First AR....need help

Last time I checked the Bushmaster/DMPS both got their parts from Continental.

And the Cerberus/Freedom Group monster does move and consolidate manufacturing. Look at Marlin... And my issues with Cerberus/Freedom Group is that the buy up companies that have a good name (marlin, remington) and start cutting corners in production without passing on the saving to the customers.

No one was saying your Bushy is a bad rifle and no one is trying to change your opinion.

Father Time, my argument is not with you. It is with those who, when asked questions like what is a good AR, will automatically say; stay away from Bushmaster, Olympic Arms, etc but, the S&W M&P15 Sport is a great rifle. That just makes no sense what so ever to me. I don't want to imply that the Smith isn't a decent rifle, but the M&P Sport is not in the same class as a Bushmaster and neither is and Olympic Arms. You can look at the specs and see that. Several of the S&W rifles that use chrome lined bores even still use 4140 Chrome Moly. Sure, it is good enough for the average shooter, no question, and with the 5R 1:8 rifling, they are generally very accurate but, if you could get something for the same money or less, the is higher grade steel and basically all mil-spec such as PSA, wouldn't it make sense to do so? Even if you would likely never shoot the barrel out, why not have one that is least likely to wear out on you if it is the same money or even less?

I'd love to know who you checked with because they both have their own manufacturing facilities. Bushmaster's facility is in Ilion NY and DPMS' facility is in St Cloud Minnesota. DPMS is the second largest manufacturer of AR15 rifles trailing only slightly behind Bushmaster. http://www.dpmsinc.com/about/

There is an impressive amount of ignorance out there when it comes to the S&W Sport. It is an excellent rifle and the ones I've known are sub-MOA accurate. No the barrels aren't chrome lined. HOWEVER, they are melonite treated which provides comparable wear and corrosion resistence with generally better accuracy than chrome. A number of high end ARs are going with melonite barrels. For the money, they are hard to beat.

Basically, you tend to get two extreme opinions on the S&W Sport: 1)People who love them and 2) People who never owned one, but know for a "fact" that they are crap.

Calling them. Asking where they got their parts supplied from. Doing a little research.

99% of AR "manufacaturers" are really just assembly lines. Bushmaster does make their own barrels. (that is why they talk so big about them and are proud of their specs) But they don't forge the blanks for the lowers they drill the holes and slap in the pins and springs. Thats just the way it is. Very few manufactuers actually make their own parts.

Smith and Wesson used to get their parts form Stag but they have changed to more "in house" operations lately. Doesen't mean that they are better rifles because they make more of the rifle themselfs.

I prefer Smith and Wesson for several reasons.

Mil-Spec buffer tubes on the lowers.
Properly staked gas keys. (Both the Bushmasters and the S&W's I have experiance with used AR15 style carriers instead of the M16 style)
MI HP inspected bolts
True 5.56 chambers (many Bushmaster/DPMS rifles have .223 chambers)

I have looked at several S&W AR15 and all of them had these same qualities.
I cannot say the same about Bushmaster or DPMS. Many DPMS rifles didn't have any gas key staking at all, and while the Bushmasters all where staked they generaly did a poor job.

Bushmaster and DPMS both CAN make good rifles. However until the quality control gets better I won't be buying one.
And in addition I won't be giving any of my money to Freedom Group. I don't like what they are doing to the companies they control.

If you don't agree with me thats fine we can agree to disagree.

Built the PSA rifle above for $725 including everything except the AFG and flashlight. It's been 100% reliable and I'd have no issues using it for HD/SD.

Any of the major manufacturers make a rifle that will be suited for your needs, just find the best deal and buy it, for the average person any of them will do...you don't have to buy an over-priced high cost ar to shoot.

Im just gonna chime in here and say a little something. I'm nobody and don't know anything about anything. I just know I had a Rock River, a friend had a Bushmaster, and a guy that hunted on my place had a dpms. These guns had the wheels ran off of them and NEVER saw anything that separated them.

This day and age the big name companies aren't gonna produce junk. So I would say find one in your price range equipped with what you want and go for it. Don't look back!

The roll mark on the side of the gun is of the least importance. What is important is you get the gun to a range and shoot it. See if it has any bugs and work them out. Any manufacturers gun can be made to be very reliable. The shooter needs to learn how to maintain the gun.

Think MEAL

Mags
Extractor
Ammo
Lube

Roll marks are just bragging rights. My Bushmasters are as reliable as my Noveske's, so are the Frankenguns.
