Ever have a dud centerfire factory ammo round

I've had a few light primer hits especially in a 1911 with a lightened hammer strut spring. Convinced me right quick not to experiment with these in a 1911 or any other defense gun. Nothings perfect, and who knows what has happened to primers you pickup at a gun show. I prefer nowadays to buy my primers at a local shop that always has a fresh supply that is stored properly.

I wouldn't be shocked if I have fired close to half a million rounds. I used to fire at least 500-1000 a week when I was competing for years. I still shoot quite a bit, but cost and the supply shortage has sure put the brakes on. To think of how few duds I have had is a testament to the Q/C of most quality ammo and primers. I never have used wolf, Chinese or eastern block ammo because I have heard of failures from some of this stuff.

dud rounds

The only rounds that didn't go boom when the trigger was pulled were manufactured by Seller & Belliot in 300 WinMag. I've been loading well
over 30 years and have never had a rifle shell not fire. I did try loading
some shotgun shells with 50 cal powder once ( during my stupid years )
Lets just say this.......if the "load" isn't in one of my reloading manuals.....
I don't try it anymore. Good luck to all you fellow shooters.

Only one, Remington-UMC .38Spl 130gr FMJ. Didn't fire on the first or second try, despite what appeared to be good solid primer strikes.

I have had four fail to fire with .40 S&W, threee were Wolf two of wich fired on a second strike and the fourth a Speer Lawman which also fired on the second strike.

I've had rounds that didn't go off or only did after a couple more primer strikes. But I've never had a round that had no or too few powder in it.

Yes, once or twice. I've also had more than a few primers that failed to ignite on the first strike but then went off no problem on a restrike.

I've also had a few rimfire duds, but, who hasn't?

I've also had the opposite problem. Recently I fired some .45 ACP by Aguila in my S & W 625 that was clearly overloaded. Each discharge produced a tremendous flash and a felt recoil that was about 2x normal. The spent cases all bulged and I couldn't extract them until I tapped on the end of the extractor rod with a mallet. I'm left with 94 rounds of the stuff that I'm convinced is unshootable. I'm sure not going to fire it.

Had at least 10 in a box of 500 Reminton Thunderbolt 22 lr. Not the fault of the pistol since no other FTF have occured with other brands.

willr

Had several that took a couple of hammer strikes to fire. PMC some of them (Korean), and a couple of Hornady 110 gr. +Ps in my 638, which has fired everything else fine.

Had the scariest one recently, a squib with the Herter's .380 now being marketed by Cabela's. Indonesian. Didn't realize what had happened and attempted to chamber another round in the LCP. Wouldn't go into battery.

I am thankful that the bullet only made it a short ways down the barrel so the next round couldn't chamber, or I could have blown up the gun in my face.

For ever more, whenever I get ANY misfire, I will stop, unload, and LOOK DOWN THE BARREL.

All the time.... a bunch more in .22 rimifire but I have had a bunch of rounds do that. Especially the surplus stuff and i've only been shooting for 5 years : ) I guess I shoot a lot of crap? haha...I haven't had one with my reloaded casings though the remington 7 1/2 primers work well...

Up until last year or the one before that, I never even had rimfire failures. I had bought thousands of rimfires over the years and just didn't need any until a couple years ago, and then I was introduced to bulk. Federal 550s in the brown box suck here. About a 20% failure rate for me. So far, nothing else is that bad, though I hear new Remington Thunderbolts are the same. Strange, but they weren't just 10 short years ago, because I used them a lot and just ran out of them a year or 2 ago.

More Than Once

I just recently had a Federal 38 Super round with a bad primer.I cycled it twice to be sure.I never had a failure to fire with any other round in that firearm, and the rest of the box was ok.It happens.
I also had a 380 round made by MFS(Hungarian) do the same thing in a Mauser HSc.

I bought a brick of .22 Remington Thunderbolt at a gunshow and had about 20% failure rate. I even turned them a couple times to re-strike on a different spot. One Wolf 7.62x39 that could have been a disaster. I had earmuffs on and believe only the primer went off, I didn't hear anything. It was a bolt action and I saw the empty case roll across the table. The bullet was stuck about two inches in front of the chamber. A few Remington centerfires over the years, but I still use them, I think overall they load the best ammo. Years back I used to buy reloaded ammo at gunshows from ammo dealers. With all the problems I had, I would advise against it.

two. both were remington UMC but several years and several thousand rounds apart. pretty good track record for practice ammo.

I'd love to know who makes Remington's 22 ammo. Like others mention, their other ammo is fine, but the 22 rimfire is bottom of the barrel in my experience.

A couple of weeks ago at the range I was shooting next to a guy who had borrowed a friends almost new Jericho 9mm.
He stopped shooting due to a jam. We couldn't eject a spent case and on inspection it had 2 bullets in the barrel and the half a case stuck in the chamber.
Everyone was amassed after struggling to remove the first bullet the barrel was fine and hasn't jammed since.
He was using new Magtech ammo. Not sure if the first round went bang properly as it was the guys first time at the range but he thought it had.
