Ever have a dud centerfire factory ammo round

I was just wondering how many of you have had factory center fire ammo go POOF. I have shot lord knows how many rounds of reloads and factory ammo and can't recall ever having a dud reload of my own making in the last 20 years. I seat the primers by hand, and check every round for powder. I realize a bad primer can happen, and my lucky reload streak will end.

I have had a friends 357 mag reloads, he got from another friend not fire, the primer went off but no big bang, as he was getting ready to squeeze the trigger again on his model 28 I yelled hold your fire. We unloaded the gun and sure enough he had a bullet stuck in his barrel. I assume there was no powder in the case. The look on his face was priceless.

I am very careful not to touch primers by hand, as I have read this can contaminate a primer. I also check and clean primer pockets as media can and will get stuck in the flash hole as well as the pocket.

I have had factory ammo on 3 occasions in the last 10 years that didn't go boom, with a solid primer hits. Two were early Remington Golden Saber 45acp fired in a P220, was I surprised. The other I believe ( not 100% sure ) was a Speer Gold dot 40 cal not sure which of my many 40's it was fired in either. I assume it was Gold dot because that's what I was using in my forties back then. I especially remember the golden sabers, because it was going to be carry ammo for myself and my son in our P220's. I pulled the bullets in these and there was powder, so it must have been bad primers.

I had a box of Wolf that multiple rounds were duds. I had used it in a Baby Eagle .45 that I had just bought and thought it was the gun. I then tried it in my Smith 1911 and it did the same thing in that. The guns were definitely making good hits on the primer, but it wasn't firing.

I've definitely had one, and perhaps two, failures to ignite primers over the 3 years that I've been shooting. If I recall correctly, it was WWB, though I still have faith in the overall quality of that brand. I both cases, I cleared the gun and reinserted the round. They fired the second go-round.

35 years ago I had a FTF, shooting Federal 9M/M, the bullet stuck about 1/2 way down the barrel, had to use a brass drift and lead hammer to drive it out.

Recently, I have discovered a total of three (3) damaged .357 rounds from Speer, the cases were dented and would not chamber. Oddly these were in two different boxes. I have no idea if they were from the same lot.

Nope, never have. I did however have a batch of 45ACP (factory reloads, cannot remember the brand.. they called it "police ammo" lol which had bulged casing and wouldn't chamber properly in a Kimber or a Glock.

Had a squib in my CZ P-01 firing Remington UMC 9mm ammo.

Round "fired" and ejected spent case as normal, but wouldn't chamber another round. Picked up spent case and noticed an 1/8" x 1/4" notch cut in spent brass. Figured that piece of brass had wedged in there causing the next round to not chamber.

Went over to the next stall, and disassembled the gun, and looked through the barrel. Or attempted to anyway.

Also had a friend have a missing primer in a box of Remington UMC .357 mag ammo.

Oh yeah. The more you shoot, and usually the cheaper you shoot, the more duds you run into. Mostly WWII surplus ammo bought years ago and stored incorrectly, but occasionally you get a modern factory load that won't fire.

For Peetzakilla, you must not have ever shot Remington Golden Bullet bulk .22LR ammo. That crap is at about 4% failure rate for me...

I've NEVER had a center fire primer not work. I've had a few ftf's from light hammer strikes when the spring had been mal-adjusted, but the primer always popped with another strike.

This is after over forty years of shooting factory and reloaded ammo; a lot.

Sadly, the same doesn't apply to rim fire. jd

In modern, factory manufactured centerfire ammo, I think I've had maybe one misfire in 35 years. Don't remember the brand off hand, but it was not premium self-defense or hunting ammo either.

I did open a box of Winchester Silvertips - .41 Mag 175gr - and found one cartridge with two projectiles in it. The bulged case was obvious and taught me to inspect my ammo purchases carefully. Winchester was nice about it. Sent a coupon for a $10 discount on more ammo as their apology.

Most of the misfires I've had were with reloaded ammo. I've seen others with squib loads and a friend damaged his Kahr with a 9mm reload with a bulged case. You learn that bad things happen once in a while.

Re: Reloading & primers. While finger oils can contaminate primers several reloaders I know wear latex gloves while reloading. If oil or case lube gets on the gloves, a new pair solves the problem. They also reduce lead contamination of the skin. If you don't have latex gloves (or are allergic to them), cut a piece of sponge and fit it into a closeable plastic box. Pour 1/4 oz of isopropyl alcohol on the sponge and use it to 'degrease' your fingers periodically while handling reloads. Keep it at least 3 ft from the reloading area and/or covered. Rehydrate your fingers with a glycerine based hand sanitizer or soaking 2 minutes in warm water.

I had a 6mm Remington round fresh out of the box with incomplete metal formation at the neck (there were holes in the neck and shoulder on one side). I did not shoot this round, but figure it would have gone boom.

I had a .410 shell not go off and two out of my k31, but it was very sandy because of the high winds in the Arizona desert, so i think that was why. Ive never had an issue when its clean. I think ti was the gun and not the ammo because i put them back in the gun and they fired.

A long time ago I had to unchamber a 7.62x39 from my SKS and had the bullet come apart. The bullet wasn't stuck in the barrel, and I was able to see it just sitting there along with some powder. The other bullets were loose. I have also had a few rounds of .25 ACP where the case mouth folded over and it wouldn't chamber.

i've had 2-3 wolf .223 primers pop but no boom. bent the primers in half, LOTS of smoke. but ive shot hundreds of rounds of wolf, so no biggie

I had 2500 9mm rounds from pakistan made in 1972 sent back to the retailer cause they were all duds.

I had one Federal .38spl 130g FMJ just the primer went off, right away a guy next to came over and said what the heck was that. I made sure the snubby I was shooting didn't have the bullet stuck.

I had about 5 box's of Fiocchi's 9mm that had about one dud, but that helped me practice clearing the chamber.
