Sure. I often carry a Smith model 629 in a chest/bandolier holster when I go hiking around my hometown in Alaska. It's sort of expected; one time I had a nice couple stop and ask me where my gun was when I hadn't donned it yet at a trailhead.
Most people would say "it's for bears", but really I started carrying after my father shot at a pack of wild dogs that came too close. One shot, one kill, and the rest ran away. From a distance we saw them come back about half an hour later.
Bear spray is for bears, big handguns are for wild dogs & dangers that have fewer legs. Once in a while I pack a little Airweight instead, but if you can carry openly with a more supportive holster, there's no real point in short changing yourself.
