Does The .44 Magnum Get People Mad ???

Most times the boomers never bother me. If I don't feel like dealing with it I just leave. Not a problem!

I went to the range with my super blackhawk .44mag tonight. I was firing my .22 rifles for awhile and I noticed everyone else was shootin pistols, so I pulled mine out. Bear in mind i've got 21gr of 2400 powder in these rounds and 300gr fmj's. Not a small load by any means. After the first shot I heard the guy 2 stalls down say "Holy Sh*t." I smiled and kept shooting. I dont think it bothered anyone though, just surprised them.

At the city range here in ABQ, I was there one time when a guy came in with a Barrett bolt action... The range officer moved him to the end of the range away from everyone else after his first shot...

You would not believe the dust that muzzle break kicks up in front of that gun!

I personally don't mind thunderboomers because I am usually the one doing the booming... :D

It's always good to use friendly range etiquette when shooting. For example, one day, another shooter and I were both shooting our big-bores side-by-side. We'd simply take turns shooting. No complaints. No problems. We both understood what was going on. :)

At the indoor range why not tame things down a-bit and shoot 44spls. Save the magnum ammo for outdoor shooting and serious work. Something to think about.

Not as mad as the .45 GAP does.

Oh, you mean at the range--I thought you were talking about the gun forums... ;)

I've had one guy at our local indoor range get sort of rude when I was shooting my 12ga Defender, after 2 rounds he taps me on the shoulder and says real sarcastically " I hope your not staying long are you?" So I answered politely with a smile "Yes I am"....He left before the magazine was empty, our range rents everything from .22 to .500 S&W in addition to class III stuff including full auto BARS so I dont feel too bad about shooting my .44 Ruger :D

Challenge them

We used to take a T/C to the local range. We had .410/.45Colt, .30-30, .30-06 (ouch) and .270 (again, ouch) barrels for the gun. We had the guys out there saying "Oh, that's not a pistol! That's a rifle!" that swore up and down they could shoot their pistols better than we could. We'd simply ask them how well they could shoot their rifles. "Oh, we're the best riflesmen in the world!" Yeah, okay. My uncle would them pull out the cannon (.30-06) and say "Fine, if you're such a great riflesman, then how about a competition. Your rifle against my pistol at 200 yards. Three shot group. Closest to bullseye and tightest group." "You're on! What are the stakes?" "Guns." You'd be surprised how many rifles we'd turn over to the county sheriff after telling him "Well, this might get reported stolen..."

The 44 mag isn't all that bad, even on an indoor range. I don't find it to be worse than the 357 mag, and some of my 357 handloads are certainly sharper while just as loud. The 454 Casull is the one that really bothers people on the range from what I have seen. Especially the ported ones, they are ear splitting loud indoors. NASTY noise levels, but people should expect it and tolerate it.

I have an FAL type in 308 with a muzzle brake, it is incredibly loud. I TRY to get well away from other shooters at the rifle range but sometimes I can't. I have seen guys pack up and leave after I start shooting it on several occasions and while I feel a little bad about that it really doesn't bother me.

Range Noise

Last time I checked, everyone that shoots makes noise, right? I've looked at guys shootin ak's like they were being overrun by some unknown army of darkness, and wondered why waste the ammo, but as this is a free country, and people may do (within the law) as they please, not really my business to criticize. Everyone just needs to calm down, esp at a gun range, as you are guarenteed to find armed individuals there, I wouldnt think it would be the smartest place to go picking fights.

BTW, if a guy was shooting a hand cannon next to me and it was bothering me I would put a few holes in his target until he moved further away.

Aug, that's all well and good if you were there first AND there's another lane/spot available elsewhere - I can see that. If you weren't there first, OR if there's no other lanes, and you shot my target intentionally, I'd tell you to screw yourself, try to get you thrown out, and possibly punch you square in the nose. I don't care if I'm shooting .50 BMG. Just food for thought. :)

Why cant we all just get along? Maybe we should all just be happy the person with the cannon isnt voting against our gun rights?

You Think That's Bad?

I took my Freedom Arms 454 Casull to an indoor range after I first got it. Upon letting go the first round.....the Range Master turned the lights off and came out screaming..."Who the heck is shooting a rifle in here!". The guys next to me were a little shocked but after I let them give it try...the just smiled and went back to shooting! Funny....nobody wanted more than one test shot :)

I try to give some warning before whipping out the 454 and 50 AE. If there's anyone around doing delicate work, like sighting in, or teaching someone to shoot I try to put it off until their done or ask them if it would bother them ahead of time.

Usually they want to know if they can take a shot with it :D

One time at an indoor range my buddy was shooting a 4 inch .44 magnum and I was shooting a 4 inch L frame.
He was shooting a light .44 mag reload and I was shooting some super hotloads that were so violent, they did not want to come out of the cylinder when the gun was empty!
Everybody stopped and stepped back to see what in hell i was shooting, because of the muzzle blast and vapor waves and shock..... which was sort of embarrassing. I guess it depends on the load. A .44 special load is milder than a .45 acp after all.
