Favorite gun?

Defense- Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle
Hunting- Sporterized Swedish Mauser 6.5x55
Target- Sporterized Mauser 98 .280 Rem

I can't pick just one gun, each one serves a different purpose for me and I buy them for specific purposes. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

My favorite gun is my Para-ordanance p12.45. Its not the one i carry the most, or even shoot the most. I just like it the most. I like .45's I like high capacity, I like concealable. My P12.45 does all that. I also like lite weight, which it doesnt do well, so i have a p238 for that. I like all of my guns but my para ordanance is my unicorn!

My favorite guns to shoot would be my .22lr's, you just cant beat them:)

If I had to pick just one it would have to be my Rem. 870 12ga.
It's not that I have anything against rifles, I just think the 870 gives you more versatility than any single rifle.

Side note: Regarding home defense, the sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round in the dark is IMO downright scary and can be a profound psychological deterrent to burglars, home invaders, and other vermin.
Of course, If that doesn't work to eliminate the threat, a magnum load of #4 buckshot will.

Favs

Favorites.
There are too many different appications for me to have a single favorite firearm. After all, those different purposes are why I bought the different guns in the first place.
Target rifles: smallbore - Anschutz 1827. High Power - Colt match target AR15
Hunting: Rizzini 90L Express
Home defense is pistol territory.
Trap - Browning BT99
Upland - Winchester M.59

Jhgreasemonkey put it well
" For a multi use I like the lever action rifles in .30-30 like the Winchester 94 or Marlin 336. You can do most things with these rifles that you would actualy need to do plus they are simple, compact and handy and don't look too agressive."

I think the OP's post--if I read it correctly (probably didn't :) ) is pretty simple. what's your one go-to "do all"? (ok,...if you could only have one?). A lot of folks are posting multiple guns, handguns, bolt hunting rifles etc. Fine, but not sure the latter two do great double duty as SD/HD. A handy carbine --ideally in a caliber starting at least with .270 (6.8)--for that hunting duty--would seem to do that better (you notice I didn't say long rangehunting as well). I grant that neither would a .30-30 be mychoice for SD walking down Main St. Friday night, but I'm sticking to rifles here as that's where this thread landed. So, by SD for this thread I'm assuming HD or at ost "trail." Take out any serious hunting intent and I'll say GI .30 Carbine. Ah oh, here I go against my own rules!

Picher,
Whats your favorite SHTF weapon?

Well, I guess its a toss up between a supercarrier and a squadron of F-22 Raptors at the moment.

Actually, I don't feel the need for investing in war weapons here. Really folks, if the SHI_ hasn't hit the fan, after many years of living under the threat of nuclear war, motocycle gangs, drug wars, and other stuff, it probably won't happen in my lifetime. Why worry about it?

I have enough guns and have the ability to use them to be a formidable force in minor civil altercations, but I refuse to become paranoid about zombies attacking rural Maine in force. There are more hunting rifles and shotguns per square mile here than weapons in most war zones, and people know how to use them. Everyone watches everyone else's properties too.

That's easy for me -

I see I left out the main reason this is my favorite - other than it's truly the most superb gun I own in looks, accuracy, and smooth action and balance - my wife gave it to me for our 25th anniversary seven years ago - so it's really special.

Well, OK - so I did "help" her find it - she was trying her hardest to find something I'd really like - so I obliged - we husbands are obligated to help our wives any way we can. It was apparently in an estate and they just wanted to clear things up quickly - it was "NIB, unfired, with manual". Miroku made some 8000 in 1995 - half in this Hi Grade. You wouldn't believe the price I got but it was less than the original listing.

All she got was a little pear shaped diamond ring she had wanted for years - and - would you believe it - still thinks she got the best of the deal. Women - gotta love'em - and she makes it easy.

Keltec sub 2000

I cast/reload 9mm so its nice to have a rifle that I can shoot at rimfire prices.

Its also fun to modify.

@OJ

That really is awesome man! You are a lucky guy for sure, and that definitely is a beautiful gun.

Oh, OK.

OK....so.....one rifle to "do it all".....("home defense, target shooting or whatever...)
Well, it isn't any of the rifles I mentioned in my earlier post. I will go with a lever gun also - a Rossi Carbine in .357 magnum. I was tempted by the M1 Carbine but ammo availability makes the .357/.38 more versatile.
But this is a poor compromise since each of the applications above, HD, etc., uses a different tool. In fact, I shoot the little Rossi less than any of the guns that I mentioned previously. But...I have left it near the bed at night for HD, I have used it for target shooting many times, I do plan on using it for close range deer hunting. I can't say all of those things about any other gun except for a .44 magnum SBH.

+1. Nice to read that and know that other folk feel the same as I do about the SHTF scenarios.

SHTF scenarios are sometimes fun to think about just because you get to play the hero in your mind, but the reality is that there are far more important things to have if the S ever really does HTF than a perfect gun.

I think water filtration and enough food would be priority, also living in an area that is sparsely populated or able to get to such an area would be key. The knowledge and means to perform some medical procedures (mending broken bones, stitches ect.)and administer some medicine would also be a priority. Having good relations with any neighbors wouldn't hurt either, having a little band of single-minded people who are helping each other survive would be better than going it alone in my opinion.

Anyway, if I needed to pick a one-rifle-to-do-it-all I would still be picking my Ruger no.1 in .243 winchester. It is a single shot so it isn't a good self-defense rifle, but it is the rifle that I like the best and that I shoot the best, and I can see hunting being a bigger priority over self defense when choosing a rifle in my situation. The .243 is an excellent round and I have a good reloading setup for it. The gun is a good carry gun as it is not too heavy and is relatively short and handy. I would never go with just one gun though, I would also carry a handgun strapped to my belt with the rifle and then I would have a capable self-defense gun too.

LIKE A AR-15 purdy good in 556,Siaga 308 aint bad either. But for fooling around in the woods like my 7600 pump in 270 & Ruger MK ii 25-06 these are the meat getters. So I guess I dont have a favorite I favor them all in someway:D
