Feeling "gun poor"...long term buying slump

That's what I was going to say.

My budget says I can afford a new gun, or ammo to shoot my old guns.

Ammo always wins out.

I would be at the range today but we have over 12" of snow in our yard and a good 8" packed on the roads.

You know, you can get a pretty decent snowmobile for $2500-3000. Tons of fun (almost as good as a motorcycle, plus they have heated grips/throttle/brake levers) and that will take your mind off your poor neglected safe for a while. Fuel and carbides/studs will eat up your budget just like ammo will...and you won't mind a bit. :)

Damn, I miss snow...and sleddin'.

We walked up to Blockbuster to rent some movies and people were riding snowmobiles down the main road.

PS: Still in the PNW here. This is not the norm weather wise.

hey gbinga just a tip if ya want a good ammo for that 336 the
remington 200gr rn will most likely be very accurate and devastating on game up to some BIG animals, if your gun is .35rem that is.ive got one and thats what i usually hunt with and gonna reload it soon so ill let ya know on that if your a loader and want a plinking round.

I am starting to feel very "gun poor."
Very much so. The money that used to be set aside for shooting has lately been spent on boring things like gas, food, bills... I'm still pretty well equipped and have a decent ammo stock, but it's been a long time since I had a new toy.

Then again, Mr PBP, I'm aware of the magnitude of your collection and you're going to get little sympathy from me! :D

I noticed at the latest gunshow here in my neck of the woods in VA that many senior citizen folks are liquidating their collections...perhaps to supplement their incomes? I actually saw half a dozen Sig P210's and more captured Lugers for sale in one place than I have seen up until that day.

PBP

WV? Is that above the arctic circle? Somewhere near The Interior - Alaska?

No salt on the roads. What roads? Maybe those couple of miles in a village. And you don't need salt when the sun does not shine, and it never gets above freezing for months on end. (A nice benefit of sub-zero temps, snow does not turn into ice very easily.) It has been above freezing twice since roughly the beginning of October where I live.

Maybe try the Iditarod or the Irondog out, if the gun blahs have got you that bad. 1,000+ or 2,000+ miles for 8+ days running through The Interior could help to clarify your focus!

In all fairness, I have been in Portland when it snowed a couple of inches; pretty much crippled the city, or at the minimum was a great boost to the auto body shops!

Good Luck with the gun blahs, still a few out there that I have not seen in your pictures!

You could be getting layed off like myself and a couple hundred other people I work with... so, nah... no sympathy from me either. Like someone else said, dig out one of your first guns and get reaquainted!

a hair out of place in the handgun forum, but...

Settle in and let me tell you a true Christmas story of gun misery....

Once upon a time, there was a man who finally got off his butt and got with the Civilian Marksmanship Program. He sold off a nearly new AR-15 and sent the money to a place called "Anniston." There, the elves picked him out a 1.1-million serial number Jan. 1943 M1 Garand.
With the warm August weather and the election many moons away, the elves quickly sent him his rifle. Like the first free taste of crack offered by the street merchant, this magical rifle set in this man an evil addiction.

Later in the year, this man's addiction broke him. A few days after the election, like a gillion other freaks, the monkey on his back began screaming for a high-capacity weapon. He again turned to the elves at the CMP.

"Orders ship in 30 days from date of receipt" the elves told him. He quickly filled out the form for an Inland M1 Carbine made in the very town he had recently moved from. He bought books about the little gun and read them. He even ordered many magazines, vintage and modern.

Just before Thanksgiving, the elves sent him a letter telling him they had gotten his order. "Orders ship 30 days from date of receipt," they said, noting that his order had been received on Nov. 10.

Dec. 10 came and went and still the elves in the shipment processing department at the CMP had not touched his order form. Dec. 20 came and went and still the elves had not touched his order form. Dec. 23 CAME and WENT and the elves decided they were going to go on vacation.

The man still has $700 tied up in a dream.

So, we're looking at twice the wait. Oh well. They are sending out really nice rearsenaled low-number Inlands these days. I am still supposed to be getting a daughter for Christmas (though the wait is also supposed to be extended on that end, too).

This year, I went through many weapons. I seriously lightened my handgun collection and I'm mostly happy with what I'm left with. I see a 1917 Enfield, a SMLE, and/or a big-bore revolver in 2009, maybe a 1918 Colt repro if I am successful. Merry Christmas.

I've noticed my acquisitions have come in waves -- I once went a few years w/o a single addition but then I've had years where I've picked up ALOT...I mean ALOT! I remember one year I though I was gonna get scurvy because I wasn't eating from being poor money wise but rich in acquisitions

PBP, I know how it is to walk through a gunshop and go; got one, got one, had one, don't want one, had one, got one......... Heck, I can do that through everyplace but the bow and reloading sections.

What's worse is that I also fish, have 3 boats and can do the same in a marine or tackle shop. Just had to buy a new GPS today, IT WAS ON SALE!

Just had to buy a new GPS today, IT WAS ON SALE!
My other love was always cell phones. I could always count on myself finding a new cell phone every 6 weeks to buy...but now that I have bought an iPhone I do not even do that anymore since nothing new every out does the iPhone.

It is kind of like that with guns now too. Everything I see I can either convince myself I already have one like it or better than it. :(

...laying low until the HUGE after-Christmas sales start! However, that may not affect guns much, what with the new POTUS coming in and sales skyrocketing...

Plus, I have my first product launch on January 1, including my first ebook published under my own name (been ghostwriting for years for others--books, ebooks and more), so if it really takes off, I'll be hitting the shows! (Tell your wife or girlfriend to look for "Busy Sexy Body").

I feel for PBP. I too have a nice collection of firearms but also feel the need to buy something. My tastes trend towards the old and outdated, so there's always something to buy, but cash is definitely limited right now. But that Kahr P380 is tempting me... And one of those black rifles in 5.45 ...

I do admit however that I have been investing in reloading gear, 1000 cast .45 (for Long Colt) and 1000 cast .44 (for S&W Special) as well as a load of powder and primers.

PBP, have you thought about investing in a NICE pellet or airsoft pistol? It allows you to practice inside in this inclement weather. There are ones you can get that weight the same as the associated pistol so you can get the same feel.

I might do one or two pistols in '09 but it won't be a big gun buying year for me. Of course I'm not the collector that you are. All of mine have to fill a functional niche and the only holes left in my collection of handguns are a 4" compact 45acp and a 7" 44mag and the 44 isn't a priority. Instead I'll be concentrating on saving for a couple of uppers for my EBRs.

curse

I gotta a personal rule I'm working on bending; one gun at a time on lay-a-way. Its a CBOB currently and the dealer got two Valors in. I may put one of those Valors in the back room. I've shot my brother's CBOB and I'm real curious about the Valor; purportedly their "flagship"......forged frame and all. I'd really like to see a PBP report on the "CBOB vs Valor" like the one you did on the CBOB vs Colt!.....know anyone with a Valor PBP?
