Favorite Military Surplus Rifle

My favorite (and always will be) is the T-99 Arisaka my dad brought home in '45.

The most fun to shoot is my M1 Garand. On second thought, that might be my son's M1 Carbine. :)

They're all good.

That's why I hate Garands...
I am left handed and most of the 8x bang means a spent case on my face and the ping it hurts!

:eek::eek:

I have two SKS rifles. I absolutely love them. They are accurate enough to shoot wild boar with at distances up to 100 yards. I got both of mine in the past 4 months, roughly $300 USD each...and both were in pristine unfired condition when I got them. Can't beat that price.

My next rifle will be the Mosin Nagant. I hear they are pretty sweet, and at $60-$100, you can't beat that price for a 7.62x54 rifle, especially one as historically significant as that one.

Let's see;
M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
M1903A3 Springfield
M1917 Eddystone
and
M41B (M96 Swedish Mauser w/Ajack Scope) - a very fine, acurate, easy recoiling weapon.

Above in no particular order .... :eek:

I started shooting a buddy's Garand back in 1951, and then went through Basic with one in 1954. Always have liked the Garand. Finally bought one in 1981. Some Match parts; glass-bedded; shoots good.

I also like my father's M1 Carbine "bring back". Not as much fun as the M2 that Uncle Sugar issued me in Korea, but it'll do. Fun lttle critter.

SKS and Mosin just for the fact that you can get them for 50 to 100 dollars depending on where you look. I think they are great plinkers as well.

Every body should own a Garand and M-14 or M1A just on principle.

I have
a couple of Type 99 7.7mm Arisakas, a couple SMLEs, (WWI & WWII versions - I always get the No. & marks mixed up:D), 1917 Swede Mauser, WWII Kar 98k, WWII VZ 24, a Yugo M48, A Moisin Nagant 91/30, & M38 carbine, SVT 40 Tokarev, 1903 Springfield, 1917 Enfield, M1 garand, M1 carbine, M1A (M14 semi), and a few others I can't recall right now.

No SKS, No AK, NO AR.

My personal favorite for shooting is the M1A. I just like it best. The SVT is also a lot of fun to shoot.

I don't like Mosin Nagants (mainly the safety)
Not so sure if you mean the actual safety or weather or not the gun is safe to shoot. I will agree if you mean the first point since I do find the safety mechanism is hard and strange to operate. As for the overall safety of the gun itself it is probably just as safe as any other surplus rifle. As for my favorite surplus gun I too will have to go with the M1 Garand.

I have never had an issue with the safeties on the mosin nagant. Just takes a little bit of strength. All of mine work good.

"...enamored by military surplus rifles of late..." They're like that. Becomes more about the rifle than the cartridge.
Partial to the M1 Carbine and M1 Rifle though. There's something about an M1 Rifle that no other battle rifle has. Shot all kinds of 'em and not one comes close to an M1 Rifle.
Mind you, if I had to fight and got a choice, it'd be a Carbine. Unless I got PO'd and wanted to make a clean, shot. That'd be my 1903A4.
"...most of the 8x bang means a spent case on my face..." Your/that rifle isn't working properly. Ejection should not be into the shooter's face. Lube it correctly or change the extractor/ejector. Most likely a lube issue. Been shooting everything, including M1 Rifles, left for eons. Never once had an empty in the face. Did have a clip that ejected straight up and back down once though. gung ho:

Although the Garand might be my American favorite, the Enfield #5 "Jungle Carbine" is just as good (in my opinion) because of the combination of lighter weight, easier handling yet still has a powerful round.

My Enfield #4s are just as fun, and Prvi Partizan cases can be reloaded several times.
:)Three #4s, pair of #5s.

Just now saw that Tikirocker beat me to it (again).
He must have four computers, always scanning for global LE topics!
The well-known Memphis gun store now has a very nice LE #4 Mk. 1/3: $700! What is a 1/3?
