For those who think a head shot is a sure thing

As a big game guide I saw many animals taken. The head shot is the most inhumane , unethical shot a hunter can take. I have seen some horrific wounded head shot animals. The brain is a very small target. I shot a wounded deer in the head with a 12 guage slug at 3' away. The deer didnt even blink. So much for knock down power.

Someone here once posted a story about a woman who took a .44 to the head and lived, from close range I believe.

I like the idea of Toe Shot Drills.

:)

I know of Doctor that got shoot in the head with a .357 and it just bounced off, and went through a few walls making big holes, the last hole was 6-8" wide.

About 38

years ago I was working in a hospital when an off duty cop was brought in with a .22 cal wound to the forehead.his assailant didn't know he was a cop-it was a robbery gone bad-the bullet went halfway around his skull and came to a rest behind his ear.It was removed and he went home in the morning with a headache.

She needs to buy a lottery ticket.

Once again, the court order fails to protect anyone...
It doesn't stop a person intent on doing harm to another. I think it does keep some hotheads away who might begin with no intent to harm but then lose control.

Saw a Dr. G episode a couple years ago. A guy died when his 22 revolver went off after falling off an ironing board. The round hit him in the forehead, traveled around his scalp and lodged behind his ear. She was as perplexed as everyone else.
ICP, I do not see how any medical professional could have no idea what this could be.

In general these cases just goto show how amazing the human body is. I have yet to hear of a computer that keeps working with a 22lr through the processor.

Was she blond?
Just kidding...hope she and her loved ones thank the loard for her everyday from here on out.

I have headshot lots of critters that kept on going. Most drop in thier tracks but a very few almost seem unhurt. I guess "If your number aint up you aint gonna go" !

Odd/interesting story. If anything it's a great reason to protect yourself when court orders can't (as mentioned above).

For those who think a head shot is a sure thing

By volume, the brain only occupies something like 30 odd percent of the total volume of the head and with surrounding structures included (skull, for example), you are only up to maybe 40+% and so that leaves more than half the head that is of non-brain or non-brain-related aspects. So of course head shots are not a sure thing. We read about face shots quite frequenty that don't result in death or a stoppage.

As noted above, even if you penetrate the cranial cavity, you still have to get the proper tissue damae to get the proper stop.

I went to a Call where a guy put a 12GA under his chin to commit suicide the shot column stopped just short of the brain & he survived nice try though everything below the brain was wasted.

That's just it. It didn't go through his "processor", it traveled "around his scalp and lodged behind his ear".

armsmaster270,I think I saw your guy on tv being interviewed several weeks after the attempt.

Been at least ten years ago.

He had to cover the open hole that was left of his face with a large towel.

He said(wrote I guess) that he was going back to college and finish his degree!

Uh,why not decide that before you take off your face?

Very chilling description of the damage he did to his whole head.

On the head shot with a handgun thing,we had a guy in Woodbridge at least fifteen years ago that answered his door to a criminal that had had a car break down on I-95.

This criminal went through the woods and knocked on the first townhouse door he found.

When the hapless homeowner answered the door, the criminal had his revolver at forehead height and fired as soon as the homeowner opened the door and walked inside and stole his car.

The bullet hit the homeowner square between the eyes, went under the skin,I guess the homeowner was falling backwards at the time because that bullet went from between his eyes around his skull, over his head and behind it,under the skin and lodged in his back all the way around the other side of where it entered his body.

The homeowner survived without any major injury.

The criminal was later caught .

I saw a show years ago with a guy who did something similar with a shotgun, only it blew out the front of his face and he lived. The show was about suicide. He was extremely messed up looking, but you could understand him fine as he explained his experience. He lost some of his tongue and the center of his face including his nose and sinuses. Contact head shot with a shotgun.

Has anyone here ever heard of Phineas Gage? He got injured by a railroad blasting accident in 1848 and lived about 15 years more. He was able to talk and walk immediately after the accident.

Freak things happen and this woman got very lucky. I'm not a doctor, but I'm sure that an inch to one side or the other would have had very different results.

I certainly don't think that this example should cast doubt on how reliable the .380 may or may not be. I am guessing though that the shooter used ball ammo but would like to know for sure however.

My wife used to be an ER nurse. She had a guy wheeled in who had put a shotgun under his chin. He basically just blew his jaw off. He was still conscious and alert when they brought him in.

Headshots can hurt!

I have a patient with more lives than a cat, apparently. 14 years old, had all his teeth knocked out by 4 guys w/ a baseball bat--still managed to chase them off. 21 y/o, crashed his 280Z at 165 mph--through the windshield, seat and all. Has a steel plate in his head from that one. Survived SEAL training, only to have his irate wife shoot him thru the roof of the mouth with a .22, while he was sleeping! It bounced around inside, took out his left optic nerve and lodged in his skull, opposite the steel plate. 9 days in surgery fixing his face. Great guy with a sunny attitude!
