Finally got my License (NYC) -- So many choices!

Pete -
+1 what you said about getting the permit...as long as you're clean, it's just a matter of time and plopping down the $500 bucks. It took a friend of mine 9 months to get his so at only 4 1/2 months, it felt like a fast track :) But I was also on top of things and made sure everything was in order so I wouldn't have to repeat any steps. It wasn't too cruel of a process. The investigator assigned to me was very cool, helpful, etc. At no point did I feel like they were discouraging me or made it seem like a PITA.

Second, I'll send you a PM to get info about your club. I'm in Manhattan, but happy to take the hop over to Brooklyn. I was at The Firing Line in Pearl River yesterday to test out some guns. The closest to me is probably going to be West Side Pistol though.

Third, clearly someone didn't explain the workings of the 92FS to me or I would've understood its decocking system. I'll hit the range today/tomorrow again and give it another shot.

Finally, you asked what I plan on doing with the gun. It's really just for target shooting. I live in the Upper East Sdie of Manhattan w/ 24/7 doorman so I'm not worried about someone breaking in. BUT, I do have a family so it's always good to know I have that protection if/when.....I also have two over/unders and I love to shoot skeet/trap/sporting during the warmer months but it's way too cold for me to get out there during the winter so I figured pistol shooting would keep me sharp, have a new hobby, meet some more shooters, etc. And I'm a guy...what guy doesn't like guns?

All good choices. From the list, It's Sig, 1911, or HK would be the top 3.
You might want to try a Walther P99 SA/DA 9mm, HK P30 or P30S 9mm.

For primarily target/range pistol, how about (S&W, STI, Kimber) 1911 9mm?

My LGS has a p226 Platinum Elite w/ my name on it. Now if I can only get my friends to stop asking me if it comes with pink grips.

Really? Is it too much bling?

I always wanted a SIG P226, but when I got hold of one, I found it doesn't fit me well. If it feels great to you, especially if it feels better than the others on your list, I seriously doubt you'll be anything but pleased with one.

I find the safety on the 92FS to a little high, being slide mounted and all. The Taurus PT92/PT99 frame mounted safety feels real nice to me.

I was at The Firing Line in Pearl River yesterday to test out some guns.

I live right around the corner from the Firing Line and you're more than welcome to try out my 92FS and 96F (or anything else I have)before you buy one.

Appreciate the offer! I was at the range after work today to fire the 226, Glock and 92FS and I think I'm gonna go with the 226. I'm pretty confident I'll be starting a collection though, so this is just the first round. :D

hmm.

Trap? I make the trip down to the Staten Island Sportsman's Club once a week on Wednesday afternoon, weather permitting (which it hasn't been for the last few weeks).

Trap

I looked into that place but just haven't made it out yet. I'm actually supposed to head up to Orvis in two weeks, unless this weather persists.

Take a look @ the P-229 E2, it "feels" a little bigger than your standard P229 but it still has that lighter than a 226 weight to it.

Thanks Patriot - I ended up going with the P226. I just felt that for my first gun, a full size felt right. When I'm on to round two, i'll go compact and larger calibre.

Of course now, I really need to work on technique. I'm doing the natural rookie pattern, low and left (I'm right-handed, naturally).

Orvis

Sandanonna? I've done their wingshooting school. That facility is a class operation. Enjoy.
Staten Island is worth the trip. Some very good shooters and a well run operation. Way closer than Orvis but Trap only.

It is hard to believe the differences in laws around our country. I used to live in NY and remember those restrictive laws. Unless you have a lot of experience with your choices, I would suggest you try out your picks and see what works best for you. I guess in this case, compactness is not really an issue. Go with a Glock 21 (.45 cal) if it fits your hands. I am partial to Glocks but you opinion may vary.

All those are good, or you could move to Arizona, be able to afford all of them AND be able to carry them Sorry to hear about where you live
From post #14

No need tro be sorry. We all get what we deserve.

NYC esp-considering they kill 42% of there new population every year..

Huh?

Off the topic from Shef's questions about handgun choices but

NYC esp-considering they kill 42% of there new population every year..
Care to explain that?
Arizona? Beautiful country, no doubt.
Actually, NYC is not even on the list of the top 25 "most dangerous cities" in the USA........ but Tucson and Phoenix/Mesa/Scotsdale are.
