Family Members and Firearms

Is this such an extreme view?

I would think any animal on your property that doesn't belong to you is fair game. Especially if it's aggressive.

BTW, my wife was never exposed to guns until I bought one fours ago. Now she carries a 38 all the time and enjoys shooting just about anything. She cringes every time I buy another one however. I guess it's a money thing. I think I have sixteen now and have no intention of stopping. Guns are just too much fun!

My wife has no problems with guns, but loves animals. Still, in the situation that the OP describes, I'm sure that she'd be among the first to say that if an animal displays the attitude that the OP described, and threatened any human being with that type of aggression, that person should be allowed to defend him/herself by any means available, even if it meant using a healthy dose of napalm.

I hate to see animals abused or mistreated. But, I won't draw a line at any form of effective deterrent at my disposal, lethal or otherwise, if they threaten myself or any member of my family. I see no alternative to this mindset.

Frankly, I'd be insulted and demoralized should my wife tell me that my life and safety are worth less than injuring an animal who wished to rip my throat out and leave me lying dead in my own yard.

Is this such an extreme view?

Nope. If it barks and snarls at me in my own yard and won't back off PDQ, it's going to be an ex-dog in very short order. If other people choose to take chances with dog bites, that's up to them. Not me.

My wife and her family were extremely anti gun. I had to keep explaining and justifying my passion for firearms to them.

One day i took my wife and went off to the range. It took her all of a few seconds with my suppressed Ruger 22 and now she is so pro gun, she is actually encouraging her family and friends to join us at the range. The problem is the she hogs the guns and ammo lol. Im not complaining.

It does help that my sisters have been shooting for all their lives so she felt comfortable among the girls.

I honestly cannot imagine anyone not absolutely loving firing a 22 pistol. Its just not possible.

she thought it would be savage and barbaric to harm any animal, even one that is trying to attack me on my property.

Let that dog in the house next time, and see if she changes her mind.

(Let that dog in the house next time, and see if she changes her mind. )

Ha ha.I bet that would do the trick...:D

Are you sure this women loves you? do you have a big ins policy?. Just kidding. It seems weird she would rather have you all tore up rather than a dog dead..HMMMMMM

The problem I see here is listening to a female - usually unwise.....

I'm with you on that one. Lol

thankfully i'm still single; when I get married i'll be damned sure the wifey is ok with me having guns (same goes for riding motorcycles or other hobbies for that matter).
But i think my immediate family would not approve of me owning firearms, which is not a problem since I don't live with them.

As far as unattended/wild animals coming on to my property, I have no problem shooting them if they become a problem..

Anti-gun???? You won't be involved with any part of my life.

My wife is cool. she really likes her 60 Pro and High Standard M103 .22 :D

Thank God for my weapons friendly wife, she just recently claimed a Mini 14 I bought from a neighbor, she also claims a Ruger MK II as her's as well. If a bad dog is not taken care of by you it probably will nail someone else and yes I do wonder how the wife would feel if the dog had attacked her?

At first my wife (to be) was downright frightened of firearms. But as I began to teach her more and more about them, how they work, how a bullet works etc she came clean and admitted she felt "safer" with firearms in the house. Especially when I am off on business and the like.

You find me one woman in the world who says she would feel safer in her home ALONE for an extended period of time without a gun than with one I will show you someone who is either a liar or has never held a gun in their life.

very good point Patriot

my wife tells me to leave the gun when I go to bed(she has been staying downstairs more since the infant got here and this one is restless // I leave one weapon for her), and she has stated exactly what you have said. The thought never occured to me, but she leaves a firearm on the nightstand when I work late, etc. She doesn't want it in the electronic safe, as I'll always mention the firearm so I know whats going on with her. It makes her feel more comfortable. Women respect what a home defense firearm is for or I should say at least mine does and Patriot's post is pretty much spot on with my wife.

I am confused by hoplophobes in general and your wife in particular! She is against 'savagery' to animals but it is ok for you to get rendered by one of these wild dogs? That doesn't make much sense unless she has large insurance policies on you that you're unaware of.

As other posters have stated, they have similar or opposing problems and find a solution. My wife was never near a firearm until we dated. Now she has her own and knows about proper and safe use and enjoys shooting. That said, I don't believe she could take a life unless hers was in danger. She dislikes my hunting and won't prepare game meats and that is my hurdle to overcome.

Best of luck to you and I would at least carry one of these with me:

Something isn't adding up here. Do you and your wife live at the same place? Do the dogs not bother her when she comes and goes? If she doesn't have a problem with these dogs I'm wondering why you do.

Try pepper spray or ammonia first as has already been suggested. Maybe demonstrating your dominance will change their behavior.

My wife doesn't want anything to do with guns but she doesn't mind if I enjoy them.
