Ever allow yourself to be "duped" by internet gun forums?

What I am asking is if you have ever allowed yourself to be scared off from trying out a firearm you would otherwise be attracted to simply because of negative posts on the internet that turned out to be pure baloney?

Such as, have you never tried a Glock because of the "kaboom" threads? Have you never tried a Beretta M9 because of the barrel cracking threads? Have you never tried a S&W revolver because of the IL failure threads? Etc.

I have recently been guilty of this very thing. I have been a fan of Kahr's all steel pistols for quite some time but I have stayed away from the polymer ones because of stories I saw on the internet. These are guns I would normally be drawn to because of the small profile, stainless slides, and attractive styling.

When I started really looking at the posts and putting the pieces together it became very clear that this was a case of a few old stories of isolated incidents with older models being told, retold, and retold again. Usually the recent stories were being retold by people that have never even held a Kahr but were still repeating the information as if it was first hand gospel. Even the reports of extended break in periods do not hold up under scrutiny.

After finally doing the math and deciding to try the gun out for myself, I found that it is a fantastic gun. The quality is very good and performance has been flawless out of the box. Which is much more in line with what I see on the forums from actual confirmed owners. Unfortunately, I wasted a lot of money on guns that I would not have bought had I already owned the Kahr version first. :)

Scared off, nah
But several times I've found out that the reasonable critics weren't so far off the mark

Personally I've found the characteristics of the "pure baloney" posts to be pretty easy to spot.

No, not me, I know too much :)

But I have made the Bersawoobie folks circle the wagons with my espousal of truth :)

WA, I have done the same thing with them Roebar and EMP folks. I do feel bad at times, as they have so much in them. orchidhunter

It's really easy to recognize trolls who are sometimes just teens having fun in these threads.
Other trolls make comments about guns that they have never seen or even held and they still think they are experts. Sometimes these trolls are one and the same, but it doesn't matter. A troll is a troll.

So no, I look at the composite of what's said, and who says what.
Somewhere in the middle, you get people who have real experience who offer helpful advice, and it's not that hard to tell the difference between them and the trolls (coughid orchcough).

Edit: Check out orchidhunter's profile in the "Friends" box. :)

Nope, if I did I would never have bought 2 RIAs. The same guys who were saying they were trash...later posted about having to send back their Les Baer customs back to be "fixed" LOL:rolleyes:

I had no idea my little 5 shot Taurus .44 was such a POS till I read it here.
I am a little nervous about the bbl on the Rem R-25 I have ordered, but I am also concerned about the future availability.I can always fix it with a Krieger.
Haven't fired a lot of Kimbers, but the few older ones I have been around are excellent.
I guess info here is good for caution, having my eyes open.Still,I'm not afraid to learn the hard way,and I do have my own eyes.

Good for you,on your Kahr.

I have bought pistols that people have raved about in the forums, then put them through a range test only to find out that the forum "opinions" didn't mean much. The forums to me are mostly for amusement. They no longer sway my purchase intent.:)

Ken,

So your the one responsible for the recent uptick in D-baggery around here?

I should have known!

:D

Back to PBP question,

Not so much brands so much as models and calibers.

If I had, I would've never got my P22. Which BTW has over 1300 rounds thru it. No FTFs' & No FTEs' :)

As a retired person who reads the Internet a lot I have learned that there is a lot of good information to be had but one needs to learn how to decipher it.

The information tends to "distribute" itself (not unlike a normal distribution) and it is this distribution that begins to develop real, usable information. At one end of the "distribution" are the "haters" (everything bad) who at the other end are the "lovers" (everything is great) and in between are those who help to develop the real situation/information surrounding a particular firearm.

Takes some time to learn how to "winnow" the useful from the not so useful but once you learn that - the net is a veritable gold mine of good gun info.

For me that would be Kel Tecs. I hear good things, then I hear terrible things. So I think I still gotta pass. I admit though that they are light weight and cheap but the reliabilty issues I hear about keep me away.

WildAlaska,

You seem a little grumpy lately. You ok? :)

I'm just one of them great gray masses of hardworking folks without medical insurance and a wife who spent 6 days in the hospital.

Love to watch the happy folks on the government dole getting their free care:rolleyes: I get to pay for them and for me

Actually, after having read several threads about the lock on S&W revolvers, I've decided they're not for me. I hardly feel I've been "duped" though.

I never bought a Yugo, either, or a Ford Pinto. The press about them also helped me to decide that.
