouTube.

This might be a dumb question but earlier it was discussed whether:

.the mag angle looks different so now all the other mags we have wont work?

They've stated it's backwards compatible with all mags.
I am assuming the new mags will also work in older guns?

I got to look at and handle one today.

Everything I've seen and read about it, is true. Land and groove barrel, no finger grooves, smooth trigger -- three things I would want to do, I wouldn't need to do with the Gen 5. The ambi slide release is a sheet metal stamping that straddles the inside of the frame, pressure provided by a small coil spring very similar to the one that holds the barrel lock plate now.

This one's a win, I think.

Anyone comment on the cutout on the front strap for the baseplate? I've read a few people found it bothersome but I've shot a Gen 2 and never noticed it.

It didn't bother me when I shot the Gen 5, model 17 and 19, yesterday.

( But I shoot 1911's every week...with a full sized speed chute/mag well on them too).

I have larger hands and CCW a Gen 2 Glock 19. I also tried both G19 and G17 Gen 5 Glocks and never an issue.

I liked shooting both the G19 and G17 and I found the Gen 5 Glock 17 to be a very sweet and soft shooter. If I had the need for a full size SF pistol I would buy one ASAP.

I have not shot a Glock 17 in years and when I did I only put a magazine through it. I shot 30 rounds through Gen 5 Glock 17 with large back strap Monday at 7 yards at 3 inch Shoot-N-C dots at about a round every 1-2 seconds. Being my first 30 rounds through it I was pleased at the results. IMO Glock is going to sell a lot of the Gen 5 Glocks. It sure did not feel like a 2X4 in my hands and actually felt really good. I am interested to see some accuracy tests on the Gen 5 Glocks shot from a rest with a variety of ammo.

Mrgunsngear on YouTube did an accuracy test with it and it did quite well. I'll add the video in a bit if someone doesn't get to it.

His best group was 1.5" at 25 yards using Federal HST from a benchrest, using stock sights and trigger. Personally, I bet he could have done better, but he seemed to be rushing it a bit because he had a storm bearing down on him.

I have handled but not shot one, not worth the range rental and retail ammo to me.
I like the texture, the trigger was poor; my Gen 1 is lighter and smoother.

My question is, where does this effect S&W,Ruger, & Sig?? As I understand, Glock is #1 followed by S&W, third is Ruger. Can anyone really compete with Glock????
I didn't buy my Glocks because they are popular. I bought them for they just about take any ammo & Glocks are basically flawless. As I was told, you can run over Glock with a tank & it will still function properly. For us, it's all about never failing as opposed to beauty.
