For those who think a head shot is a sure thing

Just saw this news arcticle. It will probably start a discussion about the inadequacy of the .380 as a defensive round, but I think it should remind us that even a head shot is not a sure thing.

Woman gets shot in forehead by scumbag. Bullet exits back of skull. Woman makes tea while she waits for officials to arrive. Offers them a cup of tea.

She got very lucky that day. I think that a .380 will kill you just as dead as any other round especially with expanding bullets and proper shot placement. She got VERY LUCKY!

Byrd said the bullet apparently passed through the lobes of the woman's brain without causing major damage
Very lucky indeed, the article also said this is very rare. You don't see many gunshot wounds to the head with no lasting damage...most result in death.

This is not the first time I've read/heard of an incident where a HS was not lethal. The skull is thick and most of the time the bullets connect at an unfavourable angle and don't even penetrate. I guess with rifle rounds this is not an issue, but handgun calibers are just not in the same league.

I kept hearing stories about my grandfather saying something to the effect of "unless you hit em' in the brain stem, all bets are off!", althogh the story was more about how much he hated his M1 carbine than biology-based accuracy

It's possible it passed BETWEEN her brain lobes. Wouldn't be the first time. Pretty obviously gave her a concussion as she was described as confused and dazed.

Poor gal. At least she won't have to deal with a certain scumbag ever again.

Sometimes the bullet doesn't have to penetrate to be lethal.

Saw a Dr. G episode a couple years ago. A guy died when his 22 revolver went off after falling off an ironing board. The round hit him in the forehead, traveled around his scalp and lodged behind his ear. She was as perplexed as everyone else.

And what about....

Those people who have had nails, arrows, and even rebar or railroad spikes through (as in, in one side and often out the other) their skulls, and survived?

And yes, rifle rounds have, on very rare occassions, done about the same thing.

Says she made tea, while waiting for the police. Sounds English. If so, that would account for a lot.;)

Byrd said deputies were looking for Sexton's husband, Donald Ray Sexton, earlier in the week to give him a document ordering him to stay away from his wife.

Once again, the court order fails to protect anyone...
At least it's a happy ending.

Maybe a happy ending but her head will whistle on windy days. And she might have to floss her brain each morning.

I'm familiar with a case where the son of a guy I worked with shot himself with a 22 rifle-muzzle in mouth- with same result.

The bullet traveled through the roof of his mouth and exited center top of skull. As I recall, he was in the hospital a day or two. jd

I actually just got done with a case (jury duty) where the POS shot a two year old girl in the top of the head point blank with a FMJ 9mm. It came out her chin, then went thru her chest, and came out her back as well as thru her leg. She then laid there for 14 hours until found (he did shot the mother as well, but she died) rushed to the hospital, and besides the physcoligal trama, and being blind in one eye she is now a somewhat heathy 5 year old.

380, 38, 9mm, 40, 357sig, 45......none of these rounds perform like a 50BMG......now I just have to find a pistol that will shoot the round......

Yers ago i read a story in a magazine at a doctor's house that talked about a guy that committed suicide by puting a gun under his chin, pointing upword, pulled the trigger while setting on a park bench across for his apartment building. He put his hat on ,got up and walked back to his building, walked buy the doorman and to the elevator. Doorman called the cops after see'n all the blood on him and he was died at his door. Shot himself with a 45cal 1911 with hard ball ammo. Took this guy awhile to die but not till he went home with the top of his head missing.
