It depends on the gun.

40 9mm and 45 all get factory loads.

44 mag, 357 mag, 12 ga and the 243 varmint machine usually get reloads

I work at an ammo company:
  1. factory seconds are sold to employees cheap as one of our benefits (as in it costs more to handload the same stuff, in the loadings where the components are even available commercially) and
  2. when you work with it all day, playing with it on your own time loses a lot of its' appeal.
However, I'm kind of stupid or something because I mess with a lot of oddball calibers or need specialty loads we don't make and still end up rolling a surprising amount of my own.

I'm a reloader, 40 S&W, 38 spl, and 357 mag. I'm loading my 40 S&W rounds with Ranier plated bullets for 12 cents/round and my 357 mag is running about 15 cents/round. Compare that to factory Remington 357 mag that $50/50 rounds! 50 bucks! Plus, I enjoy reloading, I can load up or down to suit my taste and I'm pretty sure my home rolled ammo is more accurate.:D

I'm a reloader, I load 38 spl, 357 mag, and 40 S&W. No way am I paying anywhere from $15/box for 40 S&W up to $50/box for 357 mag, which is what the Remington soft points cost. I can load better ammo for 12 cents/round in 40 S&W and 15 cents/round in 357 mag. I also enjoy reloading as a hobby and I can tailor my loads for whatever purpose.

Whoops, double post. sorry.

Same here. I can't remember the last time I shot a factory round. I think it was a box of Federal Premium in 270 Winchester. I had a new rifle and no dies, and was heading to New Mexico on a deer hunt. That was '92 or '93. Other than that, it was probably in the early 80s.

I'm retired, but I'd consider going back to work doing that.

I reload for 12, 20, 28, 410 for shotgun. I have about 35 bags of lead that should last me 'till I can't shoot anymore.

Reload 9mm, 38spl, .357Mag, .45ACP with bought cast bullets. I have enough brass to load 3-4,000 rounds of each when I sit down to load so I don't have to change over from caliber to caliber so often. Use a dillon 650. I could not imagine buying factory ever again, though I use factory for CC..............................ck

Boff, autoloaders usually get cheap factory plinkers of factory HD. revolvers rareluy see a factory load, Light loaded SWC for plinking, heavy loaded SWC for huntin'.

Both

I generally carry factory ammo for defense and roll my own for all other purposes. One can shoot a lot more per dollar if one reloads as well as having the ability to make any ammo at any power level one chooses. You can also make ammo that is of the utmost quality and uniformity for target shooting, unlike factory stuff. Also, I find making ammunition is a fun hobby in and of itself, and makes shooting that much more fun.

I'm astounded that that high percentage reload. I never knew that many people did so. I even worded the question to encourage votes from non-reloaders like me.

I shoot factory ammo. I know friends and family who reload. I feel like I don't have the time and I don't really go through enough ammo to make it worth it. I don't really have the space for a dedicated area either.

On the other hand, if I reloaded I would have a reason to go through more ammo for less cost...I will give it a try someday.

I reload. If I need Brass, I will buy factory ammo to get some new brass.
If I get a new gun in a caliber I haven't laoded for, I will buy factory ammo for a while and save brass. Any gun I intend to shoot over 100 rounds a year in I will most likely buy dies for it pretty soon.

I cast handgun bullets. Here is where a BIG savings comes in. I can load 44spl for about 5.5 cents a shot. That is actually about one tenth of the cost of factory ammo.

I have a 380 auto and my wife has a 32 auto that I haven't reloaded for yet. So for those and the 22s we buy factory.

I guess that's a longwinded way to say, "Some of each."?
